The Apple iPhone Thread (2 Viewers)

So my 3Gs is pretty awesome so far, however, I have an issue with email.

My hotmail account is set-up and fine, however, my work email is screwy. It's also web-based (POP) I guess. I can receive email just fine, however when I send it I get a prompt that "Cannot Send Mail: Sender Address was Invalid"

WTF?

I've heard of people having issues with holding a charge but no problem with our 3Gs.Also, I don't know if it was this thread but was talk of how to hook up to car stereo. I don't have an AUX. I went to a car audio place and they wanted $250 to hook me up ($50 of that was labor). I said I just wanted an AUX plug but the guy was convinced I wanted to go his route. Which is to have a plug like your charger installed. So you get all features, plus it charges while you play, and the sweetest part is that you can control the music from your steering wheel controls.Kind of pricey but I'm glad I went that route.
it is awesome but just hope they don't switch charging options on future iPhones. I had what you bought for my old iPod. Loved it. Old iPod broke and I bought one of the new ones. Music plays but it won't charge because it is FireWire and the iPods are now USB. It never worked on my iPhone, charge or play so it sounds like you have an upgraded unit. Mine just sits in my glove compartment now since I don't carry my iPod on me at all times anymore.
They will switch. If i i remember correctly, apple finally signed on to a standard mini-usb cable for charging and data transfer for future generations. Some push industry wide for all mobile phone companies to use standard charging hardware.

Is it just me or do these things not stay charged very long? I think I heard somewhere (this thread maybe) that using 3G can drain it.
It does, so does having the screen brightness turned up, and extended use of certain apps, particularly the GPS/Map.
Also, having PUSH enabled for anything, applications, mail, etc...will drain your battery very quickly. It's best to not use Push unless you absolutely need it, or at least limit it to checking to every 30 minutes or so.

I think the default setting for this is "manually"... which works for me.I also set the brightness at about 1/4 of the slider bar and turned OFF auto brightness.Turning off the Wi-Fi is also a good way to saving juice.

BTW, the main reason Jailbreaking a phone is worth it, to me at least, is that you can run programs in the background.

I can have pandora playing in the background, or any other internet radio program, and still surf, or look at maps, etc. It's pretty slick. Used through a program called "Backgrounder" available only through Cydia (afaik), which you get when you jailbreak.

Also, winterboard is pretty cool, and you can make your own theme and change icons. Also, if you were so inclined, you could install another program through cydia to run SKYPE over your 3G connection, which is normally not allowed.

Sent mail will route through the server you have defined under "Outgoing Mail Server" SMTP for that mail account. If you click the box that says "SMTP" you should see a list of SMTP servers with at least one set to "On". Click on the one set to "On" and check your server settings to make sure that it's pointed to your work SMTP server and that the authentication settings are correct. If that all looks good, go back to the first settings page for your work email account and make sure that your work email (as opposed to any other email address you have) is listed in the "Address" field. It sounds like the SMTP server you're trying to send mail through is restricting mail relaying to specific email addresses, a specific domain, or to specific user accounts and it doesn't recognize the sender address you're using for that mail account.

Would you suggest buying the iPhone at the Apple store, or at an AT&T store? I've heard that the employees at the AT&T store will do a better job of setting up your AT&T account.
Based on the zoo that I witnessed on multiple visits to the Apple store, I would suggest you get set up at the AT&T store. The only problem I had was having to wait "7-10 business days" (which was actually only just 3 days before Fedex delivered my iphone  ). It took a couple of extra days for my wifes iphone to arrive (I got the 32gb and she got the 16gb - must be a higher demand for the 16gb).And if you do the AT&T store, I would highly suggest that you make an appt over the phone (or else you'll get stuck putting your name on a piece of paper and end up standing around for a long time).
I also heard that at the Apple Store, they can't set up a Family Calling plan. I also get a discount through my employer. Can they apply that discount at the Apple Store? I understand probably not on the iPhone, but what about on the calling plan?
They set up the family plan just fine for me at the Apple Store on Sunday.

:blackdot: Having the same issue with a verizon.net account.

thats cool and all but I drain my phone in a 8-5 day and sometimes drain my recharge battery as well. I can't imagine how fast it would go red running apps in the background

Thank you! This did the trick.

Weird, mine lasts at least a day with moderate usage. Listening to music, surfing, checking mail...you must be a heavy user.

Anyone else have problems with WIFI connectivity after they upgraded to 3.0?

I did a search on the internet and found that while not rampant, it is rather common on the 3G. They think it has something to do with the phone running hot due to increased processing required for the new update. So far there is no fix from what I can find. Thankfully 3G surfing the web/etc. is a perfectly acceptable speed, so I hasn't bothered me that much.

Had a minor situation with my 3G S this week. The tip of the jack on the cassette adapter came off inside the headphone jack. Made the phone useless because I could get no sound from it, as it always acted like headphones were plugged in. I tried the thinnest precision needle-nose pliers I have, but still too big to get in there. After some googling, and getting up enough nerve to try it, I used a small dot of super glue to join it back with the main jack and then pulled it out after it dried. Whew.

I'm finding that it really depends on what apps you're running. Some of them drain the power quickly. I used one regularly over the past week and was having to charge twice a day. Didn't use that one much today and currently at 50% power.

I've tried to set up hotmail several times and have failed every time, does anyone have a good link for tech dummies to set up?

It does, so does having the screen brightness turned up, and extended use of certain apps, particularly the GPS/Map.
Having Bluetooth and/or WiFi enabled will also drain it pretty quickly. I just ordered the Tekkeon MP1200 case/external battery so I can keep everything turned up to the max all day. The reviews also claim (but I have not yet verified) that you can sync the iPhone to your iTunes with a plain old mini-USB cable through the Tekkeon case. If it works, that would be pretty sweet -- it's easy to lay your hands on a mini-USB cable in an emergency. One of the proprietary iPod cables, not so much.
:blackdot:
This is a pretty cool case. It performs as advertised -- pretty much doubles the battery life of the phone, and allows you to charge and sync with iTunes via a plain old mini USB cable. It rocks. Also, unlike the other external battery case I had (the FastMac IV), it does not affect your signal reception at all when it is on your phone.Between the thickness it adds to the phone and the border around the screen it makes the phone a little bigger than I would like, but it definitely makes it easier to grip reliably. And the border around the screen really helps protect the phone if you happen to drop it or hit the front bezel on something.

The only downside I've seen is if you use the speakerphone to talk, it does muffle the sound of your voice. And I had to crank up the brightness of the phone a little because one of the straps partially blocks the light sensor. But I was able to run the phone flat out with high brightness, WiFi, Bluetooth, and full-on push email from an Exchange server for about two days and still had some battery left.

Also, if you have the 3Gs, you can make the battery percentage remaining show up in your top bar by going to Settings>General>Usage and flipping "Battery Percentage" to On.

Wow, I didn't know until I searched that Hotmail was such a pain to set up on the iPhone. Looks like MS only enabled POP support in January of this year and they set their POP mail port to 995, which is probably why the defaults don't work. This sounds right to me:

First off, the POP server needs to be pop3.live.com (port 995), while the SMTP server is smtp.live.com (port 25). Users will have to provide their full Windows Live ID (username@hotmail.com), and then the password that they have associated with the account. They have to bear in mind the fact that the Windows Live Hotmail POP3 service must use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) both with the POP and SMTP connection, as well as take advantage of SMTP authentication. Thus, users will have to specify that POP SSL and Authentication are indeed required, with the same being valid for TLS/SSL

FYI:Not sure if anyone else had this, but my chrome tip fell off the silent switch.I took it to the apple store, and they gave me a new phone for free. It was considered a "manufacturer defect". Pretty sweet since I was about to just super glue the thing back on (I don't think it would have made a difference).Obviously you don't want anything to go wrong, but I like that they just took care of it, no questions asked.
that just happened to mine the other day, I am taking it back once I get back to Cali. I just wish they would give me a 3gs when I do
Strange that the entire phone is pretty much bulletproof (I've never used a case, and have literally not a single scratch on the screen, looks like the day I got it), but they can't get a little chrome button to stay on.

i have a problem with charging my new 3gs - try to use the wall plug that I have used for years with my original iphone and it says not compatable with the new one - what do you use to charge if not charging/synching on the computer? I have a car charger that works but need one for travel.....any help?

I would try the wall plug that came with the 3Gs. The old EDGE model iPhone had a different power spec than the 3G/3Gs does.

It's way down in the bottom of the box -- there are a couple of inserts you have to remove to even see it.

I hear you can get 3 full charges from this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...325&creativeASIN=B002BVL2KS target=_blankhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002BVL2K...ASIN=B002BVL2KS</a>"]external battery pack from Amazon. Don't get the rebranded 3GJuice Major Mojo since it is the same product that they charge an extra $20.
That sounds about right -- @5400 mAh it's about 1/3 bigger than the 3100 mAh FastMac IV, and that would charge the phone almost from scratch twice.

What do people use for earphones when the ones that come with the iPhone go kaput? Mine are on their way out and I need to get something else. I need something that also has a microphone (like the ones that come with it) as I use them for talking on the phone when in the car. Besides that, I use them for listening to music at work.

Maybe it's just me, but ever since I got the iPhone I don't like my iPod anymore - it seems clunky and limited. I don't think I've used it more than once in the past month.

While the size is a bit chunky, the weight is not, I plugged it in last night and it was fully charged this morning. I will take it on a 4 day weekend trip this weekend and report back.

Okay, is there any other types of screen protectors for the iPhone, the plastic ones I buy always get dirty on the edges and become less sticky and eventually don't stick at all, and despite my greatest efforts, it still manages to bubble. Very annoying.

I've been going screen protector-free for the past 2 months and have come to the conclusion that they are a rip-off and a scam. Don't buy em. I carry mine in my pocket with keys and my money clip or in my bag. So far, nuttin'. Go commando, you'll love how it feels.

i posted this in dodds' stock thread. no response over there so i am trying here...

With Apple poised to launch the iphone in China within the next 6 months, I think the stock may be poised to show significant gains. Same goes for Chinese carrier (China Unicom) too. However, in the domestic market, I think much of the success of the iphone is tied to the App Store. Part of hat makes the iphone "special" versus other touch/smart phones is the functionality offered through these apps. Does anyone have insight or opinion about the App Store being ready for the Chinese market? Will it be ready for the new Chinese iphone users?

how can i view email attachments?? When I click on the icon, all it does is zoom in. :goodposting:
If it's a recognized attachment type, it will usually show up in a flat rounded rectangle box with a right arrow > on the right hand side. Clicking that box should launch the attachment. If the attachment doesn't appear like that, my guess is that it might be an unrecognized file type.Send yourself some PDF files or MS Office files to test -- they are all valid attachment types for the iPhone.

Is there any reason to not install Adobe Flash Player on my 3GS?
:thumbup:I was wondering the same thing.
You can do that? I thought Flash didn't work on the iPhone/Touch...
I'm thinking he means jailbreaking...but I'd like to know this as well.
No, my 3GS is not jailbroken.
Interesting, I'd like to hear more about how this is possible.

I don't know if it's possible. I tried to stream a local radio show and was prompted to download Adobe Flash Player. I didn't want to try without checking around first. I checked Apple.com and it said Safari 4 supports Adobe Flash Player, but I am still unsure about the iPhone. Googling produces old articles hinting at this being a possibility. :X

Last I heard about flash on the iphone is that adobe has said it is a lot harder than tbey thought. They are/were making a version of flash for the iphone but had to start at square one build from there. BTW Apple & Adobe dont have tbe best business relationship
