Even 15 yards is too stiff for the invalid challenge. 5 yards for delay of game.
I couldn't agree more, your rational about showing up the refs is on point. I also think we should start assessing penalties when a coach calls a time out when when the refs have already stopped the clock for an injury, end of quarter or the other team has already called a time out. Just so these uppity coaches to show up the refs. As a matter of fact, if you try to call timeout when the clock has expired to change ends of field not only should you not get the automatic clock stop they should also speed up time to punish you for over lapping the refs efforts.XPlays are still reviewed. It's just that the team that made the challenge can't benefit from the review. (The other team still can.)Here's an idea.
If you're a coach and one of your players scores an important TD, but you're worried it might be overturned on review? Throw the challenge flag. A 15 yard penalty in exchange for making it a non-reviewable play is a great trade.
I like the rule. Don't throw the flag. Throwing the flag on a play that was going to be reviewed anyway does nothing but show up the refs. So don't throw it.
Exactly. Threw the flag in a macho display. Like to think your coach is a bit more cerebral than that.Schwartz knew the rule. (He immediately took the blame, pointing to himself and saying "my fault, that's on me" several times.)He just thew the flag to "be a man" and let the refs know that he's not going to stand for their error, and he didn't think about the rule in the heat of the moment.Jim Schwartz too for not knowing the rule.WOW...REFs should be fired over this one.
Yea killin me for starting them. They have fallen off a cliff. What happened to the Texans Defense?
He was walking up and down the sideline right afterwards tapping his chest and saying "my fault" quite a bit. He knew what had happened and that he'd screwed up.Hey, Schwartz, don't sit there shaking your head like you can't believe how these refs are screwing you. You Effed up.It's a bad rule. But there was no reason why he should have thrown that flag. Was he really screaming that? Lol too funny.HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!Couldn't happen to a better guy! This is the same ######## who was shouting "Know the rules!" across the field at Harbaugh last year.Thats idiotic. What benefit to you gain from a review that was going to be reviewed anyway? That being said, how do you not know that every TD will be reviewed automatically? AND if you're the guy in charge of the flag how do you not know that throwing it illegally will cost you a review? Idiot.![]()

Should have thrown his clipboard, Gatorade cooler or 3rd-string QB in hindsight.Schwartz knew the rule.
Not the same without Cushing. They had that one good week vs Baltimore without him but otherwise they have been below average since he has been out. What happened to the Texans Defense?
True, but who cares? Do we want the game decided on the field, or do we want to make sure the coaches dont get away with outbursts? Throw him out of the game if you want, but don't change the results on the field that dramatically.Exactly. Threw the flag in a macho display. They look awful on some of these plays....on that last play there was a hole so big you could drive a truck through it.Yea killin me for starting them. They have fallen off a cliff. What happened to the Texans Defense?
I guess its ok for them to hit a sliding Stafford in the head.![]()
Yeah, awesome. I played Leshore because Bell basically didn't play last week; thought Leshore would be safe. Back to the 'closer' role....sigh x 2No Leshore TD sigh.....
By that logic why not just make it a forfeit. That would be a great incentive not to throw the flag. Is this issue REALLY so important that we are willing to essentially award points over it? A coach could run off the sideline and tackle a player headed for the endzone and the penalty wouldn't be 7 free points. The more I think about it, the more I like the rule.We don't want coaches throwing flags every time they want a TD or turnover reviewed. They'll just throw the flag to slow things down so they can yell at the refs and hope the extra time convinces the replay booth to challenge the call.
Yes it would.A coach could run off the sideline and tackle a player headed for the endzone and the penalty wouldn't be 7 free points.
I think he knew it was a penalty when he pointed to himself. I am not sure if he knew he made the play in reviewable. First te I have seen the rule applied.Schwartz knew the rule.
When Foster has 11 carries and there is 12 minutes left, I'd say the play calling is pretty bad...especially since the Texans have 10 days off after this game. How many Foster owners are in here crying about his lack of carries? The guy can't touch the ball 30 times EVERY SINGLE GAME or he'll look like Michael Turner when the postseason rolls around. He has 60 yards and a TD starting the 4th, calm down.
That was my take also when it happened.I think he knew it was a penalty when he pointed to himself. I am not sure if he knew he made the play in reviewable. I agree with you as well. The game shouldn't be decided like that. But the rule is the rule. Everyone and their mother knows all TDs are reviewable, the coach should be over on the sideline saying, 'take it easy everyone, this one goes to the booth....'Yes, awful rule. And I hope they change it. But these are two different things. The rule is indefensible. And Schwartz' actions are indefensible. 'Heat of the moment'? Keep your cool. Maybe I am just not a Scwartz guy. His teams look undisciplined. I am a Raiders fan, I know what that looks like.True, but who cares? Do we want the game decided on the field, or do we want to make sure the coaches dont get away with outbursts? I started Leshoure in one league and I am overjoyed that he has done anything at all against the Texans.Yeah, awesome. I played Leshore because Bell basically didn't play last week; thought Leshore would be safe. Back to the 'closer' role....sigh x 2No Leshore TD sigh.....
Yes it would.A coach could run off the sideline and tackle a player headed for the endzone and the penalty wouldn't be 7 free points.
It was during the crowd's collective astonishment that the play was not reviewable because the flag was thrown. That's what he was saying "may fault" about. And he didn't look surprised or upset. He just looked like he knew he messed up.I think he knew it was a penalty when he pointed to himself. I am not sure if he knew he made the play in reviewable. How so?Yes it would.A coach could run off the sideline and tackle a player headed for the endzone and the penalty wouldn't be 7 free points.

Overall, I agree. I'd get rid of challenges altogether.Face facts...the rule is BS. The object should ALWAYS be to get the call right.
Right, but the team was going to get a touchdown anyway. The only 'penalty' would be the personal foul and ejection. In the case we're looking at it gave 7 points to a team that would never have gotten those points.Yes it would.A coach could run off the sideline and tackle a player headed for the endzone and the penalty wouldn't be 7 free points.http://quirkyresearch.blogspot.ca/2009/12/blogging-nfl-rule-book-palpably-unfair.html
I literally just came here to post I just voted for Forsett at cbssports I can't wait for that interview. "So here's you Iron shaped like a turkey for getting credit for that ####, how do you feel?"I'd love it if J Force got the Iron Man Trophy!!!

Thanks for posting the rule Maurile -- glad it's not quite as bad as it seems.Schwartz told his coaches and players 'that's on me' several times after he realized what he'd done.It was during the crowd's collective astonishment that the play was not reviewable because the flag was thrown.
