The Apple iPhone Thread (1 Viewer)

Seeing a lot of people complaining about issues with their phone and info due to the update.
 I updated a iphone 5 and 3rd Gen iPad with no problems.I do have everything backed up, but have never tried a restore to verify that it actually works though.
The restore out of DFU mode is the best way to get a clean OS on your system.
Sometimes I think you speak a different language. Especially in that jailbreak thread

So there was some new IOs update for my iPhone 5 so I clicked it and it started downloading wirelessly. After it was done downloading it went to this screen that said it needed to be plugged into iTunes. So I plug it in and it says it has to be restored to original settings. I can't do anything, phone won't get off that plug into iTunes screen and iTunes isn't giving me any other options. We have a newborn and the wife was at the store and he needs to be fed...so I have no other way to reach her so I hit the factory reset iTunes is asking for. I lost all my data, pics, messages...everything. iTunes put a bunch of apps back on and my contacts are still there for some reason but I'm missing a lot of stuff I'd like to have.I call apple support and they tried to get me to buy some tech package for $250. Bull####, this is their update. Any way I can reverse this and get my stuff back? Any help at all is appreciated.
did you back it up bf you updated?Do you back up to the cloud
No backup, no cloud. App Store remembers everything I've downloaded so at least I got that back quick. I'm ####ed on data, pics, etc though, right?
Mine did the same thing tonight. Only thing is I DID do the backup. Everything was put back on the phone except photos and videos... Any help?ETA: When I go back to redo the restore, it asks me for a password to unlock my backup, only I never set a password. I have tried everything I could think of. No luck. I reboooted the phone to initiate the restore the first time. Only not everything came back...
Try to restore again, but instead of a clean restore restore from your most recent backup. It is a dropdown in itunes. That solves this issue about half the time. If that doesn't solve it you are ####ed. You are lucky that evasi0n is about due to drop, you can get some of the filer system stuff from there. In fact, I'd wait to load evasi0n and use the jailbreak apps to look for your old stuff first. It may still be on your phone, but just not able to be seen, then restore your oldest backup and see if it comes in that way.edit: iFile is still the best file system app on cydia for this purpose. There are some ones you don't need evasi0n for, but i couldn't make those work on my SIL's phone.

So, I had a message pop up on my iPod to upgrade to the latest OS and it warned me to back it up making mention that I downloaded apps to my iPod that weren't on my desktop. I ignored the message and just upgraded and it went fine, but now I'm trying to figure out where on this crappy iTunes app do I go to get the apps I downloaded to my phone onto my desktop. They were all time waster games...nothing I paid for so it doesn't really matter. I'd just like to know how to do it. The one app I DID buy shows up, but none of the free ones do.

I haven't used the desktop iTunes in a while, but what you're looking for while having your phone plugged in to the computer says something like "transfer purchases from iPhone to computer"

That's grayed out....as is the sync. I'm beginning to wonder if it only cares about the apps you spent money for?? I have a few time waster kinds of games for my son (Angry Birds, etc) but I purchased Spotify....spotify shows up...the others don't

Is your phone plugged in? Mine was accessible when it was plugged in, grayed out when it was unplugged from the computerI think, but don't know, that it treats all app downloads as "purchases"

It does not have to be plugged into the computer to charge, but yes, if it is plugged into the computer then it should be able to transfer purchases - unless you have already done that or have nothing on the phone that is not already on the computer.

I don't buy the $40 dongles that Apple sells. I have the one that came with it...it plugs into my computer to charge. I don't have one for a wall outlet. While screwing with this thing iTunes has frozen on me three different times. :wall:

Why apple allows people to do this is insanity.
Apparently so they can sell more apple care subscriptions. Crooks.
Yes, it's Apple fault that you don't back up your data. :lmao:
I bought an apple phone because of the ease of use because I don't want to spend the time and effort to get really fancy with it. I'm not interested in in plugging my phone into my computer constantly and I don't want to pay for cloud storage or whatever. forgive me for assuming that if it wants me to update something it's not going to wipe my phone clean without flashing red lights letting me know it's going to do so. seems like a pretty novel idea to me. I get that it was my mistake and I rushed it because I had to make a call and it's my only phone, but a simple warning would be nice.

Never update your phone without a full backup by usb.Why apple allows people to do this is insanity. Nobody should be updating firmware anyways unless there is a serious issue or an untethered jailbreak released on the new version.Apple hasn't done a meaningful update to a firmware in years that added a feature worth upgrading for.
I did do a full backup by USB and I still had this problem. When I went to do a restore from my backup, it didn't work. After I calmed down, I realized it was a partial restore, and was able to go thru the list of apps and iTunes still recognized which ones should have been on my phone, it just wouldn't install them. I then clicked on the apps I wanted to keep and double-clicked on those to get rid of. (or something like that.)The important thing is to make sure your photos are on the icloud function that allows them to be sent back to your computer when you take them, the same for your contacts and such. That way when things like this happen, replacing apps is all you have to do. NBD.

Yes, you are correct, but is it Apple's fault when you DO backup your data and the upgrade screws up?!?

Gotta say I loved my IPhone 4S because it was uber stable. Now it has little hangings 3-5 times a day and crashes every other day.... Ever since iOS 6 update. Even updating to 6.1 (no data loss thankfully) has done little to help. It even added a hangup that's started occurring in texting app.

Sure.

I hate cases, but I might actually need one. This iphone 5 is almost too light and thin for my hands. It also is rather slippery enough that it falls from my couch fairly often and from other areas while at rest. The size/weight issue and the slipperiness has also caused me to drop this thing more than my last two iphones combined over their entire lifespans. Those wallet cases look interesting, but are the bulky? Do they protect well?

I'm sure it's been done, but whats the best case for the 5?
I picked up this case on sale for $20 on Amazon. http://www.incipio.com/cases/iphone-cases/iphone-5-cases/iphone-5-stashback-credit-card-hard-shell-case.html I no longer carry a wallet.
I got this wallet case a couple months ago and LOVE going wallet-free! It fits my DL, a credit card, debit/ATM card and 2 folded $20 bills.
I've been waiting on this wallet case for months. They posted on facebook that preorders should ship this week. Hope it's worth the wait.

I bought AppleCare+ and am going case-free with the iPhone 5. I put it in this when I leave the house.

This way I am able to enjoy the phone as it was went to be used. I am also protected with AppleCare+ if it should drop into the toilet, the screen breaks, I run it over with the car, etc.

Thus far I am only finding wallet cases with 3 card slots. Ideally I'd like one that allows me to carry my ID, personal CC, business CC, and ATM card along with some cash. Not really finding anything like that though.

Here you go...
I know, 4 pieces of plastic and a few pieces of paper is a lot to carry.
j/k GB... I won't get a wallet case for my phone. Need room for CC, DL, insurance cards, etc. My phone would look like one of those old 90's phones.

My wallet case is about the same thickness as my iPhone4 was in an Encase Slider, so it's what I was always used to and I've gained an empty pants pocket.

What can you fit in it? Can you squeeze more than 3 cards?

No prob. Yea, I'm wondering whether it gets too bulky and what do I do with AAA card (leave in car I guess?) and insurance card (only needed when seeing Dr. though). Just grab wallet or specific cards when needed I guess.

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of going wallet-free. My case fits three cards easily and it feels like I could perhaps fit a $20 in there as well, but I've always carried cash in my front pocket. I have no cash now, or I'd give it a try. One thing I do like about my Incipio case (linked above) is that the cards are completely hidden and you'd never know that it was a wallet case unless you opened it.

Any recommends on a wireless speaker? I just need something that stays in my locker while I shower. So wireless (battery or rechargeable I guess) is what I need. Basic search looks like a mini-speaker that plugs in via the headphone jack.

Something like this I guess?

Get it factory unlocked.
have you done this?
Yes. On 2 AT&T iphone4's. If your contract is up on that phone, AT&T will do it for free.My linkAfter they approve the unlock, they'll send you instructions on how to unlock through iTunes. It's a piece of cake and ups the value of your phone.
