Tennis - Sinner accepts three month ban - won't miss Roland Garros (2 Viewers)

Have to think that all of this running around may favor Federer in the Finals, no?

that was the theory 8 years ago when Nadal made his first hard court finals by winning a 5 setter against Verdasco (one of the greatest matches ever) - same scenario, a day less rest

Rafa crushed Fed in the 5th 6-2 at that AO

Rafa in four?
#### nadal...    I really thought Grigor had it after that 4th set

Yeah, I don't see Roger winning this.. he's 35,  he's 0-3 vs. nadal at the AO....  what can he possibly do different at this point to win?

Only shot is if Nadal at 30 isn't like Nadal at 24 and is a bit gassed after that,  but not likely.

I was hoping not to ever see one of these matches again...  I really thought Nadal was done...  after he lost 2 FO's in a row I figured he'd never make another major final

that's what I thought in 09... figured for sure on hard court with what nadal went through that Federer would win...  especially in a match going to the 5th set

If Rafa wins he's within two majors of Fed.  He's not going anywhere.
That's what really bothers me..   After last year the one thing I felt pretty good about is that Rafa was done winning majors after losing a 2nd French Open, and having the wrist issue.. that I felt great about Roger's 17..  I thought the book was closed on the GOAT debate unless Djoker caught up... but then he ran out of gas at the end of 16 and after this AO I felt like again.. 17 is good.

This match is HUGE Sunday...  if Roger wins the gap is 4..  that's big time safe.     If Rafa wins, which is the most likely scenario by a 75/25 margin,  then it's 2.. and if he's back.. then he could win the French also.. and things are starting to look horrible in Roger GOAT world.

I know it's really uncool to do this in sports.. but I'm rooting for him to cramp up or have a wrist issue in this match a la the '14 AO.   I don't care if it puts an asterik on the win..  no one will think about that in 20 years..  they'll only remember it for a year or two...  in the same way that people have mostly forgotten about it from the '14 AO

I'm not even sure I can watch this match Sunday.. it's just going to be a real bummer if it's the same crap different day..   should I put like $500 on Rafa to ease my pain?

Rafa is currently only -120  to Federer even on Bovada...    do these people not usually watch these matches?   Did they not see last last few times they met at the AO?

I could accept Roger losing to any other player on the GD tour.. why does it have to be this basspole again...   damn you Dimitriov!

I'm not sure how much matches 8-10? years ago at the Aussy matter today.

I'm not a Fed/Rafa side taker.. I'd give Fed the edge with the faster surface and the one day of rest for Rafa.  Not by much though.

Looking forward to watching it.

I fell asleep on the couch early in the 4th set...

Woke up this morning fully expecting to watch the remainder on DVR to see that it only recorded midway into the 4th set despite adding an extra 90 minutes.

So weak...  :ptts:

They played in like 9, 12 and 14..  12 and 14 were both semis I believe.    12 was Federer wins first set,  20 minute delay from fireworks, Nadal wins next 3.   14 - Nadal in straights.

Federer was playing better than he is now in both 12 and 14  (12 he returned to #1 and won Wimbledon)  (14 he finaled at Wimbledon and nearly beat Djoker).

Now, you could argue that Nadal might be worse than he was in 12/14...  his results certainly point to that until this tournament...  but with the way he handled Milos and an in-form Dimitriov.. you could say he's probably back to '14 form at worst  (a year he lost to Wawrinka in the AO and won the FO).

I am praying that 5 hour match took a TON out of Nadal, maybe even injured him, and he retires early in the first set or maybe doesn't even show up.

lol, I love @Dentist melting down and not caring how Fed wins.  "I'd be happy if an asteroid fell out of the sky and killed Rafa.  That'd be one more slam for Fed and no more Rafa to worry about."

I hope Rafa mops the floor with his ### and catches him in majors by middle of next year.

Cementing himself as the true greatest of all time.

Where's the Hate button.

Rafa will probably win, then hopefully blows his knee out for good this summer, but Roger will always be goat in most money generated from playing plus endorsements.. and frankly isn't revenue more important than trophies?

So how do I fund a Bovada account?   The only way this works out for me is if I put action on Rafa..

Rafa has a long way to go in my opinion to catch Fed.  While the H2H is important there's a 5 year age difference and that's pretty big in tennis.  Not saying he can't catch him but he can't fall of the map in the next year or two and pass him (even if he matches the GS total)

Yeah, I don't give fed much chance in this one.  Grigor is a better version of him at this point and still lost.  Nadal in 3 or 4.  Hope I'm wrong.

If Nadal wins this it is a tossup for GOAT.  he will have 2 career slams and 15 total.

And completely owns the H2H/

This is kind of how I figured it.

If grigor won,  Federer could win on the experienced in finals thing.

But Grigor played the 1hbh as well as it could be played vs. Nadal and he's younger with more energy and it wasn't quite enough.. dang close

This feels almost exactly like 09...  federer will come in fresher.. nadal will have come off a 5 hour sf, and on a hard court playing fast, you'd think Federer could win.

But when I saw the way Fed played in sets 3/4 vs. Wawrinka, I saw a player that could sustain the high level.

And that's the deal vs. Ralph... Fed almost always grabs a set, sometimes even the first one playing out of his mind... but Nadal grinds him down..   Peak Federer form is higher than peak Nadal form on any surface but clay,  and it's why he can win a 3 set match.. in fact he won their last match played at the Swiss Basel tourney..  but over 5 sets?   It doesn't happen.

Fed is 5-9 in his last 14 finals, and hasn't won the last 3... the last guy has just proved to be too much.. frankly fed shouldn't even be here.. and it's looking like I"m going to regret that he is.

He has a chance.  but he will have to serve out of his mind and return Nadal better than he historically does.  For some reason he never seems to get a good read on nadal's serve and doesn't put much pressure on.  As you noted, over 5 sets Rafa, through shear force of will, grinds fed down on his serve and then the errors followed by breaks set in.

Fed has a chance, but the way Nadal looked in that semi, it is a slim one.

Nadal will pound top spin forehands at Fed's backhand and break him down. like always. I wont bother, but If Fed surprises I'll watch a replay.

What if that was happening and then all of a sudden Fed's coach yelled Now! and Fed started using a two handed backhand and blasted winners past Rafa.  That'd be some epic Rocky 2 style #### right there.

Of course Fed would still find a way to lose.

Roger can win but he has to be really mentally tough and serve extremely well. He needs to be aggressive and come to the net often and not back down on that tactic even when Rafa hits winners off of him. He might have to tank certain games if he is down instead of playing long points from the baseline. He has to tee of on Rafa's second serve, he had to be okay going for shots even if it leads to a high amount of unforced errors.

i won't watch live though, perhaps will peak at my phone once or twice to see how things progress. First set is huge.

There is a chance both players will be out of sorts and not playing well. When is the last time Rafa was in a GS final? Fed hasn't played for months. This is already being billed as the most significant GS final in the history of the game. GOAT is on the line in the minds of many. That is a lot of pressure for two guys in the twilights of their careers.
