The Apple iPhone Thread (2 Viewers)

I'm still using a 3GS. Just received an email from AT&T saying I can upgrade to the 5 (16GB) for $99. I've been waiting until the 5S/6 comes out (projected to be Sept), in hopes of getting the 5 at the reduced price. Guess I'll just do it now.
:jawdrop:
Called. $199 + $100 trade in on my 3GS = $99 phone 5!!
a full functioning 3GS is worth more than 100. They will flip that for 200 easy.

Mine is great, except a tiny crack in the back by the charging port and the mute switch doesnt work. Still >$100?

I would at least fish for buyers on craigslist. You might be surprised. Big ebay houses probably wont touch a 3gs though.

Mine is also in great condition, but I'd rather just do the trade-in and not deal with the hassle of CL.

Is there anything special this thing does or is it mainly just a smartphone with a nice display?

Ok, so I ended up getting the 4S and got my wife the 4. Now, I've never had 2 iphones on my account. Whenever I download a song or an app, it automatically loads on her phone. How do I stop this?

Get your own iTunes account is the easiest way.

On her phone, go to Settings and then iTunes & App Store. Turn off automatic downloads.

Why would you do this? If you want the same app, you have to pay for it two times. I have my 3 iPhones (me, my wife and oldest son) and iPads on one account. The setting Crosseyed mentioned is exactly what I set to avoid stuff automatically downloading, except my iPad which has 64GB, so I left it on for that. Maybe if you only have two devices it isn't a big deal, but I hate paying twice for anything.

You are right. I wasn't aware there was such a setting. I figured he was just picking them up on sync or something.

I've been having issues with the Facebook app, on both my iphone4 and my Gen 1 iPad.

On the iPhone, I most times have to load the app more than once in order for it to start.

On the iPad, I also have to load it multiple times. But the main problem is that the app opens portrait, even if I have the iPad locked in landscape. If I unlock it and shake, it turns landscape.

As far as I'm aware, I the most current version on both devices for both the iOS, and the application.

TIA,

Same here. Facebook just sucks.

Thanks, good to hear others having same issue. You'd think they'd fix the problems...And yes Facebook just sux.

Between the 4s and 5 is a minor screen size change. No other major improvements were added and they changed the adapter.
I consider the move from 3G to 4GLTE a pretty major improvement /hipple
I used my upgrades to update 3 4s' to 5s and I like the 5s a lot better. Not sure I would have done them if I didn't have the upgrades (1 4s went to my FIL who got on my work paid mobile share plan and 1 4s went to my wife, but I just upgraded her). I am selling my wife's 4s once I get the 5 set on the account and I will get a couple hundred more than I paid for the 5, so I will make money on that. The LTE and the screen for movies (I fly a decent amount) are huge improvements and for me the size of the Otterbox case being much smaller is nice as well. I have two younger boys and the Otterboxes have saved my phone and my wife's on countless drops.ETA: I got lucky on my FIL. We had a lot of trouble adding him to our account a couple months ago and I got a 5 when adding him at the discount and gave it to my son (I like him better than my FIL) and gave him my son's 4s (got it cheap in November). Then, a few weeks ago I checked my account and they must not have recorded the original discounted 5 and I could upgrade him again and I used that as a mother's day gift. Nice being net positive for me. ;)

I've searched ITunes help and can't find anything so I'll ask the thread.

I'm looking for the path to where my pictures are automatically imported onto my laptop. And I would like to change that path if possible. Is that setting anywhere in ITunes?

My wife's 4 has a mic issue I think. She can hear voices coming in but no one can hear her talking :pickle: Tried turning on/off and it fixes the problem momentarily but then reverts. Any thoughts? Sorry if this has been covered. Also, if they tell me it can't be repaired, she wants to upgrade but not sure if she wants the 4s or 5. TIA!

Does the speakerphone work? If so then it should be covered. This is a known issue imo

Anyone else experience cellular data turning itself off? Any fix?

ETA: NM. Turns out to be a jailbreak app doing it.

I'm leaving my iphone today. It was a good run. Moving to the S4.

Just too much lack of improvement in the handset, os, and the continued attempts to thwart the j/b community both directly and by not implementing easy fixes to an outdated UI were too much.

gllllllllllllllllllllllllll

Yea, if things don't change/improve with ios7 and the 6, I am probably moving on when my next upgrade is available.

I'm with you.

I don't understand. What is missing from iOS or the iPhone that makes someone say "if things don't change, I'm leaving!" ?

It has great Hardware. Excellent software. Some apps are not available anywhere else. It integrates great with the desktop (particularly if you use a Mac).

I ask because my contract is up in a week and I'm eager to quit paying AT&T so much damn money. I've given thought to selling my ip5 on Craig's for $400 and using the money to buy a 4 and banking the leftover 200. I've thought about a nexus 4. Hell, I've thought abou buying a nexus s.

Then I realize my only criticism of the iPhone 5 is that I've had it for 9 months and I'm wanting something new. I can't think of anything I dislike about the phone, just that I've figured it out and it's a known quantity at this point.

Just not sure what reasons people have to change.

I don't think it's that there's anything wrong with the iPhone per se, it's actually a very good phone. To me it's more about the lack of choices. I made the switch from the iPhone to the Galaxy Note 2 about 4 months ago and I couldn't be happier. The things that sold me on the Note 2 are the large screen, long battery life and fast processor. For other people those things might not be important, in fact the large size may be considered a negative by some, but the fact is that one size never does fit all. For you, maybe the iPhone is the perfect phone. If so, you should stick with it, but there are tons of features on the various Android models that are not available on the iPhone and the choices in the Android market continue to expand while the iPhone remains pretty much the same as it was two years ago. I don't know what the smartphone market will look like when my contract next expires but it's a pretty good bet that the iPhone won't be the best phone out there, at least for me.

A big reason is it's just gotten stale. I see other phones doing things my iphone could've been doin years ago, and probably better. Just give me stuff I want, not something that revolutionizes the world.

eta: I love the iphone. And I dread learning something new. :gettinold: I hope I don't have to change.

I understand completely, but I am a nerd for this stuff and can't ever see myself using some of the features that android trumpets. Google now is awesome, but I don't use my phone as a reference or travel enough for it to be useful. Google voice control is better than Siri, but indobybise Siri anyway. I'm sure android has some photo apps that are better than the native experience on iOS but I don't have to look for updates to the native app. Just trying to find a compelling reason because it would be cheaper for me to move. Maybe that's my reason.

I concur, the iPhone is stale. There is nothing revolutionary about it anymore. Yeah, the apps are nice but most smart phones have apps. And, the apps others don't have, do you really need/use? Its a case by case scenario.

Stating that, maybe, in a way, I have outgrown the iPhone. Or, maybe the purposes I have for an iPhone are not my main purposes anymore. Right now, what I use it for is for the main app on the thing and that is Phone. I use the internet (others can do that), I play one game (which I should not play or I won't miss if I stop) but my "needs" have grown to where I might want to edit some document with MS Word and I cannot on the iPhone.

I remember when I could use bluetooth to link my phone to my computer and my iPhone bluetooth has never linked to my MacBook. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but in order to get anything onto my iPhone, I need to go through iTunes. No SD card slot, micro SD card slot or anything. Now, that is becoming a limit for me. The iPhone is great but I have "out grown" it... or so I feel.

I'm starting to consider a switch too. How is it to play your music on an S4 or Note?

Not sure. I still have my iPhone 4. I looked at Galaxy's but I use Macs and Windows. Not sure if I should jump into a third OS. Therefore I have been looking at Lumia's for the Windows OS.

I went to Verizon today and their Lumia 928 is a little different than the ATT 920. The Verizon has a micro SD slot whereas the ATT one does not. I am antsy to get a new phone but after some research, I want to know more about the Lumia EOS coming in July.

There is usually 100 people in here for an apple keynote. Went downhill pretty quickly
It's no fun if goonsquad has thrown in the towel and isn't here to fish. Even his GB Icon has bailed. Not sure who the biggest ifanboy is now.
Goon gave up on Apple?
He hasn't been seen posting in threads that would otherwise would have had him frothing at the mouth in months. He quit about the time AAPL nosedived from 700 to 500.

I have a 3 and really like it. use it every day. Just curious, is there a reason ipads dont have USB ports?
Universal Serial Bus. When has Apple ever designed a product that easily and universally accepted/connected to other manufacturers' devices? Apple is all about a controlled and closed ecosystem where you expand/upgrade by buying the next Apple release, not simply replacing or plugging in parts.
Apple has included USB in every Mac released since the original bondi blue iMac in 1998.

Bailed? I've always fairly objective about the shortcomings of the brand and platform. My decreasing satisfaction with the iPhone and iOS as a whole is directly tied to real world experience where one of the things I preferred about the platform (stability/reliabilty) has eroded. I'm not "bailing". I'm still a fan of the brand... still greatly prefer OSX... but I'm also objective enough to entertain the Android option if Apple doesn't make enough headway to keep me interested.

So, in short. Bailed.

You're a strange dude.

Gizmodo points out the icons didn't change much, but the in-app format changed quite a bit in the calendar app. Could imply a soft change for ios look/feel.
