Havard Rugland isn't just 'Kickalicious'

By Kevin Seifert | ESPN.com

Of all the good things we saw Friday night from the Detroit Lions' revamped special teams, Havard Rugland's performance was probably the least relevant. It's nice that he converted two long field goals in the second half of a 26-17 victory over the New York Jets, but let's face it. Chances are remote that the Lions will choose a place-kicker who is entirely new to the game over veteran David Akers, especially in this win-or-else season.

Still, it will be difficult to forget the scene after Rugland's first field goal, a 49-yard curveball in the third quarter. Rugland celebrated as if the kick had won the Lions the game, prompting his teammates to do the same. Linebacker Stephen Tulloch lifted him on the sideline, and eventually Akers had to remind Rugland that he still needed to kick off.

"It's refreshing to see how much fun he's having," quarterback Matthew Stafford told reporters. "The guy is having a blast here and he's doing a great job. He's kicking the ball great. Obviously, he had two long field goals tonight and got to kick off. Just watching him out there is refreshing for us. … It's an awesome story and the guy is a pretty darn good kicker."

If nothing else, we've learned that "Kickalicious" is not a gimmick. He might have drawn the Lions' attention through a now-viral YouTube video of trick kicks, but Friday night capped a camp performance that has suggested increasing legitimacy each day. In addition to hitting from 49 and 50 yards, Rugland also had two high kickoffs that allowed the Lions' coverage team to stop the Jets' returners short of the 25-yard line.

Again, it's difficult to imagine the Lions tapping Rugland as their kicker this season, assuming Akers remains healthy and kicks the way he did Friday night. (He converted from 47 and 35 yards, and rookie punter Sam Martin appeared more than prepared to handle kickoffs with three touchbacks.) But a few more similar performances could at least put Rugland in the conversation for a future in the game, which is much more than anyone thought possible just a month ago.

Asked about a genuine competition for the place-kicking job, Lions coach Jim Schwartz said the obvious: "Everybody on our team is competing for a spot. We don't have anybody that's out here just buying time."

The really interesting question, which might never arise, is what the Lions would do if Akers is either injured or suddenly ineffective. Has Rugland emerged as an acceptable backup plan, just a few months after he put on a football helmet for the first time? What happens when it stops being just fun and game-deciding pressure arises? That would be the next step in this already-surprising story.

Rotoworld:

Dolphins released K Dan Carpenter.
The move elicited wows and whoas on Twitter, but it was a fait accompli after the Dolphins used the No. 166 pick on Caleb Sturgis. Teams simply don't draft kickers they don't plan to start. Carpenter has a big leg, but missed two games each of the past two seasons after shanking 11 kicks in 2010. Being injury prone is a quick way for a kicker to lose his roster spot. That being said, Carpenter will be one of the first phone calls kicker-needy teams make this season.

Nothing groundbreaking, but here's our brief write-up on this...

First Kicking Competition Concludes: Caleb Sturgis over Dan Carpenter

Reading the tea leaves, who do you expect to come out on top?

On a different topic, any word out of Houston on how well Bullock has looked in camp?

Great situation in Houston, but a rookie kicker coming off a serious groin injury is something to be monitored. Certainly not for the faint of heart...

Thanks Mike
Green Bay homer here. Unless Tavecchio outkicks Crosby by a large margin, I think they keep Crosby. They are very happy with his kickoffs and ability to place the ball on kickoffs and on-side kicks.

Packers won't commit to a kicker yet

By Rob Demovsky | ESPN.com

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- With so much focus on the head-to-head competition between incumbent Mason Crosby and challenger Giorgio Tavecchio, it’s easy to forget one thing: It’s possible neither one will be the Green Bay Packers’ opening-day kicker.

While Crosby has come on strong of late, as was noted in Monday’s practice report, Packers general manager Ted Thompson on Tuesday would not commit to the idea that his kicker is one of those two.

“We’ll see,” Thompson said during his weekly training camp session with reporters. “Never stop looking.”

Some teams already have begun cutting kickers, and the rest with multiple kickers in camp will do so over the next 11 days, so Thompson and his staff will have to decide whether any of the available kickers would be better than either Crosby or Tavecchio.

This is the third time during Thompson’s tenure as general manager that he’s had to pick a kicker. In 2006, he selected Dave Rayner over Billy Cundiff after the first preseason game. In 2007, he waited until the final cuts to release Rayner in favor of Crosby.

“It’s just when you get comfortable with the decision,” Thompson said.

Apparently, Thompson hasn’t reached that point just yet.

Rotoworld:

The Bucs will work out free agent kickers Rian Lindell and David Buehler on Thursday.
The Bucs are turning up the heat on Lawrence Tynes and Derek Dimke. Lindell is the top free agent kicker available, with Dan Carpenter not far behind.

Buccaneers to audition kickers

By Pat Yasinskas | ESPN.com

Excerpt:

TAMPA, Fla. -- Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano touched on a variety of subjects after Tuesday’s practice. Let’s take a run through the highlights:

Kicking it. Schiano said the Bucs will bring in several veteran kickers for auditions. Lawrence Tynes has been slow to recover from a toe injury. That’s left Derek Dimke as the only kicker in camp. If Tynes can’t get healthy, the Bucs could end up going with a kicker who is not presently on the roster.

Bucs agreed to terms with K Rian Lindell, formerly of the Bills.
It's bad news for Lawrence Tynes, who has been battling a toe injury. FOX Sports' Mike Garafolo believes Tynes is likely headed to injured reserve. Among the most experienced kickers in the league, Lindell should easily dispatch second-year UDFA Derek Dimke. Lindell's fading leg strength is the main reason he was cut loose by the Bills, but P Michael Koenen handles kickoffs in Tampa.

Mike, you agree Lindell should be able to hold off the rook? I've already got him in two leagues, not knowing Buffalo was going to dump him.

No... I think Dimke still has a decent shot of winning the job. The days when a veteran kicker had an inherent advantage over a rookie or second year player are gone.

And the plot thickens... Arizona Cardinals sign Dan Carpenter.
Rotoworld take:

Cardinals agreed to terms with K Dan Carpenter on a one-year contract.
Carpenter was released by the Dolphins last week in favor of the younger, cheaper Caleb Sturgis. Now he'll try to beat out veteran Jay Feely. Feely has been strong over the last three years, going 68-of-79 (86.0 percent) on field goals. That includes a 5-of-7 mark from 50+ yards out. Feely did miss a 30-yard attempt in the last preseason game, which coach Bruce Arians deemed "unacceptable."

ummm....don't be sold on Akers, you do not miss a 31 yard FG in the town that had Murray and Hanson.

KICKALICIOUS.

Peace

Rotoworld:

Bucs K Lawrence Tynes underwent toe surgery this week to remove a staph infection.
Tynes and Pro Bowl LG Carl Nicks have both been dealing with staph infections in their toes for the past couple of weeks. Tynes flew to New York to have the infection "scraped" out of his toe, and the Bucs responded by signing Rian Lindell. 35-year-old Tynes is out indefinitely.

http://www.packersnews.com/article/20130825/PKR0101/130825006/Packers-sign-kicker-Ramirez

After working out a couple kickers Sunday morning, the Packers signed former Portland State kicker Zach Ramirez.

Seems like they aren't happy with Crosby or Tevechio. Packers kicker probably isn't on their roster yet. I wouldthink they end up signing a veteran that is cut by another team.
Interesting as Crosby has responded in the last 2 games a bit...Tevechio cooled off and just does not seem to be ready.

Nothing too shocking though as I just don't trust Crosby and so many times last year it did not look like McCarthy did either.

Havard 'Kickalicious' Rugland released by Detroit Lions

By Kevin Patra

Havard "Kickalicious" Rugland's fun story ran its course this preseason after the Detroit Lions released the kicker Tuesday, the team announced.

The Norwegian YouTube sensation exceeded expectations in Lions' training camp and the preseason, but he never was a real threat to beat out veteran David Akers and replace the newly retired Jason Hanson.

Kickalicious went 3 for 3 on field goal attempts in the first two weeks of preseason, including a 50-yarder.

He proved he has the leg to kick in the NFL and could handle the spotlight. Unknown just a year ago, he couldn't have asked for much more than the shot to prove he can kick.

This isn't the last we've heard of Kickalicious.

Pity

Mike, have you seen any updates on the Lindell vs. Dimke battle, or will they look to this week's game to decide? You still thinking Dimke is the favorite?

J Giles Band said:
Mason Crosby just a little more job security... by taking a $1.6 million pay cut.
For now... actually makes it easier to release him during the regular season if he continues to struggle. Only $800,000 guaranteed if he's on the week 1 roster vs $2.4 million.
Some more details...

Fourth Kicking Competition Concludes: Packers over Mason Crosby over Zach Ramirez & Giorgio Tavecchio

  • $400,000 if he is still on the roster Week 5
  • $400,000 if he is still on the roster Week 10
  • $200,000 if he hits 75% on field goals
  • $200,000 if he hits 80% on field goals
  • $400,000 if he hits 85% on field goals

Tynes out for the season per Rotoworld

Lawrence Tynes - K - Buccaneers
Bucs placed K Lawrence Tynes on the reserve/non-football illness list.
The reserve/non-football illness list works like injured reserve, so Tynes is out for the season due to complications stemming from a staph infection. The Bucs have offered to pay his full $840,000 base salary, which Tynes surely will take. Tampa Bay's 2013 placekicker will be former Bill Rian Lindell.
