Terrell Suggs (1 Viewer)

Anybody have any intelligent thoughts about DL Terrell Suggs of the Baltimore Ravens?

The Ravens seem to switch between the 3-4 and 4-3 ... is he one of those players that is immune to such scheme switching or is there cause of concern.

Is there any way to predict which games certain schemes will be run ... ie against certain types of offenses ... of are these game time decisions that are out of the fantasy coaches control ?

Somebody panicked in our league and dropped him ... so considering in our scoring system he was a top 5 guy ... is he still or is he risky depending on how they use him???

The true multiple front defenses -- BAL and NE -- will run nearly any front at any time, assuming their personnel is fully healthy. PIT, ARI and the NYJ aren't quite as variable. It's difficult to predict what NE will do in any given week and BAL runs so many fronts it probably doesn't matter. And it's often game situation dependent, as you said, and out of your control.

The Ravens have been playing a lot of 3-4 thus far, presumably to mix up their pass rush against Palmer and Clemens. With Trevor Pryce out for awhile, you may see even more 3-4 looks unless they move Jarrett Johnson back to a 4-3 end-like role and bring Antwaan Barnes into the mix.

Suggs' production is safe either way.

He hasn't done much as of yet. I still have him as my starter, but am tempted to bench him for Matt Roth due to his production.

Don't mean to hijack, but you mention Johnson possibly playing at the line of scrimmage. What do you think that does to his value. I picked him up off waivers today because our league is dependent on big plays, especially sacks for LBs. We are so big play dependent that I probably will drop Witherspoon if I win Johnson on waivers.

Shouldn't do too much to hurt his big play stats, as I'd guess they'd still move him around a bit on passing downs when they tend to use more four man fronts and 46 anyway. I'd be more worried about Barnes, should he get more playing time and start to force himself into the rotation.

Good point. As for Suggs, I have watched the Ravens some this year since I live in Maryland and it seems he has been in coverage quite a bit. He has two PDs in two games. I don't have any sense whether he is dropping back more than last year, though. I may also have been drinking.

  :D

Fascinating Fact: Did you know that Suggs was #5 among defensive linemen in 2006 in passes defensed? We get the equivalent of a solo tackle for a pd, and that has helped his stats slightly (I have him in my league) this year. He has two pds this season (which ties him for 2nd among defensive linemen Johnny Jolly of GB has three), to go along with his three solos and four assists.

I take this as a good sign that even though he has yet to put up any of forced fumbles and sacks that we all expect of him, he's still getting in the way of the opposing team's offense. I really think his big games will come!

EDIT: Whoops! MDPapi was apparently posting this very thing while I was still typing!

Great minds think alike, or something like that.

That one caught me off guard, too. I don't know the context of those PDs, but Suggs is very aware of where he is when rushing and dropping in coverage. He is one of the best in the game at sensing the release and getting his hand(s) into the passing lane. He's just a very good all-around player. Perfect fit for a multiple front defense.
