The Apple iPhone Thread (1 Viewer)

Former Samsung guys needs some iPhone guidance as iPhone burns data way faster that galaxy did. Was out of town 4 days without wifi so added an extra GB and somehow iPhone burned through that in a day. Hit up wifi whenever I can and have turned data off for some apps but what a headache need some pointers. Still have 10 days left in bill cycle and never used this much data w galaxy in 4 years wtf.
You using siri a lot?

They told me $150 for my wife's 6+ at AT&T if you're paid off or close to it (6 months early?).

I expressed that $150 was low and he agreed I could get more elsewhere. Wife doesn't need a phone yet so no reason to upgrade at such a loss. I'm hoping the 10-year anniversary of the iPhone next year brings new and wonderful things, like edge to edge screen and wireless charging.
Im completely paid off. I just can't wait any longer, my phone is a crap shoot at this point.

I might just take the loss. Or see if I can sell it to a family member or friend.

Make sure your Wi-Fi assist is off.

Setting>Cellular>bottom of the page. If it's on, the phone will use data even when connected to wi-fi
Couple of other simple things. Also double-push the home button to see all the programs that are open. Swipe up on the program to close that program.

Another: Settings > Privacy > Location Services. Turn off location services for everything you can. GPS uses lots of data. I have LS off for all programs and only "While Using" for Maps and Google Maps. The rest can be turned on if you need them.

It seems every app asks to do push notifications and wants location services on. Some random app doesn't need to know where I am in the world. I noticed Sunday Ticket requires LS be on to work. I suppose due to blackout rules but I don't like it. The Vikings are blacked out on the app but I can watch them on my local channel through Directv. Why would it be blacked out? I digress.

I believe these few tips along with disabling wifi assist (which I leave on BTW and it doesn't seem to add much to usage but I have 30 GB) will take care of your problems. I like to just click on every field in the phone to see what it does; I err on the side of privacy and do not track.

Yeah, got mine yesterday.

They're good, although they look stupid.  I love the functionality, fit, and feel.  Just like the earpods without the wires, which is what I wanted as they kept getting snagged on things as I listen to audiobooks and podcasts and work around the house.

Syncing couldn't have been easier.  Synced with phone, worked on laptop with same icloud account.

Very useful with an apple watch to control playback and volume. Without the apple watch I'd like them less.

One thing I find that I miss is any ability to tap them directly to pause.  Also, while talking on a call and just using my watch to control volume and all, there's no easy way to mute myself which is disappointing.

All in all, I like them.
Pros

Syncing was done right. Very simple and easy

Cons

Price is way to high for the sound and build quality. The sound quality you get is no better than the normal Earpods. There really is no real benefit over normal Bluetooth sets with the exception of the simple pairing process which in the end just isn't that hard for Bluetooth.  While the fit is comfortable for what they are you will lose them eventually. The fit in my ear was not good.  I think sitting at a desk working they will be fine but any type of real movement and they will be out quickly. Finally the build quality feels cheap like they should be given away with the phone.  Just not good at all.  Add to that the iFixit breakdown make them look worse to me.

Overall

These are a big pass as they are very poor quality for the price point.  I would suggest take the Jaybird Freedoms all day over these in that price range. The Freedoms are a much better product with great sound quality, quality EQ app, and metal housings.

I came from the Plantronics BackBeat Fit bluetooth headphones and I'd have to disagree on a few points:
- The build quality is quite good.  The headphones are as solid and slick as one would expect from apple.  In fact, some tests have shown that even running the headphones and the case through the wash won't stop these from working normally.  They have a good weight, nice polish.  The case snaps shut in a satisfying way, and the airpods snap into the case magnetically too in a nice way...the whole feel is very nice, polished, and what I'd expect from Apple.  No idea what standards you're used to that are over and above what this headset is.
- The price isn't way high for what you get.  The Plantronics I was using before bumped up against $100 and had wires from ear to ear.  Anything comparable to two wireless earbuds of decent quality is in this range.
- There are a number of benefits over normal bluetooth: no wire going from ear-to-ear, better fit for me (earpods have always fit really well), I can listen/talk with just one of them in a single ear, time and ease of charging is a big deal with a quick recharge capable in the case as well as always having a charging station with you so long as you have the case.  For most other bluetooth headsets you need a separate USB cable, and a power source like a computer, battery, wall outlet, etc.  There are definitely benefits over other bluetooth headsets.
- In terms of falling out of my ears, I can shake my head vigorously (making my cheeks flap) and they stay in.  I can turn my head upside down and they stay in.  I can run, jog, and jump with them in my ears and they stay in.  I'm not sure what activities you're doing that would put them through more stress than that, but I'm just not seeing it.  May just come down to differently shaped ears or perhaps you don't have them placed in your ear properly.  Others have reported good stability as well in early tests.

Regarding sound quality...this is something I've never really understood, so I won't really go in depth on it.  I understand there are some headphones that are really poor, and some that are amazing, and audiophiles care about a lot of what speakers can do.  For the vast majority of folks, when the sound quality is above the "good enough" range, people don't care too much about a 20% gain on pretty damn good.  There's nothing tinny, volume gets plenty loud for me, voices, singing, songs I like sound fine.  I'm sure there are better headphones out there but if one of your complaints is that it's already too pricey, you start getting into even pricier territory when sound quality, wireless, and bluetooth come into play.

I have a feeling these things are going to be a HUGE hit for apple.  The only downsides I see are how easily you can lose them, and how damned stupid you look when wearing headphones that stick out of your ears like this.  I always thought folks walking around with the old bluetooth earpieces looked silly before...this takes it up a new level.  I would wear my earpods in public, while eating, but with these things...nah.  Maybe when it becomes a bit more normal to have folks walking around with these things sticking out of their ears, but for now...it's just odd or it'd be seen as a status, hey look at me, thing.

Yeah, I had that issue too with my Iphone 7....still happens from time to time.  Sometimes it happens when I get a notification on my phone (email, text) and sometimes for just no reason it'll stop.  No idea why that happens.  I know the iPhone 7 was having trouble synching with a lot of car BT systems...mine included.

Like I mentioned I am comparing them to the Jaybird Freedoms which are in the same price range.   If you are dropping 150+ on wireless head phones I want good ones.  Non workout I use the B&O Plays.

The build quality just is not that good on the Airpods, The only fasteners on both the case and the airpos is glue.  I do not believe they would make it through mutliple wash cycles.  Just not that well built.  I don't think Apple even rates them as water or dust resistant.  The Jaybird are injection molded metal and water resistant.  Your right about the things that don't matter.  I could care less about the case, if they use the mags to stay in pace in the case or not.  When I talk about build quality I'm talking about the headphones only.  They are nice for a pair of boxed head phones.

Not having the wire from ear to ear make them easier to lose and harder to keep in place.  I would rather have the wire connecting them than not.  I have looked at several truly wireless sets and none of them stay in good enough to run around with daily.   The Jaybird in above ear wear style will not move or fall out especially if you decide to use the wings.  I wouldn't trust the Airpods outside my office for fear of losing them and the $69 replacement coast each is just to much.  I have worn my Freedoms Skiing, Mountain Biking and Zip lining with out worrying about losing them.  Where simple jumping jacks would pop the Airpods out of my ears.

Not sure where your going on price.  The Airpods are $160 not even close to $100 mark. Better sound and better built sets are available from Plantronics, Beats, Jaybird, and JBL. Even bose has the sound sports cheaper than the Airpods.  I don't care about sound quality if I am buying a $30 set of Earpods. They have the build quality and sound I expect at that price point.  The Airpods are $160 and sound exactly the same as the Earpods minus the wires.  Losing the wires is not worth another $130 to me.  If I'm spending 150+ for a set of headphones I want a quality build, quality sound, and for them to stay in my ears.  Once again I would look at the JayBird Freedoms ($179), Bose SoundSport Wireless ($149),  Beats Powerbeats 2 ($129), or the JBL Reflect Mini ($99).  All of these have better sound quality and build than the Airpods.  If you truly want wire free there are still better options out there in the Samsung and Earin products but as I said if you are active these are not good solutions.

Just made the switch to iphone and having an issue with Calendar notifications....it's set to vibrate, show in notification center and lock screen but I get no notifications and miss events due to it. What am I missing besides my meetings?

Are notifications somehow turned off for Calendar? You can also adjust the vibration intensity (giggle) in settings too.

Are you somehow connected to a Bluetooth device ?

Considering upgrading from my 6 to the 7 or 7 plus.

Verizons new plans have me rethinking my plan to move to straight talk, $60/5GB or $80/Unliminited will likely keep me with them.

Thet said, looking for impressions from folks who made a similar upgrade. Battery life comparison? Also, what is the cheapest way to get one, as an existing customer?

I just switched from AT&T to Verizon upon finding out about the Unlimited plan, no brainer IMO. Had an Android (Samsung Galaxy S6 Active) and was planning to make the switch back to iPhone, as I had them since the 3GS.

I have a question I can't seem to find an answer on, even in the Apple forums. I have a group iMessage that when people start chiming in is non-stop vibrations. I turned on Do Not Disturb for the group, and that fixed banner notifications on the lock screen. However, the phone still vibrates on the lock screen for this group when messages come in and it's driving me nuts. Anyone know of a fix for this? I know I can leave the group, just trying to avoid that if at all possible.

It's possible one of the people in the group is a "favorite" or otherwise set so their messages are always heard

I haven't manually set anyone as a favorite, so that takes that out.

Apple Forum said to turn off DND, do a reset holding the volume down button, and turn DND back on the group and see what happens. If it still vibrates after that, I call uncle and might just bounce from the group.

iPhone 8 comes out in 4 month.  No brainer to wait for it.

Would agree...it's the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, the new Apple Campus is opening...should be a big year for the iPhone.  Talk of an iPhone 8 and 7s updates...talk of Mixed Reality features, better everything really.  Worth waiting if you can, even though launch likely won't be until September.

I'm going to pay a bit more attention this time. I've got a 6 plus, which is still working perfectly and my son has a 6 and both have been completely paid since last year. I already upgraded my wife because she was switching to using that for her work phone, but when the 7 came out there was that awesome trade in for $650, way above the trade in price. I completely missed seeing that anywhere so I missed my chance. I don't want to miss that again. I'll be interested to see if AT&T does it again. If not, we'll keep using the ones we've got.

One quick note for anyone who encounters it. My son's 6 had an issue charging, he'd have to wiggle it or use a specific charger or it wouldn't charge. I found an article and it said to try cleaning out the charging port. It worked like a charm. I used a Q-tip and took most of the cotton off, but left enough so that when I spun it around in the port it grabbed a bunch of lint.

I had the same problem a while back.  It felt the like the port was loose, but it turned out there was just enough lint in the port to prevent the plug from seating all the way in.  I took it to Apple and the guy said all he did was take a little compressed air to it.

Sure it's been covered but new to the thread. Just got a work iPhone 7. When on 4G, can't get to certain apps, always getting a 'network error' on Facebook or the app simply not loading. On wi-fi it's all good, can get to anything I like. Mainly applies to socail sites like Facebook, Twitter, Snapface and the like but also blocks Youtube from loading.

My question, is this something my work is blocking or is there a setting on the phone I'm missing to make the magic happen when on 4G? Annoying right now but tolerable. I cna see it being an issue when I'm in a far away place with no wi-fi access. TIA

hey gb, sounds like a work issue.

I did a screen replacement on a 4 a few months back.  You can get a kit for like $30.  The 6 may have a more expensive replacement screen, though.
I'm hoping a buddy can fix it. He think he can do it for $50. He used to work for Verizon, so I trust him more than I trust myself to do it. Was hoping to hold out on a new one until the 8 comes out.

Little pieces of glass and such?
Oh yeah, it spider cracked big time. It's pretty hard to read anything at the top of my screen.

It had to have hit something when it fell out of my hand. I have an Otterbox case on it, but it didn't seem to make a difference.

About a year ago my wife put her phone on top of the car when putting our son in the kids seat.  She forgot to grab it when we took off.  We actually made it out of the neighborhood and onto the highway before it fell.  I found it later that day, cracked screen but still everything worked.

Word to the wise - don't go cheap on thos replacements and just get the "glass", get the entire kit that includes the glass and the screen behind it.  You'll never get all the little pieces of glass and glue off to reuse the touchscreen.

Yeah he's going to do the whole thing. He apparently does this as a sort of side gig since he used to be a tech a VZW a few years ago.

I'm just bitter it happened lol. This is the first phone I've ever broken. Which coincidentally, is the first phone I've ever had a case for.

If it is the 6 and not the s or plus you should be able to find a very cheap place to fix it . I just got my daughter's 6 screen fixed for $37 in Memphis.

Yep! Patton Computers in Collierville is damn near free for older iPhone screen replacements and they do a great job.

Yes they do,  this was about the 7th time I've used them in the past 2 years. All but this last one was an iPhone 5s or earlier, was very glad to see a 6 now included in that dirt cheap price.

After being on Amdroid a while and now on Apple...any refs for a good weather app?

WeatherBug for Android was good...not so much for iOS.

Stock app is fine for forecasts...but i want something with decent radar, the ability to get tornado warnings (while not getting alerts for every watch and minor weather advisories...waking me up at night for a thunderstorm warning is no bueno).  And, if possible, lightning proximity (weatherbug used some spark lightning proximity thing which was great)

And not a huge fan of the weather channel stuff the stock app takes you to.

I use MyRadar and Zoom Weather.

I like weather underground.

I'll buy it. Soon as I can.

With the amount of time I spend on my iPhone, personal/work, it's a no brainer value proposition for me to have the best possible device I can. Lord knows I spend money on way dumber things that I've never used.
