New article came out today that ISIS is on the verge of nuclear weapons.  I do some work in the terrorism field and I've been hearing alarms going off for about a year now on this.  It's one of the reasons I think it's absolutely necessary that we secure our borders.  This reminds me of the unheeded warnings that went out in the late 90's about al Quaeda.  Time to wake up America.  This is the biggest threat facing the US right now, and it very much is an existential one.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna need something a little better than a newspaper article claims an expert said something but then hyperlinks to their own article instead.  Also preferably something from a better source than a newspaper whose second most popular article today is about how rosemary can help you live to 100.

Here's the report.  And here's a much more reasonable statement about it from a slightly less fearmongering news source:

In a recent report for Project on Managing the Atom from Harvard’s Belfer Center, Matthew Bunn explains how the threat of nuclear terrorism is rising as extremist groups continue to evolve.

While there has not been any concrete indication that ISIS is pursuing nuclear materials, the researcher says that the actions and rhetoric of the group suggest its need for such powerful weapons.
There is nothing remotely close to "news that ISIS is on the verge of nuclear weapons."

:lmao:

To be fair, he does do some work in the terrorism field.  Wonder if securing our borders would have prevented the Dylan Roof act of terrorism.

Working as a mall cop does not qualify as "work in the terrorism field".

I have actually worked with the group that helped draft the formal definitions of what constitutes a certfied act of terrorism within the current TRIA legislation.  The Roof shooting doesn't meet that definition as the extent of damage wasn't large enough.  But it may be considered an act of terrorism under other definitions, particularly from the FBI's standpoint.  You'd have to argue that Roof's action was meant to intimidate  or coerce the civilian population or the government.

I can tell you that the people I deal with on this issue, including some of the modeling firms that work for the Government, have become much more concerned about NBCR in the past year.  We have intercepted ISIS manuals in the last year with detailed planning about ways to smuggle a nuke into the US through the Southern border.  In the Belgium attacks last week they uncovered detailed surveillance going on by the terrorist's of nuclear scientists.  There are stories coming out weekly on this that should be of concern to everyone.

But glad to see the usual band of suspects in here are poo-pooing the threat and turning a blind eye to it.

Pooh-poohing.

I'm not pooh-poohing the threat. Unlike most people, me and my family are definitely in the crosshairs of such a threat. That #### keeps me up at night.

I'm pooh-poohing fearmongering. You shouldn't post that "ISIS is on the verge of nuclear weapons" when there is no evidence of anything like that. That's not a good thing to do.

They all know far more than you Higgs, face it, you are just a dumb dumb Trumpkin.

How come he's not starting threads about North Korea launching nukes on us?  They have them AND they said they were going to do it...where's that thread?

And another question:  If Dylan Roof wasn't big enough to be considered terrorism when he killed 9, do we consider the San Bernardino shootings to be terrorism because the number was 14?

There very much is evidence.  You just don't care to look for it or acknowledge it.  Hence, pooh-poohing as my boy GM would say.

Obama seems concerned.  Does that help? http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/obama-world-leaders-discuss-keeping-nuclear-weapons-isis-n548636

I understand that Collin Powell will be addressing the UN Security council with detailed evidence of this very soon.

I get were you are going.  The number is 11, it is not a secret.  The secret is that not all who you may count as a person count under the formula for reaching the total.  Much like our Constitution had fractional representation of some persons or races for some purposes, so to does the secret formula for reaching the 11 needed here.

I understand the formula is as convoluted as the one the NFL uses for compensation for loss of restricted free agents.

I remember sitting at a bar in Chicago, just before kickoff of the Packes-Bears game on a Monday night, when George Bush came on the tv and told us all that Saddam Hussein was very interested in nuclear weapons.

Fool me once, shame on ....... shame on you,.....fool me.......you can't get fooled again.

Yes, the world is a very scary, hideously dangerous place.  Today, yesterday and tomorrow.  I'm scared of ISIS as much as I am having a stroke or heart attack.  I'm fearful of North Korea sending a nuke to Oregon like I am wrecking my car and dying.  I'm scared my kids might get shot at school like I worry that my wife get shot at a supermarket.  There are dangers all around us; from terrorists, non-terrorists, disease, famine, bad drivers, poor weather, snakes....

But jesus ####### christ, man.  Why live in fear like this?  Hell, go outside and play.  Seize the damn day.  I get it, you guys want to spend what's left of your time in fear.  Not me.  Learn to laugh, learn to enjoy what's left of your life.  You want to stress and spread fear about bad guys doing bad things, well...be my guest.  Keep starting fear based threads about what atrocities lie ahead of us.  If you want, you can open history books and read about all the atrocities that are behind us.  There were some really bad ones just like there will be some really bad ones ahead.

But me?  I'm going to take a page out of Van Hagar and remember that all that matters is right here, right now.  75 degrees outside, I'm going to go home early, put on some work clothes, crack open a cold one and spread some topsoil.  Then I'm going to play with my kids.  And then I'm going to eat dinner with my family.  With any luck, I'll watch a show on TV with my wife, maybe read a little before bed and hope the world is still spinning when I wake up.  What I won't do is spend another second worrying about how bad guys are going to do bad things and scare everybody around me.

Go have a gas at whatever you do.  Peace.

It's an all or nothing proposition isn't it. Fearing something means your life stops and that it totally consumes you.  Thanks for the wake-up call.
