The 2012 K Thread (1 Viewer)

What do you think about Mason Crosby? He has been good in recent years, but this year has not produced much in fantasy. The question in my mind is: if I cut him now, is he "due"? Or, is GB not taking many FGs for some underlying reason that is likely to continue? Would you cut him for say, Tampa's PK? Do kickers revert to mean somewhat? In other words, if a historically good kicker like Crosby starts slowly, is it LIKELY he will bounce back and OVER perform in the next few weeks? Or, is he more likely to continue to under produce all season?

Kaeding was an enigma. Good kicker until crunch time in the playoffs. Then he was as likely to choke as he was to make a FG.

Having to drop Graham this week because of the bye. Think I'm leaning toward the new Washington kicker. He should get plenty of opportunities.

Novak is another option I'm considering.

Mr. Herman, have you been following this? Tommy Morstead, a steal for the Saints in the 2009 draft is in rarefied air:

Morstead is currently on pace to set NFL records for the best net punting average in a single season (44.88 yards per kick) and in a career (39.9 yards per kick) -- though he needs 64 more punts to officially qualify for the career mark.

And when it comes to gross punting average, Morstead is flirting with one of the oldest records in NFL history, set by Sammy Baugh in 1940. Baugh averaged 51.4 yards per punt that year, and Morstead is averaging 51.24 yards per punt this year. His career gross average of 46.5 yards per punt also ranks second in NFL history.
Are we in a Golden Age of Punting?

SAN FRANCISCO

San Francisco 49ers kicker David Akers seemed like a natural candidate for the "falling" category in our weekly NFC West Stock Watch scheduled for later Tuesday. Akers missed a 41-yard attempt in overtime against St. Louis on Sunday, after all. He has missed six tries this season after missing only 8 of 52 attempts in 2011. Clearly, Akers is struggling, right? Only if you're into the "low-hanging" statistical fruit 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh complains about. Akers, like any kicker, could suddenly lose his touch and spiral out of the league. It happens. There is no evidence it is happening to Akers yet, however. Akers' overall field goal percentage has fallen from 84.6 last season to 71.4 through nine games this season. The decline stems almost entirely from a reduction in chances from short range. Akers averaged 2.1 attempts per game from inside 40 yards last season. If that rate had held firm in 2012 and Akers continued to make nearly all of them, as he has done with the 49ers, his overall percentage for 2012 would be in the low 80s.

This imaginary "slump" from Akers reflects the 49ers' offensive improvement in the red zone. The 49ers are scoring touchdowns on 61.5 percent of red zone possessions. That is up from 40.7 percent last season, when Akers set an NFL record with 44 made field goals, 32 of them from inside 40 yards. Akers has attempted only eight field goals from inside 40 this season. He has made all eight. Akers made 32 of 33 such attempts last season. Those are borderline gimme kicks in the NFL. Attempting lots of them will drive up any kicker's percentage for the season. Removing them from the equation will drive down any kicker's percentage. Of course, missing from 41 yards in overtime was bad Sunday. But it's misleading to say Akers is mired in a horrible slump.
WEEK 10 at KICKOLOGYTied - David Akers & Greg Zuerlein

Sam Koch, Matt Prater & Stephen Gostkowski

So, I feel my team should start looking for a kicker, cause ours sucks. My question is, who is still out there that is any good? Looking over the list of FA kickers, looks pretty bad to me, but maybe one that knows kickers, such as yourself :) can make me feel a little better about replacing our kicker.

Thanks Mike for any insight on this kicker situation.

Sounds like the coaches are sticking with him, unless of course that's just meaningless coachspeak. If they want go veteran, Nate Kaeding, Neil Rackers and Josh Brown are still out there, or even a re-union with Ryan Longwell?

But young kickers are the current fashion, given the recent success of Bailey, Henery, Zuerlein, Walsh, Tucker & Forbath. That creates a potential open door for the numerous other NFL-aspiring kickers, such as Jeff Wolfert (2nd most accurate kicker in NCAA history) and Swayze Waters (who'll be done with the CFL season after this weekend's Grey Cup) to name just two.

P.S. On a side note, here's our weekly post-game post... NFL Week 11: Adam Vinatieri, Justin Medlock, Mason Crosby & Justin Tucker

So which kickers have the best playoff schedule?
It seems like this thread is about kicker news, kicker events, kicker everything, but not about which FF kicker to pick up.Someone else may try this again on this thread.... later:http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=606453&st=0&p=13452032&hl=kicker&fromsearch=1entry13452032

In case you missed yesterday's news, Carolina waived Justin Medlock and signed Graham Gano.

Also, here's the annual look at Thanksgiving Kicks, which is primarily reality but does include a little bit a fantasy at the end.

Mike,

What are your thoughts on the Panthers signing Gano? Personally, I was happy to see Mare go in the offseason because of his failures last year, but I'll admit that I may have had blinders on for Medlock. He didn't really do that much to impress, but my desire to have someone (anyone) instead of Mare probably caused me to expect a little too much from the guy.

He's missed a couple of key kicks that were definitely makeable, so I understand cutting him...but I have to wonder if Gano is the right move. After Mare's failure and now Medlock's, it seems like they wouldn't go down the path of Gano, who has proven to be just as inaccurate as those two guys did.

From my understanding, Kaeding would have just been a rental player because of free agency at the end of the season, but I would have to think that there are some other kickers available to sign a 2-year deal (like Gano) who were better options.

Then again, I don't think Carolina should have ever cut John Kasay.

Gano could very well work out just fine. He's got the right mental approach to kicking. Although on paper last year's 31 of 41 (75.6%) on field goals doesn't impress, keep in mind that five of those misses were blocked... accordingly due to poor line play and not due to Gano's kicking. Had four of those been good, he would've been at a more acceptable 85.4%.

With Mike Nugent being injured during a Wednesday morning walkthrough, the Bengals have signed Josh Brown. The 10-year veteran, who has kicked for Seattle and St. Louis, emerged as the best choice in a tryout that also included Neal Rackers and Billy Cundiff. Nugent suffered a calf injury while attempting an onside kick.
