The Apple iPhone Thread (2 Viewers)

My cellphone will be 6 years old this coming December. I'm considering getting an iPhone, but I have a few questions:

1. If I get an iPhone, will I have to upgrade it twice a year to be happy? my gf has had her 3gS for a year and a half i think. she still loves it.

Muchas gracias for su buena onda y por su gran ayuda.
good luck with the rest, i think i pay $140/m for 2 phones 600+ minutes on ATT.

Anyone sell an iPhone through gazelle.com? I have a 3G that I have absolutely no need for at all and am thinking about selling it. Gazelle claims they will give me ~$53 for it. If nobody has done it, I will volunteer to be a test subject. :bye:
 My buddy put his Iphone 2G on CL and got $150 for it. Then again, everything's connected so anything goes wrong it's about $100 to replace anything unlike 3G where there's more separate parts.

Has anybody downloaded iOS 5.1 yet?

The camera icon on the lock screen is cool. You just flick upwards while touching it and your camera is open. One issue, however, is that after you take the picture, if you tap the cameraroll iconin th elower left corner, while the picture comes up, you do not have the option to send it. Rather, you have to hit the home button, then tap photos on your screen, then select the photo, and then you can send it. Why can't you send it from the camera shortcut to your photos? Weird and clumsy.

jailbreak+snappy has had this feature for what, 3 years now? And implemented flawlessly.

I haven't updated but this is how mine works with OS5. If I take a picture after going to the camera from the lock screen then the photo can't be sent right away. I have to navigate back home >> photos.

Despite the fact that iPhone 4S was only released last week, sources say Apple is already well along in its plans for the development and release of iPhone 5. Some believe that it was the iPhone 5, not the iPhone 4S, that co-founder and former Apple CEO Steve Jobs worked on prior to his death last week.Rumor has it that Apple’s iPhone 5 will be released in mid-2012. What’s more, it is believed that the iPhone 5 will be equipped with the largest screen in iPhone history as well as a thinner profile. Other sources say it will have LTE (Long Term Evolution), or 4G.An unnamed industry analyst believes the release of the iPhone 5 will outshine the iPhone 4S in terms of pre-orders and launch day sales.“The iPhone 5 is a ‘complete redesign. This is a very large project that Steve dedicated all of his time to. He was not that involved in the 4S because his time was limited’,” says CNET’s Brooke Crothers.

Get your AAPL stock now folks. A redesign with a bigger screen will make 4S sales look like a lemonade stand.

My cellphone will be 6 years old this coming December. I'm considering getting an iPhone, but I have a few questions:1. If I get an iPhone, will I have to upgrade it twice a year to be happy?2. Which provider has the best coverage, AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint? I live very near El Paso, Tejas. ¡Órale!3. Which provider is the most reasonable for a single account, moderate use?4. I talked to AT&T about a year ago, they offered a 15% discount on my monthly charge because I am a teacher. Is that still in place? Do other carriers offer the same or better discount?5. How much a month am I looking at? Currently I get 600 minutes/month plus free from 9pm-7pm and free weekends.6. What does the iPhone offer that an android doesn't?Muchas gracias for su buena onda y por su gran ayuda.
If your last phone lasted you 6 years then I'm pretty sure your next phone will last you at least the term of an upgrade contract (2 years). You'll be blown away by what phones can do nowadays. Not sure on coverage in your area. ATT can be a bit frustrating with dropped calls in some areas. iPhone vs Android is like saying coke vs pepsi. Both are very good systems on very good hardware. If you're an iTunes user or have other apple products, they tend to work very well together and it's beneficial to stick with that ecosystem. If you are starting from scratch it really comes down to preference. The android fan base trends more toward people who are gadget/technophiles who like to tinker with their phones and have the knowledge to do so (and to fix it if something messes up as a result). Apple users trend toward people who want an easy to use but equally powerful device that "just works". There is a lot of grey area inbetween and some crossover but that is a VERY broad profile. I'd highly suggest you head to the store and play with both. I'd ignore anything the salesperson tells one one way or the other with regards to preferences as they are usually HIGHLY biased toward one platform or another, or are motivated by a sales bonus. I'd just use them both, ask questions here, and then make your decision.

After downloading IOS 5.1, the Mrs. Iphone 4s is showing 4G on her home screen. Is it legit?
No, AT&T has taken to calling their faster HSPA+ network 4G.
Owners of AT&T's iPhone 4S are a bit confused with the 4G cell signal icon now appearing on their devices after they updated to the new iOS 5.1.While the AT&T iPhone 4S model runs on the wireless carrier's HSPA+ network, a slightly faster version than 3G, it is not receiving 4G or 4G LTE speeds which are 10 times faster than 3G.The iPhone 4S does not have the chipset required to access a 4G network. It will run at the same speed before the iOS 5.1 update. However, AT&T spokeswoman Kelly Starling said "iPhone 4S customers have been getting 4G since day one."AT&T's company response: "Apple has updated its iOS software to show a 4G network indicator when customers are on AT&T’s 4G network.  Only AT&T’s network lets iPhone 4S download 3 times faster, and only AT&T customers have access to the nation’s largest 4G network covering nearly 250M people."Cruise Deal - Go to the Caribbean for as little as $299Confusing? Yes.While some are calling AT&T and Apple dishonest and manipulative, part of the problem is that the definition of cell signals, known as 2G, 3G, and 4G, is a bit fuzzy.A 2010 decision by the International Telecommunications Union, an agency of the United Nations that establishes worldwide telecom standards, shows that 4G is an "undefined term" that can be applied to LTE and "evolved 3G technologies."AT&T andT-Mobile rebranded their HSPA+ networks as 4G.LTE, which is a true 4G technology, is marketed as 4G LTE.The new iPad, announced earlier this week, will run on 4G LTE

Have any of you had repeated issues with the iPhone4's home button? Several months ago, my home button began taking a number of repeated pressings to work. Apple replaced the phone. Now, my "new" iPhone4 is starting to do the same damn thing.

I have this problem with my iPod Touch at times.

I have it with my iPad
You can use the five-finger-pinch for the iPad at least.
There are gestures in ios5 that you can enable. I'm so used to activator that I haven't researched it much, but I've seen people with a stock ios gesture system on iphone just like the ipad one now.

Every time I read a Culdeus post, besides having no idea what he is saying, reminds me that I am probably only using 10% of the iphone/ipad capabilities

Some FoxConn recruiter has stated that the iPhone 5 is due to for a June launch due to some staffing moves apple is making. (hiring and such).

Take it with a grain of salt as with all Apple rumors.

Saw that, but I'm not buying it.I pray that the 4.6" screen rumors are true. Small screen size is the biggest flaw current iPhones have.

It's a catch-22. The iPhone, IMO is the perfect size right now as far as fitting in your pocket. It's a little small for my hands and the screen is a little small as well, but if they go bigger screen, what will the rest of the proportions turn into? Will there need to be a bigger battery making it thicker as well? If they kept the dimensions nearly identical, and just eliminated the home button or put it on the side and extended the screen almost the full length of the device, I would love it.

The bigger phones fit into pockets easily as well. Virtually all of the new flagship smart phones have moved to larger screens; the trade-off (slightly bigger device for a slightly bigger screen size) is definitely worth it, IMO.

Can anyone suggest a good source for jaibreaking a 4S?
Jailbreaknation.com is a good place to start.
Thanks. Can anyone vouch for the stability of the Absinthe jailbreak?
Ive had it on my phone and iPad for about 2 months now. Works fine.
Same. Solid jailbreak.
Ok, I downloaded Absinthe 0.4 to my MBP, opened it, connected my Verizon iPhone 4S, and it says, "Sorry, the attached device is not supported". So what gives?

Just was reading on this. I'm on 5.1 and apparently it only works with 5.01. :kicksrock:

Yup. You can roll back iOS if you want to use it.

Any word on how far away they are on a jailbreak for 5.1?

You are going to have to find a custom IPSW out there on a torrent site and have it bootloaded using something like redsnow. To me this is the single riskiest thing you can do. These custom IPSW could have literally ANYTHING in them, and nobody really can check it. I certainly realize running some of the tweaks could as well, but if you stick to the ones vetted by modmyi and other sites then I usually feel safe. Just chill and wait for the 5.1 J/B. There is already an tethered one for the 4.What I want to know is why everyone feels obligated to upgrade their OS at all. The 5.1 upgrade was basically designed to do nothing but close jailbreak loops and the rest of the small apple tweaks they threw in have been mimicked on cydia already.

Here is a link to one of the many flavors out there: My link. As a general rule of thumb, don't upgrade your iOS before you know for sure that a suitable jailbreak is available.ETA: Or do as Culdeus said and just wait until an untethered 5.1 jailbreak comes out, which should be soon.

I think the newer phones are too big.
I'm with you. I like that I can reach the entire screen with my thumb while holding it in one hand (without doing any major contorting or using some crazy grip that might cause me to drop it). There are differing opinions on this but the fact that the iPhone is still the best selling phone by a large...large margin seems to indicate that the size isn't too much of a concern. Not saying apple won't look into a bigger screen, but I don't see it coming in the form of a much bigger device. I could see them reducing the bezel a bit, but honestly any screen shift is going to cause issues with screen resolutions. Apple is big on fixed pixel sizes on their products for maximum image quality. I don't see them simply adjusting the size by a few hundred pixels in either direction.

What do you mean by this? There was certainly a shift from ipad2 to 3 which would suggest something else. Really they have never released a device to my knowledge with a scaled dpi, right?

Pretty sure my iOS updates automatically, so I really never gave it any thought.

Which one do you have?
IPhone 4
I can only tell you that the fact that every other smart phone in the world believes the "sweet spot" between screen size and keeping the phone small enough to fit in your pocket and use with 1 hand is in the 4"+ range. Apple is a great innovator, but they don't lead on everything, and screen size is probably the biggest feature that they're running behind on. If consumers truly preferred 3.5" screens, all of the screens on the new Androids coming out every month would be hovering in that range. I'll bet you a 6 pack of a good IPA that when the iPhone goes to 4"+, you'll love the new screen real estate, and you won't mind the added size at all.

You're probably right, as long as they do not go overboard I can see it working and functioning properly. I really was thinking the other day how seemingly perfect Apple got the smartphone and how the size and form factor really does still lead the samsungs etc.

I could easily present similar anecdotal evidence saying that since the iPhone is the best selling smartphone in the world it proves that it's 3.5" screen is preferred by users. The reality of the situation is that manufacturers are producing the larger screen sizes simply because it is an easy differentiator from the iPhone. Marketing 101: bigger=better.

oof. You're ignoring the fact that iPhone users don't have choices with regard to screen size. On platforms in which there are lots of choices, the larger screen size designs are clearly the choice of consumers.C'mon goon, you're smarter than this.
