The plan for Train was for it to be a Flexi disc for the NME but things fell apart. The songs inspiration involves his relationship with Viv Albertine3. The Clash “Train in Vain” (from London Calling)

The Clash’s greatest song ever was almost an afterthought; it was added to London Calling at the very last minute, and it doesn’t even show up on the original track listing, just a “bonus” song at the end.
But as composed and sung by Mick Jones, “Train in Vain” is a superb love song filled with angst and the disappointment of a great betrayal.
True, but it's no 'video killed the radio star'.43. “Hey Hey My My (Into the Black” Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Um, yeah, this is way, way too low.
Cheap Sunglasses, the two Little River Band songs and Flirtin' with Disaster are glaring omissions in this top 100, IMO.Now that #1 is obvious, the countdown is essentially complete. These songs were egregious misses IMO and would be in my top 10-15 (in no particular order):
These would have been contenders for my top 100 (in no particular order):
- I'm Gonna Crawl - Led Zeppelin
- Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Queen
- Cool Change - Little River Band
That is 20 songs for the next 100...
- Goodbye Blue Sky - Pink Floyd
- Nobody Home - Pink Floyd
- In the Evening - Led Zeppelin
- Carouselambra - Led Zeppelin
- Dangerous Type - The Cars
- Jane - Jefferson Starship
- Once Upon a Time in the West - Dire Straits - pretty egregious to include zero songs from this album IMO
- Where Do You Think You're Going? - Dire Straits
- Lady Writer - Dire Straits
- The Long Run - Eagles - definitely ahead of Heartache Tonight
- Is She Really Going Out With Him? - Joe Jackson
- Don't Bring Me Down - ELO
- Cheap Sunglasses - ZZ Top
- I Thank You - ZZ Top
- Flirtin' with Disaster - Molly Hatchet
- Head Games - Foreigner - definitely ahead of Dirty White Boy
- Lonesome Loser - Little River Band
Excellent choice for number 1. Definitely a great song and album to get high to, and seeing this song played live is a like religious experience. I only saw it once, when I saw Floyd in '94, but it's something I'll never forget.1. Pink Floyd “Comfortably Numb” (from Off the Wall)

Around ten years after this song was written, I spent every Saturday night during the summer attending the Laserium midnight show at the Griffith Park Observatory auditorium. The Wall was always played (I think Dark Side was on Friday nights.) We’d get very stoned and watch the lights spin and soar all around while this album played. So now whenever I hear this song that’s what I think of.
I've seen it twice from Floyd and once from Gilmour solo.Excellent choice for number 1. Definitely a great song and album to get high to, and seeing this song played live is a like religious experience. I only saw it once, when I saw Floyd in '94, but it's something I'll never forget.![]()
NIce list except that 14 year-old me, and beyond, will neverever like anything from Led Zeppelin's In Through The Out Door. I would rather listen to Rush ...but not Asia; it's not that bad.Now that #1 is obvious, the countdown is essentially complete. Now that the list is complete, I can definitively say you had Oliver's Army 33 spots too low. There are 34 better songs in 1979 than Oliver's Army? Wow. I find that hard to believe, but I will withhold judgment.
Big fan of Mickey Thomas’ vocals and the piano riff ... really dig this track.ETA: And Jane is a big no.
@timschochet, I am curious if you consciously chose to not include all of these songs or if you missed any of them. Now that #1 is obvious, the countdown is essentially complete. These songs were egregious misses IMO and would be in my top 10-15 (in no particular order):

I’ve got some others, but waiting on Bracie’s list first. Now that #1 is obvious, the countdown is essentially complete. These songs were egregious misses IMO and would be in my top 10-15 (in no particular order):
