Terrell Suggs (1 Viewer)

I am going through my roster and doing my usual off season maintenance. CBS lists Suggs as a LB, and since he wasn't starting for me at that position I was looking to cut him. While I was browsing through the IDP rankings at DynastyGuys, I saw that he was listed very high under the DL category. I hadn't seen him listed as a DL anywhere else so I went on the Raven's website for their depth chart along with the FootballGuys depth chart, and both of those sites list him as a LB also.

On his player page on CBS, there are a couple of comments about how he should be listed as a DL. One of the comments says he plays DE when the team is in the 4-6 defense and that Baltimore's 3-4 is not as conventional as other 3-4's.

I had the same problem with Tamba Hali is past seasons and I am able to use him as a DL even though he is listed as a LB on CBS. Although, I'm starting to think hes getting into more of a LB role.

Are these players DL eligible? I don't want to ask to get the position changed until I am sure about this.

Suggs is generally considered a DE in most of the leagues I play in, including all the MFL (myfootballleague) sites...

Generally, that site takes the positions listed in the depth charts at rotoworld.com as gospel.

Hali, on the other hand, is solely a Linebacker on there.

I'm in one IDP league on MFL and he is a LB only which seems to conflict with the above poster.

All my MFL leagues have him at DE.

I got sunk a couple of years ago when I needed DE help in a couple of leagues and the guys I drafted as DE got redesignated as OLB during training camp. Horrible results for me.

Lesson learned. I dont draft tweeners now and when the mumbles start about shifting to a 3-4 I pull the trigger on a trade (see Schobel, A, BUF who I will let go right now for a half eaten candy bar)

Curious about the relisting as talked about. Does your Commish own him? Was he lobbyed to ride over this?

Quick note to Football guys and staff.....

Since Suggs varies from site to site with his position listing, would it be too much to ask to have Suggs listed under both DL and LB for dynasty rankings? I only ask because I have a hard time gauging Suggs value as a LB.

Unfortunately, the way our database is set up and tied to stats, rankings, projections, etc, it's impossible to have players listed in two different positions. Given Suggs' likely statistical projection -- in the 40-55 solo, 8-11 sack range -- he'd be a step below the DeMarcus Ware/James Harrison tier of OLB and probably in line with guys like Lamarr Woodley and Anthony Spencer. Solid low level LB1 in big play leagues, LB3/4 with upside in standard leagues. I'd still consider him a top ten player in dynasty leagues at DL, I'd be a little more leery of him as a LB due to age, durability concerns and the usual ups and downs of rush OLBs.

Last spring, I went through a portion of Suggs' 2008 player participation logs and showed that Suggs played a slim majority of Baltimore's base defensive snaps at defensive end. Adding in his nickel snaps, Suggs lined up at DE on about 64% of his snaps. Baltimore played more 4-3 last season and a quick look at some of the 2009 logs suggests that Suggs lined up at DE at least 64% of the time (and probably higher) last year. There are plenty of tweeners out there, but Suggs has been the most controversial. I think he's listed correctly at DE, but it's close enough that some sites (including some "official" NFL sites) are justified in calling him a LB. We sync our database to Rotoworld and MFL unless we feel there's a clear error. It leaves us open to situations like that of Suggs.

Didn't he get tagged this year or last IIRC? What did the Ravens have to pay him as, LB or DE?

Huh...if I'm reading this right, even they couldn't decide...and split the difference on the tag value for LB vs DEhttp://www.realfootball365.com/articles/ravens/11226

The Ravens and DE/OLB Terrell Suggs agreed to the dollar figure of the one-year franchise tag he was given this offseason, ending a feud over which position Suggs really played.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Suggs will get "close to $8.5 million," as a hybrid DE/OLB. The Ravens gave Suggs the franchise tag as an OLB, meaning his one-year salary would be $8.065 million -- the average of the top five OLBs in the game. Suggs countered that, because he played more than half his snaps as a defensive end, his salary should be $8.879 million, the average of the top five DEs in the NFL.

He was tagged as a linebacker (which carried a smaller salary) and filed a grievance. The team and league agreed to a new DE-LB category and paid him a tender that averaged the two salaries. Suggs was able to argue successfully that he played more snaps at DE than LB (in 2007).ETA:

MFL Leagues by default list him as a DE. Depending on how your rulebook decides how the positions are designated, you may have a beef with your commish for altering Suggs' position eligibility from what the site had.
