Texting is a far more masculine activity than talking. Minimum communication to get a point across.
We all know it's the real men who gab on their cellphones.
One thing that inflates text numbers for a lot of people are group texts. I'm on several sports teams, bbq group, a few social circles... all of which use group texts to organize activities/events. If you have 15 people on a group text , it's not hard to rack up 50-75 texts (sent+received) while only technically sending 1 or 2 messages. That said, it's by far the easiest way to organize social groups.
No if you're some married/socially-inept shlub who's life consists of work > bar > Home > Bed > work and you only have 2-3 buddies you generally communicate with... yeah I could see how some of these numbers could seem like a lot of texts.
