The Apple iPhone Thread (2 Viewers)

is there a way on iphone 5 to default to the iphone maps instead of that crappy google maps app
Uhm... pretty sure there's no way for Google Maps to be your default (without an app anyway). Do you mean you'd like to make Google Maps your default?

I updated my IPhone on Friday and now all my text messages go to my IPad and not my phone. I was out yesterday and did not get any text messages on my phone. When I got home I had 20 texts on my Ipad. Anyone know how to reverse this?
I don't think it's a matter of either/or... pretty sure your "text" messages sent to your iPad are iMessages, not true SMS. In other words, they are being sent to your Apple ID.On your iPhone, you'll want to accept both texts (SMS) and iMessages. Go into Settings > Messages and make sure iMessage is "ON". Then go to "Send & Receive" and make sure your Apple ID (email) is in there.
 How do I now block them from my IPad? Turn off IMessage? I get home yesterday and all these drunken texts from my buddies in Florida showing topless girls at the beech are on the front of my IPad.

:lmao:I have the same problem. Came home from a weekend away and all my exchanges were stacked up on the iPad lock screen.

sounds pretty self explanatory to me.

I'm pretty sure bing searches go to bing.com directions just like the directions results of google searches link to google maps. I don't think it would be cool if the iPhone changed the destinations of actual links on its own.But yahoo searches point to apple's maps. If it's important to you, I would change the search engine in Settings - Safari to yahoo rather than google or bing.

I've been using my iPhone 3GS and my wife has been using her iPhone 3G for quite some time now. My 3GS has been working fine. I'm running iOS 6, and haven't had any problems. My wife's 3G on the other hand has been horrible. She only has iOS 4. Her screen has started looking like an Etch-a-Sketch, she can't even hold the Wifi connection at our house. So, understandably, she's asked to upgrade to another iPhone. I want to go the iPhone 5 route, and she has said she wants to go with the free iPhone 4. But she wants Siri, so I told her to go with the 4S. We want to keep out of pocket costs down as much as possible. Well, she wants to but then she made me feel guilty about spending on the 5 vs. putting money aside for our kids' activities (birthdays, sports, martial arts classes, Six Flags season passes, etc.).

For her, is there a big difference between the 4 and 4S?

For me, is there a big difference between the 5, 4S and 4?

For both of us, would there be an activation fee since we are current AT&T customers, and would be agreeing to new 2-yr contracts?

TIA

Siri sucks. Nobody ever uses it for anything but a gimmick and the occasional car hands free thing. Don't let that be your decision point. There are some high end apps that need the 4S or 5 to talk to 3rd party external hardware. I don't know of jailbreak workarounds to these, but these are more power user things at the moment. Stuff that the 4 will choke on for example would be bluetooth polar heart rate monitors, pedometers, some gps handshake 3rd party stuff. etc. Nothing that major.Between the 4s and 5 is a minor screen size change. No other major improvements were added and they changed the adapter. Why not pay out of pocket for an unlocked 4 or 4s and use a post-paid plan. That's what I have my wife on. Saves a crap ton. There's a giant thread on this right now in the main forum.

I have a 5 and it is a lot faster then the 4 I replaced with it. That said, I can't say that it's worth the extra money and contract. In hindsight I would have been fine keeping my 4.

Speak for yourself. I use Siri all the time for setting reminders, making phone calls, sending texts and adding dates to my calendar.

If you want Siri that bad and your family or friend has a 4s or above you can proxy to it through a jailbreak to get it. I would still get a 4s for the simple reason that the battery probably has less cycles on it and the cost difference isn't that high. Talking maybe 50-70 bucks.

Best thing about the 5 is LTE. Network speed blows away previous 3G models.

I do believe At&T will charge you an activation fee. You may be able to get them to waive it. Let them know you want to stay with At&t but aren't happy about the fee.

Does Passbook actually work? Haven't really had a need to use it, so I haven't dug too deeply into it yet. Wondering about airplane tix. Going on United next week, and my tix are showing up on the United app, just not on Passbook yet. Will they show up in Passbook when the time gets closer to my departure? If so, I am traveling with my 3 kids, will I be able to do their tix on my Passbook?

TIA!!! It's stuff like this why I love FFA.

United was one of the airlines supported at launch so I would assume it would work.

I don't think you'll see your actual tickets in passbook...just the boarding passes. I haven't used it yet though, so not 100% sure on that.

Yep, they have waived the activation fee with every upgrade I've received.

How do I do this if I buy the phones at Best Buy? Do I need to buy from an AT&T store or the AT&T website? I might buy at BB because they're offering up to a $250 BB gift card when trading in an old phone, plus a $25 bonus with purchase of any iPhone and 2-yr activation.

Just call ATnT after you activate it and talk to them. Their customer service has always been good to me, just sound unhappy about the fee and they'll waive it. Doesn't matter where you buy the phone.

Hey, my FIL just signed up on my AT&T mobile share plan (my work pays mine, the main account, so not expensive for me) and we had issues getting his phone setup and it seems like they never tracked the phone purchase so he is eligible for an upgrade. They have iPhone5 refurbs for $149. I am tempted to get one and sell it, just wondering what I have to do to unlock it or since it is new, does it even matter if I just sell it as an AT&T phone? If I never activate it on my plan, does that matter? We don't need it and he doesn't use a ton of data/watch movies, so the 4S he has is plenty fine.

Just try to sell it as an AT&T phone. You'll still clear enough to make it worth it.

Thanks. Best place to sell it Ebay or are there too many potential Paypal scammers? Also, are there any issues with paying for the upgraded phone, but never activating it? I guess I could order the new one and replace mine (also iPhone 5) and then sell mine after wiping it. I read a couple articles and it seemed like there could be issues with having a never activated phone and selling it.

I have several email accounts on my iPhone4. Every couple of days, one of my accounts refuses to let me delete email. When I try to, it removes the email then posts a message something to the effect of "Unable to move to the Trash Folder." And the message comes back.

When I try to delete it on my iPad or on my iMac, no troubles.

TIA

There is sort of a funny conspiracy theory going around. Pandora's rating has been falling at an alarming rate for no real reason. They just crossed the 2 star territory today. Conspiracy theorists say this is a defined assault on their rating in advance of iradio launch soon.

Or maybe people are just sick of all roads leading to mumford and sons and matchbox 20?

I haven't been on pandora in months. I moved on to spotify simply because I can choose specific songs OR allow it to "create" a channel for me. If pandora now does that, me not knowing that should tell you how long it's been since I have used it.

I love Pandora. Use it at work all the time, only music app I pay for. I really like that it is "set it and forget it", and for me at least, it does a great job of having a good mix of music. Every once in a while I will rate the song that is playing, generally if I have a strong reaction to it) but I did that at the beginning, and it's worked since. But since I listen to it mostly at work, I don't want to spend any time picking tracks or something. I just want to click play and let it go.

Isn't Spotify a pay application for premium version? I know Spotify has a basic free version but how doe's that compare to Pandora. What do you get on the premium Spotify version?

The pay version allows you to play music even if you're not on a network and there are no commercials.. Other than that (I haven't really paid close attention) it does what pandora does PLUS allows you to look up songs and play them....even in the free version. You just have to deal with commercials on the free version.

The iOS 7 is supposed to be "flatter" and also some how make it harder for people to see your screen while looking over your shoulder or something. What does this even mean? Will the glare be lessened so I can actually use the thing outside in the sunlight?

Flat design is what Microsoft and google have been doing well for a couple years. It means the icons and such wont look like glossy metal with shadows and depth. Apps will work the same but the design will look different. There might be a little more energy efficiency but not likely anything big.

Basically, It means they will be going to a design like google and MS. To your second question, I doubt it.

Is the glare situation and outside use better on android/windows phones and tablets, or do all touch screens suffer the same fate?

Glare is not a function of GUI design. They mean eye strain just using normally.

iOS is tired and is due for an epic refresh.

The "glare" problem is generally around the glass used on the front. Doesn't have anything to do with the gui. With that said, some have less glare than others, but I think they all have some issue being out in the bright sun.

I'm still using a 3GS. Just received an email from AT&T saying I can upgrade to the 5 (16GB) for $99. I've been waiting until the 5S/6 comes out (projected to be Sept), in hopes of getting the 5 at the reduced price. Guess I'll just do it now.

I'm a week from my upgrade. I can't make up my mind what to do. Pretty sure I'm bailing on this franchise and may look back into it later. Will end a long run.

My job just upgraded my blackberry to a iPhone 5. First iPhone I have ever had. Seems nice so far
