The annual I HATE CLOSERS thread (1 Viewer)

Manny Corpas, I hate you :towelwave: Its getting to the point where Lyon is one of my most effective closers.

And I dont understand the people who say not to reach for a closer early. Sure you can chase saves fairly easily during the year but good luck getting a guy who wont absolutely kill your ERA & WHIP.

Relievers are great to have when they are on. But man oh man watch out when they get tagged. It's tough to recoup from a bad closer outing as it pertains to ERA & WHIP in a week to week scenario. Valverde, Jenks, & Rodriguez all got tagged for me last week and killed my teams ratio stats. Suffice it to say...I feel your pain.

i'm not saying lyon is good at all. just noting the unpredictablility of closers. i saw his save the other night. the 1st pitch was blasted to the warning track. the difference b/w a scoreless save and 2-3 run explosion isn't that great.

i think trying to project closers is mostly a waste of time. sure, some are better pitchers than others, but i'll just always take the route of the lowest investment possible. good closers can get rocked. bad closers can look good at times.

Barring injury you can pretty much guarantee at least 35 saves and good ratios if you draft a top 5 closer though (Rivera, Papelbon, Putz, etc.)

you're exactly right and i know that was the original point you were making.getting an anchor may be a good idea, but i've just never done it. i usually go the route that it sounds like you took (in every league, i took guys from the soriano/capps/corpas-class down to cj wilson-types) and i still think it works out best in the end. i prefer quantity over quality, so drafting a stud would mean forsaking quantity (if i were to take a mariano, i could never justify using 5-6 roster spots on RPs too). i also don't think i could bare the annoyance of using a 4th round pick on a closer if they got hurt.

the value of a stud closer probably has alot to do with the innings limits in the league. if the limits are low, the value of a stud goes up. if the limits are really high, the damage a ####ty closer will do can be minimized and the excellent ratios of a stud closer won't help as much.

I think it depends a lot on the competitiveness of your league.People always say you can easily chase saves during the year, and that's true if you're in a casual league with your buddies. But if you're in a very competitive league, everybody's going to be racing to the wire when a team makes a closer change, or even carrying the best closer prospects on their rosters. Thinking "I'll just pick one up later" can be playing with fire.

I spent some early picks myself on Putz and Saito... both, not paying off... I picked up G sherrll off the WW and he's been nothing but $$$ for me.... I guess i am 50/50 on if getting Putz early was a good thing, Seattle couldnt buy a win lately

Luckily for me I have Putz and Saito that were way too good of a value at the places I took them to pass them up. I invested way too early on closers and now look like I'm tanking that category thanks to blown saves, injuries, and few save chances.

Are you making fun of me? or just a coensidence on closers

Coincidence. Took Putz right after the turn in the 6th and took Saito in the end of the 9th. Both seemed like good values and very safe picks to a guy like me who was doing his first baseball draft in 10 years. Right now I only have those two and Accosta as closers with some middle reliever types that have gotten me a few wins and saves and bolstered my ERA and WHIP but I'm really far behind in Saves for sure.

Betancourt and Gregg both take losses for me tonight. First time I'm hating closers since the Borowski debacle.

Joe Nathan got a save though. If only they could all be Joe Nathan.

One of my closers (Acosta) blows the save opportunity for another of my closers (Capps) :wall:

Acosta wasn't in a save situation, his team was losing 3-0 when he came in in the 8th
Follow along... I have Acosta & Capps. If the Braves get through that inning without allowing a run, Capps gets a save opp. Instead they bring in Acosta, he gives a 2R HR ruining the save opp for Capps AND giving me an 18.00 ERA.

Two of my top 3 closers got demoted: Gagne and Isringhausen. I'm kinda glad I don't have to use them anymore, they were killing my ERA and WHIP. Luckily I am 2nd in saves, down by 2. So I should have some time to hold my posiition. I'm going to roll with Sherrill, Joba, Marmol and Kuo as my RPs. I'll get some saves and my ERA and WHIP should go down.
