The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

what programs are you guys using to make iPhone videos? i was using Handbrake, but i find the volume is too low (headphones or built in speaker). so i've switched to Videora iPhone Converter because you can boost the volume while you convert. however Videora is a little clunky and not as efficient speed and file size wise. are there any other options that have some sort of volume boost?

Here's a good review of 3 of them i found on macrumors:

Yes, I'm one of those nuts who bought all three. But Navigon has been returned.Briefly these are the differences:----------------------------------Sygic-------TomTom-------NavigonVisual speed warning:-------------- Yes -------Yes----------- NoAudio speed warning: --------------Yes ------- No ----------- NoRed light camera warning: ----------Yes -------Yes----------- NoSpeed camera warning -------------Yes -------Yes------------NoWarn when approach school:--------Yes --------No ----------- NoUse standard iPhone keyboard--------No --------Yes-----------YesPinch/spread maps------------------ No --------Yes ---------- YesSimulation of trip ------------------- Yes--------Yes --------- Not reallyEasy to read navigation screen-------Yes--------Yes --------- Not so goodRoad contains speed limit------------ 99.99%---99.99% ------ 0.00001%?How up to date is the map------------Very -----Very ------ Not as to datePrice--------------------------------$80--------$100-------- $70Uses iphone interface ---------------Not at all---fully---------- fullyGPS reception strength ------------- Strongest--Medium------WeakestChoose night and day skin----------- No---------Yes --------- NoUser-defined distance b4 POI warning--Yes----does not warn--Does not warnContact integration------------------ No ------ Yes ---------- YesPOI quality-------------------------- Good -----Good--------Not as good.Reality view--------------------------No--------No-----------YesHope this helpsMy preference now:1. Sygic2. TomTOm3. NavigonMy most likely long term preference:1. TomTom2. Sygic3. NavigonI'm defnitely not going to settle for Navigon. However, I'm still quite evenly split between TT and Sygic. This could flip either way depending on what they do in the next version. If no more update is done to existing version, my choice is Sygic. However, once TomTom fixed the overspeeding audio warning, and provide warning in school zone, TT will be undisputed Champion. My sticking with Sygic is very likely to be a short, temporary thing. I'm quite sure TomTom will fix the above problem, so if you have to take a bet, I'll say go with TomTom still.

Looking at tomtom. Some dumb questions:

it does automatic turns on the screen and voice? Does it pause music/phone when announces?

Its a one time fee? $99 is a ton for an app. Worth it?

Heard it will be better when cradle comes out. Is this true? When is it due?

I use the free map app now and have never had a gps so any advice would be appreciated!

Question for iPhone users: heard the disturbing announcement on two recent USAir flights that USAir does NOT recognize the Airplane Mode of the iPhone which means we are not allowed to use it at all in flight. Anyone else here this? That seems crazy to me.

There's a link on one of these pages to a site that let's you upload and clip your own music or search the innerwebs for created ringers. You can download the ringer in m4r format as well as others. You just save them to your PC and load them into iTunes and sync up. It's Audiko.

Not sure about that. I will look into it.

That doesn't make any sense. I assumed that Airplane Mode basically just shut down the phone's communication abilities. I didn't think the airlines had anything to do with it.

I have a friend that wants to jailbreak her 1st gen so she can sell it for an extra $50 - any tips, advice or links I can pass on to her?

:construction: Im thinking of jailbreaking mine right now. The warranty is pretty much up so that wont matter.

I agree but on two different flights the announcer clearly said that. I posted this on the Apple forums and people are suggesting that they meant for take off and landing, ie. the iPhone must be off for those instead of in Airplane Mode, but Airplane Mode is fine once you're above 10k feet or whatever. That does make some sense, so maybe that's what they meant.

This was the case on a Southwest flight.

I don't see how the TomTom app could be worth it. $99 plus the cradle (which will probably be $50+) is just too much when you can get a standalone TomTom from BestBuy for $150 and not hassle with having it switch off when you get a call or worry about the music/directions conflicts.

Doesn't matter anyway. Easy enough to wipe away jailbreak software and restore to Apple crapulance.Redsn0w works very well and is quite easy to use. Follow the instructions and that's it.

I used QuickPWN when I jailbroke mine. Very simple and quick. Although keep in mind some of the newer firmware versions of iPhones can't yet be jailbroke.

You mean your microphone? ;) Assuming it's still under warranty, just make an appointment with the Genius Bar nearest you. You can make appointments online. They're pretty decent. Most of the time, they just swap you out with a refurbed phone and move all your stuff over.

Yeah it should be under warranty. never heard of this Genius Bar though. seems pretty simple.

i bought my phone through at&t. whats this one to one thing they are asking me?

New FB update is great - but I had to DL the entire app as it wasnt showing up as an update

Also purchased Navigon for the reduced price and am very pleased with it - glad I didn't spend the extra $30 for TT at this point.

I think there is a beta for QuickPWN 3.0, but nothing official yet. Redsn0w works just like QuickPWN as does the same thing for 3.0.

Question from the wife....How does one switch between apps on the iPhone? She wants here mail running in the background, itunes etc and then be able to switch between them without having to exit the app, start the other, rinse and repeat. I told her I had no clue but would ask my iPhone fanboys in the FFA.....TIA.

Jailbreaking it is the only way to do this, I believe.

Mail runs in the background by default, so long as she's using the iphone app. It'll check periodically for mail, if that's what she means. You can set it to check mail as frequently as you want (within reason).Itunes, if she means the music player iPod, it will also run in the background natively without need for jailbreak. Just start a song, switch to the internet or any other app, and go.Now, if she wants to listen to say, pandora, and do other things, then she'd be required to jailbreak her phone and install an app called "backgrounder" which works GREAT! Its' very nice to have. But, it sounds like, unless I'm misunderstanding, that what she wants can be done without any modifications.

Mail can just be pushed to the iPhone at a specified interval and the post above is correct about the rest. Backgrounder would facilitate this on a jailbroken phone (I have it myself and works great). The iPhone is not a Palm Pre.

My wife and I recently got iPhones and all has gone beautifully until now.

My wife uses her iPhone to sync with her Outlook calendar at work. This works fine, and her appts and meetings show up on her iPhone, however when she syncs to our home laptop (Macbook Pro), everything syncs except for items that came to her phone thru Outlook. If she enters anything directly into her calendar on the iPhone it will sync to the laptop.

I entered all the Patriots games into my Outlook at work and sent her invites thinking that would be the easiest way to get that into everyone's calender, this has obviously not worked as planned.

Anybody have any tips to correct this?

Thanks for the link to the NFL schedule. This fails to help with our problem getting things entered into Outlook to transfer to iCal on the home laptop however.
