The 100 Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movies of All Time: 94. Unbreakable (1 Viewer)

And video stores would've been way better if they put movies in more than one spot! Like put SotL in horror AND thriller sections, so I don't have to guess!

Sort of like how grocery stores put something like croutons near both the salad in produce aisle AND the salad dressing aisles.

Some movies perfectly straddle the line between genres and its unfair if someone cant rank it just because it was in another countdown. I for sure have a couple that appeared in the horror countdown too, but it's not a ton. Definitely not 20-30. I mean, how can you tell someone who does a top 100 thriller ranking that they cant rank SotL because someone had it in the horror thread?

It's also nice to see how a movie ranks in one list vs another. Does a movie work better or worse as sci-fi vs. horror or thriller for example.
Yeah, way too much gatekeeping going on here. Some must have been the same movie ushers that kept me from going between theaters at the multiplex.
Not a big deal either way, mostly it was a suggestion so it wasn't lists of similar titles is all. I'll stfu.

No, it's all good. There may be other countdowns with a lot of overlap, but I just checked and there's single digit percentage overlap between this and the horror countdown. Less if you refuse to count some of the controversial movies from the horror list.

I am not unaware - I often annoyed my staff and managers about this crap.

OK, here we go.

100. Snowpiercer

2013 - 2H 6 - R
Director: Bong Joon Ho
Metascore: 84

In a future where a failed climate change experiment has killed all life except for the survivors who boarded the Snowpiercer (a train that travels around the globe), a new class system emerges.

The movie the TV show would later be based on. and from the same director as Parasite. This one is loaded with great acting, fast pacing, and good action sequences. The premise has some holes, but that's fine. This movie is more of an allegory about classism (similar to Parasite! Hmmm..).

99. Weird Science

1985 - 1h 34 - PG-13
Director: John Hughes
Metascore: 46

Two high-school nerds use a computer program to literally create the perfect woman, who promptly turns their lives upside-down.

I don't normally see this on sci-fi lists, which is odd to me because it definitely is and its one of my favorite Hughes films too. We saw this one in the 80s countdown. Belongs in both.

Trivia: John Hughes only agreed to direct this movie because Universal agreed to let him direct a project he was more passionate about at the same time, The Breakfast Club.

104. Vanilla Sky
2001 - 2h 16 - R
Director: Cameron Crowe
Metascore: 45

A self-indulgent and vain publishing magnate finds his privileged life upended after a vehicular accident with a resentful lover.

I think I'm in the minority here but I loved this movie.
I liked it too, but I get why it's divisive. The plot twist is the sort of thing that causes people to roll their eyes, and the film commits to that plot point with 100% genuine earnestness. If you're the sort of person who can just roll with it while maintaining the suspension of disbelief, it's a great movie that gives you a lot to chew on afterward. But I think a lot of people have a hard time getting past "tech support."

I think it should be video store rules - you have to decide where the movie goes. If T2 was in horror, it shouldn't be ranked here. It's a bit redundant if Young Frankenstein is in the top 100 for horror, sci-fi, and comedy.

It would also open it up for more movies to be featured vs. having a 20-30 that show up in a different ones.
I don't think you can do a list for either Horror or Sci-Fi without Alien/Aliens.

It just adds to the sorrowful lesson David has to learn. He had true love right in his hands but he lost it when he "got in that car". And now he's frozen and she's dead. So there's no getting that love back ever. But with any luck, he can find it again, in another life, when they are both cats (which have 9 lives, of course).

98. The Day the Earth Stood Still

1951 - 1h 32 - G
Director: Robert Wise
Metascore: 83

An alien lands in Washington, D.C. and tells the people of Earth that they must live peacefully or be destroyed as a danger to other planets.

My list definitely skews modern, but I had to include this particular classic. I love how it's deeper than just an alien invasion. It also touches on nuclear arms race and mankind's own struggles not to destroy ourselves.

Trivia: The equations seen on Professor Barnhardt's blackboard are authentic physics that describe a particular form of the famous "three-body problem" in Newtonian gravitation, a problem which has no general closed-form solution. Such many-body problems are central to navigation in interstellar space.

This is much better than the remake, imo. A true classic of sci-fi.

Excellent choice but there's one from the timeframe that I like a little better. Hope it made the cut!

97. The Beastmaster

1982 - 1h 58 - PG
Director: Don Coscarelli
Metascore: 18

A sword-and-sorcery fantasy about a young man's search for revenge. Armed with supernatural powers, the handsome hero and his animal allies wage war against marauding forces.

This was 6 year old Scoresman's favorite movie for a few months. It's campy and cheesy, and just so perfectly weird.

Trivia: According to director Don Coscarelli, the original camera negative for this film is lost. Contrary to standard practices, it was stored in a private house which was sold, and it is not known what happened to the cans which housed the negative. Coscarelli has asked the public for help.

This and Clash of the Titans were on a constant loop in young Yambag's house, thrilled it made the list!

I was 12......Tonya Roberts.....oh yes.

John Amos....classic role. And of course Rip Torn was the ultimate evil baddie in this flick.

Marc Singer kicked all kinds of *** in this awesome campy romp that still holds up today. I love this movie.

I still watch Clash of the Titans at least once a year to this day. Just a wonderful classic in a bygone era of movie making.

I watched Snowpiercer years ago and I was all like "that was dumb, what a waste of 2 hours". Then for some reason i revisited it a couple years ago and ****ing loved it. Not sure that has ever happened to me where I went from watching something and hating to rewatching it and loving it

96. Avatar

2009 - 2h 42 - PG-13
Director: James Cameron
Metascore: 83

A paraplegic Marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.

Yeah Yeah, this is pretty low for such a popular movie, but this one never 100% connected with me. Great worldbuilding, great effects, but it just didn’t capture me that much and I cant put my finger on it. I know I'm not alone, as this is a fairly polarizing movie.

Trivia: At the time of auditioning, Sam Worthington was living in his car.

I tried to watch this one and couldn't get into it - I don't believe I ever finished it, and jimmy cracked corn but I don't care.

Rip Torn was the villain. If it was Rip Taylor, the villain would have been throwing confetti on everyone.

I've never seen this movie. It just got so much hype when it came out. I couldn't see how it could live up to it.

95. Labyrinth

1986 - 1h 41 - PG
Director: Jim Henson
Metascore: 50

Teenage Sarah journeys through a maze to save her baby brother from the Goblin King.

The 80s cheese continues and the nostalgia is strong with this one. This is not the greatest movie, the acting is a bit wooden, but I still like it as a decent coming of age story. And Jennifer Connelly is my longest running crush starting with this movie.

Trivia: The owl in the title sequence is computer generated. The first attempt at a photo-realistic CGI animal character in a feature film.

I just can't with Avatar.
I've rewatched it on TV and it's pretty cringey.

But damn- on a big screen in proper 3d, it was mind blowing... If just for the visuals. Amazing world building and use of the media that I'd never seen before.
Yes and no. The 3D was amazing at the time but that gimmick faded fast. And it just fell victim to, again, the uncanny valley effect I just can't take.

And the script is so derivative. They called it Avatar because "The Last Samurai Dances With Wolves In Ferngully" wouldn't fit on the marquee.

I'm going to spotlight a movie not on my list because I want people's opinions. I've seen The Truman Show listed on more than one top Sci-Fi/Fantasy list. I dont really see it and it seems like a stretch of the genre.... IMDB does not list it as either.
It's not but I can see why one could argue that is.
Took a count by Genre

74 Sci Fi movies
20 Fantasy movies
6 movies that blur the line between the two
oh. For some reason when I clicked on this I thought it was a list of sci-fi movies but I see you are combining the 2.

I also think star wars is a sci-fi movie even if the narrative is more of a fantasy.

I feel like you're contradicting something I didn't say.

And I'm saying the 3D was only cool for a short time - both in the movie and as a concept in movies.

Trying to keep that out of the nostalgic feeling the movie gives me.

Yes and no. Metal storm, the Destruction of Jared Syn was terrible and laughably used 3d.

huh, a bunch of middle aged guys hating on a movie that came out when they were more than likely in their 20's-40's whereas having nothing but love for fantasy movies came out before they reached puberty. Who could have guessed that!
Beastmaster also sucked. Happy now?
