For Jets, backup RB plan

RB Article

The Jets are exploring the running-back market, according to sources, an indication the club might not think Curtis Martin will be ready for the opener, if at all.

Martin, on the physically-unable-to-perform list with a lingering knee injury, hasn't been on the practice field since training camp opened. Martin, 33, has said he wants to play this season, but there are growing indications he might not fit in the Jets' plans.

The organization has tremendous respect for Martin's ability to recover from injuries, and the physically-unable-to-perform designation could be its way of giving him one last chance to get healthy. At the same time, the front office is scouring the league, investigating options.

Two veteran backs could end up on the trading block - Chris Brown (Titans) and Thomas Jones (Bears). Brown already has formally requested a trade, but it was denied by Tennessee management. Jones could be expendable because of Chicago's big investment in former No. 1 pick Cedric Benson.

Chances are, the Jets will wait a game or two before doing anything, giving them a chance to evaluate Cedric Houston, Derrick Blaylock and rookie Leon Washington. By then, they also could have a better handle on Martin's condition.

Coach Eric Mangini has refused to put a timetable on Martin, saying the NFL's fourth all-time leading rusher will practice when he's "physically able." If Martin isn't activated by the end of the preseason, the Jets can put him on the regular-season PUP list, requiring him to sit out the first six weeks.

Foolish to spend on a RB now if you ask me...

It's a rebuilding year - Let Houston and Blaylock handel most of the work and draft one next year.....

Unless they can get T Jones for like a 4th rd pick..

I don't care what "year" it is, you do what you can to win as many games as you can. Adding Thomas Jones would be a very big move for the Jets. Adding Chris Brown wouldn't be as impressive, but wouldn't hurt. Who knows how credible these rumors are, but if true, Martin's health has to be worse than the Jets are letting on.

I guess the source was those quoted above (I am in NY and my buddy is a Jets fan).

I agree with Chase that Thomas Jones to the Jets would at least make them interesting to watch again.

Thomas Jones accounted for over 40% of the Bears offense last year. Mike Bennett was just traded for a 4th round pick, for some reason I don't think that is going to play out. The Thomas Jones rumors should just go away. Jones is a good team player, and although he is upset with the rumors around Halas Hall, he will not be traded as he is very valuable to the Bears run oriented offense.

It's true that Bennett went for a fourth, but neither Edge nor Shaun Alexander could fetch a 2nd in the off-season. The value of a draft pick is significantly different in March than it is in August. I'd say a second or a third would be nice for the Jets, but there's no way New York can part with a first.

Especially if that first turns out to be Adrian Peterson...

I agree that it would be hard for the Bears to get a second, but I think all of this talk has gotten out of hand. Why would the Bears want to trade Jones when he is under a cap friendly contract, and they still have no idea what they will get out of Benson. (The Bears might trade Jones in the offseason, although his value will be diminished because if they trade him than he will only have one year left in his contract and it is likely that Benson outperformed him during the 2006 season.) I just don't understand why there is 5 different threads everyday about who Jones is going to be traded to. If they didn't trade him when he was skipping voluntary workouts, I highly doubt that they will trade him now. The Bears have a long history of injuries at the running back position, in fact the last couple years they have had to use their 3rd and 4th running backs on several occasions. I think that Angelo knows that Jones is much more valuable than a mid round draft pick, or a malcontent Wide Receiver, and I also believe that Lovie will let the situation play out and play the player that gives the Bears the best chance to win.One difference in Edge and Alexander case was that they had one year left in their contracts, and both were seeking huge contracts, thus lowering their trade value. Although I agree in this day and age teams can't get fair trade value in players for draft pick swaps. Also New York newspapers are not the most reliable when it comes to trade rumors, as it seems they always think that every player rumored will end up on one of the New York teams no matter the sport.

They wouldn't trade him for Lelie so I don't see why they would trade him at all. They need a WR2 more than anything else. If anything they should trade him for Porter, who's a legit WR2 with WR1 potential.

Getting Thomas Jones would be a great help to the Jets. The question is at what price.

I think if either one of these guys would go there they wouldn't back up anyone.

Raiders have no need for Thomas Jones.how about a 3-team trade?

Jets get: Thomas Jones

Bears get: Jerry Porter

Raiders get: 3rd Rounder

:D
FixedThis makes too much sense so it will NEVER happen. None of the teams are in the same division. It benefits each team without losing a starter. It makes each team better (in case of the Raiders, addition by subtraction of the distraction), etc.....Too bad it won't happen....

3 way with the Falcons and Raiders?Jets get Ducket from FalconsFalcons get Porter from the RaidersRaiders need something from the Jets......?This is probably less likely, but Duckett has been on the block and they do need a WR now.

Thomas Jones will not be traded. Period. Bears have a great cap situation, TJ is paid peanuts compared to his production, he is proven and you can never have enough RBs if you are a run and play defense team that likes to grind games out and protect their young (with history of injuries) franchise QB. The Bears will run the ball between 350 to 450 times (and will need to run in the playoffs too hopefully).....you need 2 RBs to do that.

I have said this before but I will say it again. The NFL is changing. RBBCs is the way to go in the mind of the coaches to be able to win, unless you are lucky to have a stud like Shaun A or Portis or LT2 (and even LT2 has had to miss games due to injuries)

Look at the studly running teams and you see that trend (some sort of RBBC, of course the %s differ per team) clearly just last year. Also, teams that started off using only one RBs (Jets, NE etc), they were forced to use their back ups significantly due to injuries to their "starter":

Dunn/Duckett in Atl

Davis/Foster in Car

Anderson/Bell in Denver

Priest/Larry in KC

Ricky/Ronnie in Miami

Julius Jones/Marion B in Dallas

Caddy/Pittman in Tampa

Westbrook/Ryan M in Philly

SJax/Faulk in St Louis

Thomas J/Benson in Chi (even last year Benson had 300+ yards)

Curtis M/Houston in NY

Jamal Lewis/Chester Taylor in Baltimore

Tiki/Brandon J in NY

Dillon/Pass/Heath Evans

I just have pictured this perfect collision of the 2006 Jets season with the 2007 Draft that brings us Peterson. Then again, I pictured the Knicks getting Lebron that year too.

You bet your .... "You play to win the game"I am a JETS fan, so I know credability is shot...but the could be a better team than many give them a chance to be.No playoffs, but 7-9 8-8 and entertaining would be a big step forward. The RB position, QB position and HC are all question marks. If they could improve talent at RB, that's one worry removed. Here's hoping it's Brown or Jones. More Fantasy clarity at RB!!!
