I've never faced this issue, but I'm guessing you could probably set your phone to sync manually, then just uncheck the apps in iTunes that you don't want to load onto your iPhone.

Ok do I've read about this problem and it just happened to me last night. Basically my phone freaked out and now music isn't showing up on my phone anymore. According to the phone info screen they're there because my memory usage hasn't changed. The songs just dissapeared. Any fix for this or is this a restore phone kinda thing. Haven't tried syncing up to iTunes yet but I have a feeling it won't work. I've already tried two hard resets to no avail.

Try syncing it. Sometimes it happens when you're syncing files and during the middle of the sync, the connection is broken...or it could happen if you sync it to another computer and it starts removing the files and you disconnect it. Should be easily fixable by syncing it with your primary computer.

Connect to wifi and you can likely download it. It just doesn't let you download big files over 3G or E. AFAIKWhy don't you just download iTunes on your computer?

Any of you jog with your iPhone?
I went jogging yesterday and I had to hold the phone while running. I put it in my shorts pocket, but it was swinging too much. I put it in the pouch pocket of my pullover hoodie, but was scared it would fall out. Even as I held it, I was afraid I would drop it (dog leash attached to crazy dog in other hand).
Any good suggestions for an armband or something else?

bought CoPilot Live last week & so far I really like it.
btw if anyone needs a case I highly recommend the speck candyskin. I dropped my phone on pavement yesterday & it bounced a few times landing screen down & it caje out unscathed.

Coolest iphone compliment to date for me is the Synology Diskstation DS209
Basically, it's a network hard drive (NAS). But it's got a slick web-based interface, AND some nifty iphone applications. I hooked it up to my network, and mapped the network drives to my computer. I now have an M: drive that keeps just my itunes stuff. Anyway, I point my iTunes to look at the M: drive, and I store all my iTunes stuff there.
Now for the neat part...Using Synology's DS Audio app, I can browse, make playlists, and play ALL the music on my M: drive, without having to sync anything to the iPhone. It streams it either over WiFi or 3G. I can even see album artwork. It also has similar apps for photos, where you organize all your photos and you can use an app to view your entire photo collection on the iPhone without uploading anything. It will also stream movies, but I've found that to be VERY slow or impossible thus far using 3G in NYC...although I did it late last night in Princeton, NJ, where network demands are much lower.
Besides this cool stuff, the Synology Disk Station is also a RAID enabled storage device, so my files are safe and backed up always. I'm slowly migrating all my files to it so I can use any of my computers and have access to all the files. The only draw-back is that I need to be on the net, but these days, you can get online most anywhere.

Interesting, but how is this functionality different than using Orb Live with an existing PC other than buying a network HD? I don't sync at all to access movies, music, photos, files, watch live tv, webcams, etc... for $9.99

I think mine just crapped out.
It was working fine a minute ago and now it won't turn on
Yesterday is started vibrating on it's own like it was switching back and forth from vibrate to ring, but that stopped.

I have no clue. I haven't used/heard of Orb Live, so I can't comment.I was in the market for a NAS, and this one did all sorts of things that other NAS drives that I researched couldn't do, and got good reviews. I guess if you're not in the market for a NAS, it's overkill given your solution, but it's nice for me.

I owned 2 Verizon Authorized retail stores ~3 years ago.It all depends on what you want.If you want 100% reliability and the best network, Verizon.If you want an iPhone and are willing to sacrifice some reliability, go for it.Would I have AT&T if Verizon had the iPhone too, or just to get another basic cell phone? No way. The iPhone was the ONLY reason I switched.That said, I doubt you'll have luck negotiating anything with regards to an iPhone. They know they've got the power when you come in and ask for an iPhone. Make sure if you plan on keeping your number that your Verizon contract is up (as in month-to-month), but not cancelled . Once you cancel, your number is gone.

I'm a little out of the industry now, but I would bet big money that this does NOT happen. 1) AT&T uses GSM/3G technology, Verizon uses CDMA/EVDO technology...completely different, right down to the method of activation. AT&T has Sim Cards, Verizon has ESN's...that said, it'd be a major feat for Apple to design a CDMA phone. 2) Verizon tests, tests, and retests new phones. The reason why Verizon gets many "cool" phones later than other carriers is because they test the crap out of phones. The RAZR was in testing with Verizon for at least 2x as long as then Cingular tested it for. They want to make sure that new equipment works flawlessly and will not cause issues that might affect the entire system. Even IF they were to get a designed CDMA iPhone in the next 6 months, you'd be looking at a year of testing IMO.
3) AT&T currently cannot keep up with the data demands in major metro areas. I work in Manhattan, and I can say that in the mornings, lunch, and evenings, I can barely get any data out of my iPhone. MAJOR capacity issues. iPhones make up something like 1/10th of AT&T's phones, and over 1/2 of their network usage due to the data. Verizon would never tolerate that kind of usage, and at least when I left the business, they were not in a position to upgrade substantially because the EVDO runs on the old PCS spectrum (think 1st generation Sprint PCS digital phones). Verizon has been buying up spectrum at FCC auctions, but they can't buy it fast enough these days, even without the iPhone.
So...for those reasons, I don't think you'll see a Verizon iPhone in the next year. I'm not even sure how long Apple's deal with AT&T is, but that might play a role as well.
As for not using the iPhone much for the phone...let's just say I have 450 anytime minutes. Last month I rolled over 428 of those. I almost NEVER talk on my cell, and if I do, it's usually 1 minute calls to the girlfriend asking her to pick me up at the train station. However, I burn through data like candy on the train, especially once I get out of Manhattan and I can get faster throughput.

I think it's fairly obvious the technology among cell phone providers is different, but that does not mean a company like Verizon would be swayed from having interest in the iPhone and claiming part of the market share AT&T is currently enjoying. There is even talk out there as to a pre-paid iPhone plan. I just saw an article today discussing an Apple and Verizon deal. There are several more out there. From what I have read, it can go two ways:
1. Apple wants more of the market share and will sign with Verizon after their exclusivity with AT&T expires next year.
2. Apple is using Verizon as a means of getting more from AT&T to keep them exclusive and Verizon will remain SOL.
Either way, it's feasible that Verizon could carry the iPhone. Consider as well that Verizon is boasting it's large 3G network and 4G network in the works so I don't think they will have a problem with potential drives of former AT&T customers coming over.
As far as service goes, I would like to get what I pay for. Since AT&T does not allow folks to just buy a data plan, I have minutes as well. I am unable to use these minutes from time to time as a result of dropped calls. So AT&T is interfering with my phone use regardless of what phone I have. I never recall having any issues whatsoever with Verizon phone service and expect more from a company that claims "more bars, more places".
I think if Verizon wants the iPhone enough and AT&T doesn't give Apple what they want, it will happen.

I'm not discounting the fact that Verizon may someday have the iPhone. I think that given the immense popularity of it, any cellular company would be dumb to NOT try and have it in its phone line-up. What I'm disputing is the possibility of it going from myth to the consumer's hands in ~1 year, which is the timeframe you mentioned. IMO, Verizon would have to do way more testing and capacity upgrades than 1 year would allow.Also, the whole 3G/4G thing will undoubtedly attract customers, simply because the constantly increasing number of "G's" is such a huge, albeit misleading, marketing ploy, but the capacity is not there to support the data demands of iPhone users were they to suddenly migrate to VZW's network. The iPhone's data usage far exceed those of any other phone user, including Blackberry users. Only the iPhone can easily stream video, audio, etc. to the average user. Not saying others can't but the iPhone does it by the bucket load.
You are 100% right in your point 1 and 2 above. If Apple has half a brain, they'll use the potential of a Verizon iPhone as MAJOR marketing leverage with AT&T, and they stand to win big there, regardless of whether it's a Verizon iPhone or a lucrative extention of the AT&T exclusivity...but again, I don't see any of this helping you out in October 2010.

I am not assuming something will automatically happen by October 2010, but I am not going to upgrade to another iPhone right away either. I want to see what happens. Hopefully there will be some conversation regarding which way Apple will/can go. I just think competition among companies for a terrific product like the iPhone can only be better for consumers and will improve cell networks overall.

Just replaced my case after a year of honored service. I just bought the Otter Box Defender case. If you're like me and tend to drop this phone more than you probably should, this is the case for you. Comes in pink for the ladies too. I also recommend the Speck Tough Skin. This is what I had before and bought a spare. Works great too. The Otter Box is beefier and comes with a protective lens whereas the Tough Skin does not.

For sale, I have jailbroken 3g 8gb iPhone with the 3.1 update via iTunes. The baseband is 05.11.07, which means only AT&T users can use this phone. It is jailbroken. I can't use it anymore because I have T-mobile. I still want an iPhone though. If you have one that doesn't have the 3.1 update,

I'll second that. Apple employees know the Apple iPhone. AT&T employees know AT&T plans (even that's a stretch). And I think if anything goes wrong with your new iPhone, you can take it back to the Apple Store with usually no problems. If you get it from the AT&T store, I foresee there being some problems. I know this thread is super long, but I asked the same question back in post# 2734. I wasn't sure either about where to buy. I eventually ended up buying it from the Apple Store. I then went to an AT&T store to get my employer's discount applied to my account.HellToupee said:

@Helltoupee: While I think the future lies in GSM (until something better comes along), I don't see Verizon upgrading from CDMA to GSM...they would have to run parallel networks for years to support all the old phones that currently run CDMA only, and I don't see them having the funds or bandwidth for that. Not to mention, I don't think it'd be a smart business move to jump onto GSM mid-technology when their primary competitor has had their hand in it since near the start. They'd be better off waiting for some new technology if it ever comes, some long-range WiFi or something (over my tech head here)

I did read multiple places that once you go to 3.1 software there is no going back to 3.0, AND there is no longer the ability to unlock the phone for use on other networks, jailbreak or not. 3.1 somehow closes that backdoor. I'm guessing that's what the poster is getting at. Obviously jailbreaking is not the same as unlocking, although they are often done in the same process.

Jailbreak 3.1 for Mac is out (Pwnage) and there is one for Windows, but it's new and I am waiting to upgrade until green p0ison or redsn0w gets a product out. I suspect the issue for that Craigslist seller is that he/she updated the baseband as well making it useless on other carriers like T Mobile. I have not updated myself as I am waiting for the jailbreak (a well tested, proven version). I thought the baseband update was separate to that of the OS update. I think it is possible to revert the baseband of an updated iPhone as well as the OS, but I have no experience doing so. I cannot wait until the 3.1 jailbreak is out (a well tested, proven version). Anyone doing the MMS thing out there? From what I've read online, you can't revert baseband or OS on iPhones...of course these days with the iPhone something's impossible until someone figures it out.I haven't upgraded to 3.1 because I have a jailbroken 3GS with 3.0.1 and honestly it works fine for me. I did an MMS hack for 3.0.1 that worked fine, so I have that now as well. People are just so quick to do those updates (especially the jailbreak crowd) and then they're like WTF? Where is the jailbreak update? People don't just snap their fingers and create these wonderful things. A lot of folks sitting around going through code, testing, re-testing, and packaging these jailbreaks. I don't think they get enough credit a lot of the time. So here's to them

FYI: New jailbreak out called Blackra1n for 3.1.2. In the process of installing it. DO NOT USE THIS IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON UNLOCKING YOUR iPHONE. This is only a jailbreak. Here is the link to the tutorial. I will let you all know how it goes.
ETA: Success! Just make sure to close all iTunes apps in Task Manager (Windows) like the iTunes Helper. Once that is done, it works fine. Also reinstalled aptbackup right away and hit restore. Worked perfectly. Retrieved all my apps from Cydia no problem and set them up in Winterboard.

What are some apps that you can use only on a jailbroken phone? Not sure I want to mess with it, I've been very happy with what I have.
