Wheelhouse - Interesting Stats, Info and Tidbits

Week 1

It's hard to believe I've been doing this every week of the NFL season for 4 years now. Thank you for all of your great feedback and comments throughout those years.

1. Serving up goose eggs - 3 teams shutout their opponent in week 1 of the 2006 NFL season. Baltimore, Chicago and San Diego. I'm no Elias Sports Bureau, but that's pretty impressive and I doubt that has ever happened before.

2. Equally impressive - 11 out of 16 road teams won their game week 1. Only NE, JAC, PIT, STL, ARI won at home. The Rams and Cardinals were the only teams from the NFC to win at home. Wow!

3. Airing it out - Despite only being three QB's who managed to reach 300 yards passing in week 1 (McNabb, Warner, Pennington), there were 10 QB's who had a passing play of 40 yards or more.

4. Interesting QB stat of the week - There was only 1 losing QB (starter) from week 1 that had a QB rating over 100. Can you guess who that might be?

5. Interesting QB stat of the week II - There were two QB's who had 40+ pass attempts in week 1. Oddly enough, neither of them reached the 300-yard plateau. One was Alex Smith (40) and the other was Peyton Manning (41). Again, I'm not Elias Sports Bureau, but I bet that might be the first time Peyton Manning has attempted 40 or more passes without reaching 300 yards.

6. Oh woe is me - Aaron Brooks only attempted 14 passes Monday night against the Chargers. He was sacked 7 times or 33.333% of the time he stepped back to pass. (edited to fix)

7. Who needs Eli? - The Giants as a team averaged 6.6 yards per carry against the Colts week 1. It's not like they had only 15 carries. The entire team had 28 carries. Now that, is impressive.

8. Week 1 leaders in yards per rush (min 10 carries)

6.9 T. Bell

6.8 B. Jacobs

6.6 J. Norwood

6.1 T. Barber

5.8 M. Bell

5.5 A. Green

5.5 S. Jackson

5.4 F. Gore

5.1 L. Maroney

4.6 W. Dunn

4.6 C. Dillon

8 R. Bush

6 F. Taylor, M. Strong, F. Gore

5 L. Johnson, Barber, Cadillac, K. Jones

4 Westbrook, S. Jackson, M. Bell, D. Foster, J. McKie (CHI)

10. Interesting Rb stat of the week - 14 RB's had at least a 20-yd run or longer. All 14 with the exception of these four RB's won their game. (Tatum Bell, Mike Bell and Julius Jones, Gore).

RB's with 20-yd runs or more include:

* Had two gains of 20+ yards

58 Tomlinson

39 T. Bell (L)

*37 S. Jackson

36 M. Bell (L)

32 Parker

32 Gore (L)

23 J. Jones (L)

22 Barber

22 R. Johnson

20 Buckhalter

FWIW - Buckhalter, Maroney and Mike Bell were the only ones who were not starters.

11. Tatum Bell - Has never had more than 17 carries in a game, but this week was his 5th 100-yd game.

12. WR's with at least 3 gains of 20 yards or more

4 Stallworth

3 Coles

3 A. Bryant

13. There were 19 WR's with gains of 30 yards or more. Only 4 of them scored a TD in week 1 and they were not the usual suspects (M. Jenkins, P. Burress, Berrian, Stallworth)

14. Interestingly enough - No WR in week 1 scored more than 1 TD.

Going further...

There were 6 WR's with 7 recs or more and none of them scored a TD.

9 Harrrison

9 Fitzgerald

8 Coles

8 Bennett

7 Driver

7 Holt

No scores!

15. Only one 100-yd WR scored a TD - Donte Stallworth.

one more tidbit re: 100-yd WR's...

Muhsin Muhammad and Andre Johnson were the only 100-yd WR's who did not have at least 8 targets (both had 7)

16. Everybody's favorite WR stat - Targets! Target Leaders thru week 1 (min 9 targets)

* Scored a TD

17 Bennett

15 Harrison

14 Fitzgerald

14 Holt

14 Chambers

9 Winslow (TE)

9 Heap (TE)

*9 Gore (RB) 2 TD's

17. Tight Ends they are a plenty - 11 TE's scored a TD in week 1. Again, no player here had more than 1 TD either.

TE's who scored a TD include: Gonzalez, Winslow, Da. Clark, A. Bergen, Shockey, Crumpler, D. Wilcox, V. Davis, C. Baker, Gates, H. Miller

18. Only 3 positional players outside of QB scored multiple TD's in week 1. Frank Gore, Travis Henry and Ronnie Brown - each scored 2.

19. Kick it up another notch - 7 kickers made 3 FG's or more in week 1.

6 Wilkins

4 Vinatieri, Gould, Carney

3 Graham, J. Brown, J. Hall

20. 4 kickers had 50+ yard boots - Lindell, Kasay, Wilkins, J. Brown

21. So who's worse between the 3 teams that were shutout? (TB, OAK, GB) Tale of the Tape!

Total offensive first downs

14 GB

9 OAK

8 TB

Total yards

267 GB

142 TB

129 OAK

3rd downs converted

3 TB

2 OAK

1 GB

FWIW - SF did not convert a single 3rd down!

22. Where's the Defense? - 8 teams did not have a single takeaway in week 1 (WAS, NE, OAK, CAR, PHI, TB, DEN, MIN)

23. Funny stat of the week - The league basement in pass completions for week 1 is 8, both accomplished by the Raiders and the Chargers, who oddly enough played each other.

Week 1

6. Oh woe is me - Aaron Brooks only attempted 14 passes Monday night against the Chargers. He was sacked 7 times or 50% of the time he stepped back to pass.
... and only completed one less pass than times he was sacked w/ 6.Edit to add: At least Andrew Walter completed as many passes as times he was sacked w/ 2 apiece.

If he attempted 14, was sacked 7 times, that means he dropped back 21 times. 7/21 = 1/3 of the time.Still very impressive

Ahhhh yes, I guess attempts does not equal drop backs. Ooops, thanks for correcting me.

Not only were there 3 shutouts, all three shutouts were courtesy of the visiting defense. Pretty impressive for 3 teams to go on the road and shutout the home team on opening week.

My guess for QB losing with 100+ rating is Alex Smith? Thanks Wheelhouse - you are the man!
Nope, but its someone like that that you wouldn't expect.
Frye?
Getting warmer... think of a west coast school alum.
David Carr
Yep, David Carr had a 102.1 QB rating in a losing effort - and he was sacked 5 times.
What was Eli's rating? He had a pretty good game in a losing effort....ETA...NOW IT'S FOOTBALL SEASON!?!?!?!

C'mon, son. Do your homework, ya slacker!
LOL ;) Do you know how many game logs that would be sifting through? Elias Sports Bureau anyone?
Here you are...First time in 15 years with three shutouts

NFL.com wire reports

NEW YORK (Sept. 12, 2006) -- The three shutouts on the NFL's opening weekend marked the first time in 15 years that three teams went scoreless in a single weekend.

Baltimore beat Tampa Bay 27-0, Chicago beat Green Bay 26-0 and San Diego capped the opening weekend with a 27-0 blanking of Oakland.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that marked the first time that had happened since Sept. 15, 1991, the third week of that season.

The Raiders beat the Colts 16-0; Philadelphia beat Dallas 24-0; and the Redskins beat the Cardinals 34-0 that year. The Raiders, then in Los Angeles, were coached by Art Shell, who returned this year to coach the team after being fired in 1994.

I'll do the work for you. This week marked the 32nd time Peyton Manning has attempted 40+ passes. He has failed to reach the 300 yard mark in 16 of those games (50% of the time), including one where he threw a whopping 52 passes (30 of 52 for 278/2/2).

2. Equally impressive - 11 out of 16 road teams won their game week 1. Only NE, JAC, PIT, STL, ARI won at home. The Rams and Cardinals were the only teams from the NFC to win at home. Wow!
And of these 5 home teams that won, 4 won with a margin of 8 or less points (1 score could have tied it up or beat them):NE +2JAC +7PIT +11 (and one TD was even a TD)STL +8 (and they didn't even score a TD)ARI +7 (withstood a last-minute San Francisco rally and onside kick)

I thought Mike Bell was the strater in Week 1 and Shanney has now switched it up for Week 2 starting Tatum Bell....Wheelhouse, as always a great job in bringing the little and overlooked pieces of information each week from the NFL... Keep up the good work

Nope. Tater was the starter, Mike came in on the second series.
