Texans-Moulds agree to deal (1 Viewer)

Just because the Bills know that HOU wants him doesn't immediately translate to power. The Bills will be forced to release Moulds and therefore have ZERO power in all of this. Anything they can get would be gravy. Unless another suitor shows up wanting Mr. Mould's service and creates a bidding war, I would be surprised to see Kubiak and Co. offer more than a 6th.
why would the Bills be "forced" to release him? They can fit him under the cap. The only reason this is happening is b/c they want him to take a cut and he refused. Just because he agreed to a renegotiated contract with the Texans doesn't mean they have to deal him. They could still change their mind and decide they are willing to keep him under his current contract.

Why will the Bills be forced to release Moulds? The Bills have ALL the leverage here. They can fit Moulds under the cap right now. It would be beneficial to the team if he took a paycut but he isn't putting them over the cap. He can run his mouth and sit out all he wants, the Bills own him and can sit on their hands if they want to. If another team wants him, they're going to have to pay to get him.
Do the Bills have enough cap room to sign the rookies (#8 overall requires a million dollar signing bonus), and any free agents that they want? If they deal Moulds, they will have more flexibility to do both rather than be forced out of the offseason game.
yes, they could afford to keep him if they wanted to. they just don't think he's worth $7 million.

Chanel 2 in Houston has bought in to the story. They claim to have some contacts.

I just hope it is for a 5th. The first pick on the second day of the draft is too high for my tastes. I'd rather try to trade it for someone's 3 next year if we are not going to use it. Moulds or not.

Moulds Done Deal to Texans

Posted: March 29, 2006

Hi folks. Local 2 sports has been in contact with people close to the Eric Moulds negotiations with the Eagles. Late Wednesday afternoon The "WIP" sports radio station in Philly is reporting that Moulds and his agent have come to terms with the Texans on a contract extension. Now both the Texans and Bills are working out details on a trade that will get him to Houston.

More tonight on KPRC Local 2 Sports at 10

As you know, when Casserly is going after the asset he tends to overpay. While I would not agree with it, would not be shocked to see a darn 3rd rounder go over to the Bills.

I agree he sometimes tends to overpay. But I don't think even Casserly would give up a 3rd since the Texan's two 3rds are 3.1 and 3.2. The 4.1 should be more than enough to get Moulds, given his age and his situation with the Bills.I'll take Moulds for the 4.1 (though I'd rather see a later pick back as well). Though my wish list would be to get Walker instead and let the Iggles have Moulds.

I think Moulds is definatly at the end of a nice career. The one think i think Houston needs is veteran leadership. I was actually hoping that Issac Bruce would be available. Moulds for $7mil is too much but he may be able to bring some things to the table to help out AJ and that offense.

Although what has Moulds done for Buffalo the past 5-6 years?

I dunno, its an okay signing IMO but i really dont think Houston should give the Bills a 3rd or 4th. Id rather see them take a chance on him being released first. If he stays with the Bills no big loss to Houston.

I do think Veteran Offensive players would be a good addition to Houston but I just dont see anyone really left out there. Anyone got a list of FA's left at the WR position?

This is not a good move by the Texans.

When was the last time a WR changed teams and had an impact for his new team? When was the last time a WR changed teams and repeated or bettered his numbers from the previous season with his old team?
Just off the top of my head,Santana Moss (from Jets to Skins)

Kennan McKardell (from Jags to Bucs)

Joe Horn (from KC to N.O.)

Jerry Rice (from 49er's to Raiders)

Eddie Kennison (from Donkeys to KC)

Not as rare as most think, but point taken.
You could probably add Plaxico Burress to the list too.

I can't believe Texans fans are complaining about giving up a 4th round pick for Moulds.
Mostly has to do with a distrust of Casserly. he did trade a 2nd and 3rd for Phillip Buchanon just last year.

Could be we aren't as simple as our team's on-field play is. I think that we would have to give him a contract larger than his worth. This may make sense if he was a long time Texan, but his glory days are in Buffalo. Is Eric Moulds worth a 4th rounder? Sure he is, but combine that with a high salary and a 2 year window of play, no way do I give up a first day pick for him. This year the first pick in the 4th round of a deep draft is as good as a first day pick in most any other year to me. This is the easiest pick to trade after some GM sits up all night re-shuffling his draft board, so if I use it in a trade it will be for a younger prospect.

I thought they said they renegotiated his deal.

Texans, Eagles closing in on Moulds?

<Mar. 30> According to ESPN.com's John Clayton, Moulds could be traded as early as Thursday. The Texans and Eagles have emerged as the frontrunners. Both teams want a quick resolution. Bills general manager Marv Levy wants Moulds to take a pay cut and stay, but is willing to part ways with him in a trade.

Moulds will have to restructure his contract for his new team, which doesn't appear to be a problem. He will probably make about $8 million over the first two years of a new deal, similar to what Keyshawn Johnson received from the Carolina Panthers.

as a Bills fan who has watched pretty much every game Moulds has played in the NFL, I wish the Bills would pay him the $7 million to keep him around. He's got plenty more left and will bring way more to the Texans than a lot of the other high priced free agents they've signed in the past. That trade for Buchanon was horrible. If you give up that much for a CB who can't cover...a WR like Moulds should be worth twice as much.

Terrell Owens from the 9ers to the Eagles is the most obvious

I'm sure Casserly will work out a good deal before he leaves
:porked:
I don't understand your pig usage
No reply? I'd expect Casserly to leave shortly after the draft
you go right ahead and get a feel good from your GM with one foot out the door making deals for with your future picks...picks he generally undervalued and traded away in the past.
If he leaves after the draft I'd hardly call it a future pick. Nor would I expect someone to take a key job with the NFL harming a team on his way out. I'm sure the NFL considerred many people before (all but) naming him as Art Shell's replacement

Ok...I will type real slow...Casserly = likely gone. Speculation is he is toast before we take the field in '06.

combine this with his picks trading away tons of mid round picks for Babin and Buchannon.

= cynical Texan fans.

I think this is the keypointHang in there man, looks like things will be better this year

Ok....I posted that as you edited it. Just giving my POV as a Houston fan. *He should be good for at least 50 catches with Carr pulling the trigger.

*add sarcasm according to individual taste

Yes, and Houston is an extremely good fit for Moulds. He will make Andre Johnson a better WR. Moulds will be very motivated and if he comes into camp in good shape he might be the primary WR. Moulds was not puhed by any WR while he was in Buffalo so I think this will be a good thing for him because Andre Johnson has the same kind of physical talent as Moulds. The limiting factor for Houston will be the ability of the quarterback to deilver the ball into tight spaces where Moulds and Johnson can use their size to make the catch.

Espn 790 is reporting the following on its update

Verbals agreement with Moulds 4 year 12million signing bonus 4 or 5 million

-needs to pass physical and sign contract

Bills and Texans agree on trade unclear as to if its a 4th or 5th round selection.

No link...radio report

Texans are paying for his future, not his past.
I have a feeling he'll be more productive over the next few years than any player taken in the 4th round of this year's draft. Texans are getting a steal.
And TO was only worth a 2ndAnd Faulk was only worth a 2nd and 4th

And Edge could've been had for a 2nd

And SA could've been had for a 2nd

NFL GMs overvalue draft picks for some reason and undervalue established stars(except for QBs).
A-#######'-men

:bag: Suddenly I'm feeling somewhat septegenerian in my thinking here...nice list.

I'll still stand by my statement that this is a bad move. Four (Rice, SMoss, Kennison, McCardell) of the five players on that list had very good veteran QBs to help bridge the gap between them quickly. And Horn was an under used diamond in the rough at Kansas City before coming to New Orleans...basically everyone knew this.

I still say it will be close to a year or more before Moulds and Carr develope their chemistry together (unless a Andre Johnson injury forces it sooner). And when you make this trade for an aging veteran WR like Moulds, you need immediate production and results...I just don't see it happening here. This is the kind of move you might make when you are a veteran team with a veteran QB hoping to push yourself over the top...The Houston Texans are neither. Otherwise it very rarely works...

:football:
This is a team with no wr2. It can't be a bad move if they only give up a second day pick since the "starter" right now is Kevin Walters.

Look at what the Texans are gonna pay Moulds, who will be 33 when the 2006 season starts...now factor in that the team is not a contender this upcoming season, and probably won't be a contender for at least 2-3 more years in a best case scenario. Moulds (36) will likely be finished by then. Why is it a good move to pay out a bunch of money to a stopgap WR2 who you are gonna have to replace by the time your team is a contender? It just appears to me Houston's money would be well spent on other positions in developing their roster...
what good does it do to watch some decent football here in Houston? Quite a bit since I love NFL football and hate watching a no talent team. We have the cap room and he can walk away as we start to compete. Until then, hopefully we convert some 3rd downs.

This is a great signing for the Texans. Moulds is a #1 receiver, not a #2. This will really help David Carr to have a consistent target. A veteran receiver is exactly what this team needed.

It would be irresponsible for the Texans to run out Armstong, Mathis or Walter as the number 2 when none of them has ever been a clear number 3. If you think any of these guys can be a number 2, a couple of years down the road they should be ready to take over.

Terrell Owens from the 9ers to the Eagles is the most obvious In It is what it is original post, he acknowledged TO
Joey Galloway from seattle to Dallas then to Tampa Galloway did not improve upon his Seattle numbers when 1st moving to Dallas, nor did he improve upon his Dallas numbers when 1st moving to Tampa

Terry Glenn from NE to Green Bay to Dallas

Glenn did not improve upon his Green Bay numbers when 1st moving to Dallas

Key Johnson from NY to Tampa to Dallas and now probably Car.

Johnson did not improve upon his NY numbers when 1st moving to Tampa

Muhsin Muhhamid from Car to Chicago

Muhammad DEFINITELY did not improve upon his Car numbers when 1st moving to Chicago

Ditto. I'm sure that a lot of people don't realize what it is like to be paying thousands of bucks for tickets for a 2-14 season. McNair looked up at a mostly empty stadium against the Rams (sold out, but people didn't bother to show up) and that was when he decided Capers would be fired. They have a responsibility to the fans to try to get to the Super Bowl, but they also have one to try to field a competitive team and make the games worth watching.

They gave Walter big $ for a reason. I'd like to know what that reason is also. You guys can knock him all ya want, we already did that though. IMO It's time to guess what's burning in Kubiak's mind.

2nd round pick is whomever falls to them and I haven't heard much about D in a while. What defender would you guess for them?

Walter is a special teams ace. Plus his hands are pretty good from the games I've seen him play. He can only get better as well. I can definitely see him being able to take over for Moulds as #2 in the next few years.

No that's not what I am saying Houston should do. If it were me running the show, I would probably target a guy like WR Sinorice Moss (Miami) in round two of the upcoming draft. Develope Andre Johnson, Sinorice Moss and David Carr together over the next few years and see what happens...
So, the Texans would then go into the season with a 4th WR who has proven even less than the three guys i mentioned??? This is horrible draft for WRs, so let's go into it needing to draft a WR who is going to have to play right away? No problem drafting a guy to develop, but forcing a rookie into the line-up will a recipe for the Texans to continue swimming in the mire in the NFL. As Mole and Greg R mentioned the Texans have not put an NFL quality roster on the field.

Kubiak and Casserly are getting things done...Mike Flanagan was a very solid addition to the offensive line and Kubiak's presence alone will improve the play there IMHO. Also, people presume that if the Texans pass on Brick they aren't addressing their line? It's not as though there aren't going to be guys that can compete for starting jobs on that line in the 2nd round and later. Plus, if Kubiak is successful installing his offense, the Texans will be able to target lineman that other teams wouldn't necessarily covet [i.e., smaller but more athletic].
:goodposting:

Houston is reminding me of Cincinnati a few years ago. The Bungles didn't get any respect either. This team is gonna be better and continue to get better. People talk as though they have done nothing in terms of their OL, Flanningan is no slouch. and like someone else said, they can get someone other than D'Brick in the draft that can come in and compete. Moulds would be a very nice addition to help this young QB and receiving core.

I was rethinking that before I saw your post, but for different reasons. Sinorice Moss may not be the best fit for what Houston is likely to be running anyway, so scratch that quick thought/response. Houston is likely to be looking for bigger receivers. Here is what Houston could have done, go to Oakland and hit up the Raiders for WR Ron Curry or WR Doug Gabriel. That is something they could have looked into as either would be a good fit for them. And both Curry and Gabriel stand to be around and productive for Houston when they are ready to contend, unlike Moulds. Eric Moulds is nothing special here...Moulds is old and it shows. He was also complaining and whining alot last year about his QB. Receivers tend to do that when they start to break down...And I disagree with your thought that starting a rookie WR is a recipe for disaster...the rookie WR will never produce in his first year theory went out the window years ago. :bye:
Over the last 3 years there have been 25 WRs drafted in the 1st & 2nd rounds of the draft and there are about 5 of them worth a flip. BTW, my comment was specifically about the sorry WRs this particular draft looks to be producing ( of course we don't know either way), not a general rule. Moulds old and aging tail caught 80 balls last year. He is better bet to that again than guessing upon the right rookie get 50.

Eric Moulds 2006 Stats80 Catches

816 Yards

10.1 Avg

4 Touchdowns

Yum-yum give me some

Moulds is done...stick a fork in him. Houston should deal for Curry or Gabriel instead of Moulds...that's my take. :bye:
:lmao: :lmao: The fact that you don't know that 80 catches put Moulds easily in the top 20 in the NFL or that his yardage is probably top 35 speaks for itself.

WGR550.com reports agent Harry Henderson said reports of Buffalo Bills WR Eric Moulds reaching a contract agreement with the Houston Texans are false. WGR also talked with the Bills, and Scott Berchtold, the club's vice president of communications, said reports of a trade between the Bills and Texans are also false.

Moulds stats may have been a little better last year if Lostman would have looked his way once or twice a game.
