The Apple iPhone Thread (8 Viewers)

Anybody else use multiple iPhones on the same computer? I connected my wife's iPhone yesterday after it was activated at the AT&T store and it prompted me for a identifying name, which I expected. But then it proceeded to automatically download all of MY apps to her phone. Apparently her phone will use my itunes account. I would have expected to have to have a separate itunes account for each phone but apparently not. We will only pay once but will get to use apps on both phones.

I plugged mine in afterward just to make sure it was still recognized and has my name attached. It did.

When she browsed to the itunes store this morning, by default it showed my itunes account on her phone.

Just wondering if this is normal. I feel like I'm getting over on the man.

That's the way it works. One iphone per computer/itunes. And you're really not getting over on anyone, your wife wont be able to keep her own apps and personalizations on her phone.

I thought it was clear that we are sharing the same itunes account. Our iPhones are identified differently on the Mac Powerbook as far the the identifier name but we are using the same itunes account. No big deal really, I was just surprised it worked that way.

This is incorrect. My wife and I each have our own iPhone profiles on one computer and one iTunes. As soon as your wife sets up her phone and syncs, it will save the settings. If you want you can even share iTunes accounts. This is nice because if want to D/L an app like Slingplayer, you only have to buy it once.

Way to be a tool.Just set up your accounts to manually sync and then check off only what you want to sync

Ordered iPhone 4. Will be selling the 3Gs as soon as I can jailbreak the new baseband and unlock 4.0.1. Should be a week away or so.

Thanks. That's the way it's working for us. I was just wondering if it was normal behavior, and it appears to be.

Unlock/JB has been released. Good luck getting through the server though.

Been doing this with Orb Live for 2 years. Can also access all music and watch TV (all cable box functionality) whenever. I forgot to include webcams and file transfers as well. Big fan. Cost is free to be used solely on other PCs, but the iPhone app was/is $9.99
You having problem with Orb over 3G now? Seems a lot of people are. Very annoying.
Not really. Obviously wifi is better, but I have the quality turned down slightly (not too noticable) and works great. Been very happy with it.
OK, thanks. Over 3G I get about 5-10 seconds of video and then the quality goes to brutal.
I would definitely recommend moving the "streams optimized for" (I had to look it up) slider to the middle of 3G or so. Seems fine to me. I watch TV all the time on it and stream a lot of music. Movies not so much.
To what extent does this eat up your data plan limits? Say, for example, that I wanted to listen to music while I was at work for 8 hours, streaming off my home computer. What does that cost me?

I dunno how that would compare to just streaming pandora or something. Do you have a feel for the data rate?

Wait, you're saying I/we can back up two different iPhones on the same computer?? After trying it with no success, and talking to an Apple rep, I was told I could only setup one iPhone per itunes on a computer. I got some bad info, my bad. How does it handle contacts? We can save/sync two different sets of contacts and everything else?

I'm not in any rush.
Don't be. Jailbreak is a bit buggy.Reports of losing MMS and Facetime, although neither are serious issues for me.
I'm not going to jailbreak my new 4, I'm only going to do this to my present 3Gs so it has higher resale value.

So, my son was eating my phone (original) and now it wont hold a charge

1. I have not backed it up in 6 or 7 months. Will I lose paid apps

2. Should I get the 3Gs or 4. I have not had the time to keep up with problems that the 4 has

So I ordered an ivyskin before apple announced they were going to give people free cases and it's still not here.

I believe if you try and re-buy them it will tell you that you've already purchased them and will download it for free. How long ago did your son 'eat' it? Let it dry out and try again, might just need some time.

Updated my wife's 3G to iOS4, and now it is super slow, and third party apps don't load. Anyone experience this? What's the fix?

Plug it in, and r-click on the phone in itunes and click transfer purchases. Should work.

Anyone try that Jailbreak Me site yet? Im hesitant to do it.
Yeah, it worked like a charm for me and my wife.I did, later on, end up bricking my wife's iphone 4g, but that wasn't due to the jailbreak, was due to other crap I was doing on it. But, after a couple internet searches, I figured out how to put it in DFU mode, which allowed me to connect it to itunes and restore the original firmware. At this point I just restored from backup, and loaded her music and apps back on by syncing, and it was like nothing had happened. Then I jailbroke it again, and was more careful installing what I wanted on it, and it works like a charm now.So, even at worst case, even if you brick the phone, you can still restore it.BUT, whatever you do, SYNC and BACKUP your phone before jailbreaking. Should be mandatory.

I think his problem is that it won't hold a charge ie: isn't read by the computer when it's plugged in.

I had the same issue with my 3g. When I click on the mms icon it will take 5-10 seconds for my texts to appear. I restored mine, which seemed to help a little, but its still slower, imo.

Same here. They said it was sent on July 19th and I have a USPS delivery confirmation number but there hasn't been any updates.
Yeah. I'm going to contest the charges. I think it's a scam. They responded to a few emails and then quit.
As of 7/29/10, BBB has received 25 complaints regarding delivery of products ordered by consumers; most involve the iPhone 4 reception case. These complaints are currently pending as BBB is waiting for the company's response.

Just checked it and noticed that there was an update made yesterday from the USPS, it's in a USPS sort facility in NJ so it appears that it has finally left the warehouse. Not sure why it took two weeks to do that after they said they shipped it, but it should arrive by the end of the week.

Worked like a charm. I also unlocked it with ultrasn0w 0.93.
The fact you can go to a web site and jail break an iPhone is scary. They are breaking out of the sandbox and turning off code signing via the browser which is really cool. I'm thinking they would also have to get root access also. I think the guy running the site is one of the best iPhone hackers out there but I still would not use the site. In fact until Apple patches the exploit I would be wary of any site that I did not trust 100%.

They do suggest changing the root password immediately afterward. ;)

My iPhone doesn't appear in my iTunes window on my Macbook. It does appear on my dell.

Anyone have any suggestions?

What version iTunes do you have on macbook? Could be an issue with a new iphone not being compatible with old iTunes, but it should tell you that if it's the case.

Well, if you use it or don't, the exploit is still there. But if you use it, you can install OpenSSH and change your root password, although I'm not totally sure that'll prevent others from exploiting the same bug. It'll certainly prevent OpenSSH attacks, or seriously reduce the likelihood of them occurring, but I'd be interested to see someone saying that jailbreaking and then changing your root password could prevent the same exploit being used to give others access to your phone.

You'll be able to re-download all your apps, just remember which ones you need to DL.

same here. shipped over 2 weeks ago via USPS. I sent them an email asking what was up on Monday and haven't gotten a response yet.

Got my iPhone 4 yesterday. Did the free case app, they all said 2-4 weeks for delivery. Ordered the Incase snap because I really liked my Incase Slider/Power Support screen protector set up on my 3GS.

But the new Power Support crystal covers aren't in stores yet, so I ordered a pack online and the Incase Slider just came out so that's going to be a week or two.

In the meantime, bought a Griffen slim case and iFrogz anti-glare screen protector. Will return them both once I can get my preferred setup.

You bought product A to use until product B becomes available, and once you get product B you're going to return product A for a refund?

The ZAGG invisibleSHIELD is really annoying. It sticks like glue to glass and plastic surfaces/objects. I have had two replaced thus far and the third one started to peel near the camera last night.

That's what he said.

I couldn't get jailbreakme to work on my 3G until I realized that I had too many apps installed, so Cydia wasn't showing up because Apple only allows only so many pages. I deleted one app, did the jailbreakme thing again, and it worked.

Good thing about 4.0 is that with the folders + Iconoclasm (Cydia app), you can have pretty much have as many apps as your hard drive will allow you.

So I'm showing my wife the new phone and pointing out the new features compared to the 3GS (2 cameras, flash/light, higher MP camera, HD video, thinner, etc.) and she's barely interested until she notices the back:

Her: "Ooooo! Check that out! It has a mirror on the back!"

Me: "Well, it's not really a mirror, they just made the back in this scratch resistance metal instead of the plastic."

Her: "But I would totally use that all the time as a mirror, that's a nice size. This phone is awesome!"

Neat tips and tricks I've found poking around the web:

Turn on character counts in text messaging.

To keep track of text message character counts, go to Settings -> Messages -> Character Count, and flip the switch to "on." When you type a text message, you'll see a character count. The character count started when I got to 30 characters in a quick test.

Make notes, text messages, and address book entries easier to read by making the font bigger.

Change the font in Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Large Text.

The Accessibility controls have a couple of tricks for everybody, not just disabled people. For example, you can zoom the screen, set mono audio for occasions when you're using only one earbud, and VoiceOver reads your e-mail, texts and e-books to you.

Search Wikipedia and Google using Spotlight.

To get to the Spotlight screen, swipe right from the home screen. From there, type to search the contents of your phone. Scroll down to the bottom of the results to see entries for searching Google and Wikipedia.

Set Bing as your default search engine.

Go to Settings -> Safari -> Search Engine and set your default search engine. Choose between Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Bing is new.

Scroll to the top fast.

In Safari, Mail, Contacts, and many other apps, tap the status bar at the top of the screen — which displays the carrier information, time, and battery level — to scroll quickly to the top.

Lock the screen orientation.

Double-click the Home button to bring up the multitasking interface, then swipe from left to right. Now tap the portrait orientation lock once to turn it on and again to turn it off.

Learn some keyboard tricks.

Tap the space bar twice, and iPhone adds a period and capitalizes the next word.

To enter a number or symbol quickly, touch and hold , then select the key you want. Lifting your finger returns you to the alphabet keyboard.

Touch and hold a letter to reveal a list of special characters.

Scrub through audio and video (Change the speed of the scrub).

When you’re watching a video or listening to music or a podcast, the scrubber bar lets you skip to any point along the timeline. You can adjust the scrub rate from high-speed to fine scrubbing by sliding your finger down as you drag the playhead along the scrubber bar.

Place a call on hold.

On iPhone 4, touch and hold the Mute button to place a call on hold.

Put More Apps in the Dock

The iPhone has always been limited to only 4 Apps in the dock at once. The iPad takes it up to 6. However, now with iOS 4 and folders you could theoretically have up to 48 Apps in the dock for quick access. Granted I don't need 48, but I do need more than 4. So what I did was create a "Productivity" folder and I put it in the dock so that those 12 Apps are accessible to me no matter which Home screen I'm on.

Watch live TV on your iPhone

Not an iOS 4 tip per se, but you can turn your iPhone into TV thanks to the mobile version of the great TVCatchup website. You need to register, but the service is completely free, and even works over 3G as well as Wi-Fi.
