The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

I don't get it.. all that information is already on the top corner of the screen
I click on the clock and I can set alarms, timers, stop watch and see the time in different cities. I click on the weather and it brings up the 5 day, 10 day or by hour forecast. I click on the battery and it breaks down my usage etc. Its quite nifty.
Plus, your battery indicator doubles as Batman's penis.

Ok, now you have a giant screen and it's still just a wall of icons should bother more people. But it doesn't.

I'm not trying to troll or anything. It's just sad they can't improve the UI because they feel boxed in by the classic interface.

And the resolution specs are dropping, why the #### is that? They used to lead in resolution.

I use quite a few widgets - One of them has buttons for brightness, ring tone, wifi, flashlight and do not disturb. You can change these buttons to fit your needs as well. I can't imagine using a phone without widgets

I don't understand the fascination with coming into a thread about a product you don't own only to bash away at it. What are you, 12?

I'd love to understand the psychology behind this... It's not limited to this board or phones, either. I see it all the time in an archery board I frequent. Guys waste so much time/energy getting worked up over product pissing matches. It makes no sense. Everyone's entitled to like what they want. Get over it.

See above

I only really use a few widgets, but definitely would not want to lose the direct dial ones. 90% of my phone calls are to my wife, so it's nice to have the one-touch function to make the call.

I'm just assuming ios hasn't added that functionality yet, though.

Tried to live without these in the attempt to clear up some real estate and I didnt last two days.

Trying to think of things I saw blogged during the event.

Has nobody mentioned the 1080p video recorder and 240fps slo-mo on the 6+? They were comparing the camera to an optical zoom SLR vs Digital zoom in the smaller one.

Lots of good iOS stuff.
iOS Finally getting the ability to adjust individual iMessage strings (mute, add/remove folks, etc) is going to be very very nice. As someone who usually has 5-10 group text strings for various social/work topics... it's definitely something that has been missing for FAR too long.

For me:

Wireless charging isn't that big of a deal. In the grad scheme of things, two seconds plugging in the phone at the end of the night is inconsequential. I personally greatly prefer a nicer (to me)metal phone case without wireless charging to a plastic case with wireless charging.

Widgets, again, not a huge deal. I don't typically watch the weather or stock market like a hawk and most of the functions I perform with my phone on a regular basis aren't widget-friendly.

Very excited to see the new camera with the slow-mo, low light capabilities, etc. I have no desire to have to start working with 13-15MP image sizes for every snapshot I take. 8MP (full resolution printable at 8x10") is sufficient. I'd certainly rather have a higher quality 8MP camera over a 13MP camera that snaps lower quality images. Down the road, IF they offer a higher resolution sensor, I'd prefer it come with a way to set a default lower resolution (8MP) with an ability to quickly switch to higher resolution (and file size) when called for.
My phone has a glass backing and wireless charging? Not plastic.

I paid attention to the announcement because I'm always curious if Apple will break some new ground. They did with the first iPhone, and again with Siri. Nothing groundbreaking this time, but I felt compelled to speak up... Apple routinely overcharges for what they deliver and then they market the hell out of their products. End result is a public that is generally poorly informed. So, I just don't understand how the typically rational people on this site do not get it. Beyond that, no one buys these phones off contract (way to pricey that way), and people re-upping contracts with the carriers gives me sleepless nights. Its like watching people burn money. I'm not trying to be antagonistic, just trying to open some eyes is all.

Your analysis of one of the most successful companies in history is that they over charge and under deliver?

I'd like to go back to iphones, they at one time were a decent option when jailbroken. I wish their stock os was decent, but it doesn't suit my needs. If I could run android on an iphone I'd probably do it in a second and not look back. I'm not the only one in that boat.

So I'm more hoping they catch up with the rest of the phones out there soon. It doesn't really look like they've closed the gap except in a few hardware specs.

From a pure technology perspective, this is correct, but he also included marketing which you ignored. Their marketing is second to none. Wipe all that out and look at form/functionality post siri and HULK is correct. However, it's foolish not to acknowledge that their innovations in the original iPhones / iPads up to Siri put them in the position to be able to milk it for all they can now. Yes, they are simply riding the wave right now, but it's the wave they created. They need to figure out how to create a new wave in the not too distant future though.

Yep, I want to use the best product. Apple has a considerable edge in laptops with the MacBook Air lines. The phones are decidedly behind their peers and it is interesting that people pay so much more for them.

Yes, while convincing their customer that they're getting the absolute best. Thats is exactly why they are so sucessful. Their profit margins on phones CRUSH everyone elses.

And, they're the main reason contracts have gotten so damn screwy in this country. They basically dictated a $450 subsidy once they became the hot shizz. Samsung followed suit. No one can afford to buy this phone without subsidies, and they dictate a massive subsidy to the carriers, which in turn killed off things like annual upgrades for people under contract (this was par for the course when subsidies were typically between $200-$300). Making contracts basically a commitment to get raped by a carrier for 2 years. For those who go no-contract plans with carriers and their respective phone financing plans, the top end 6plus is going to run them $40 a month. Thats crazy.

Most high end android users are former Apple users, so we like to keep an eye on things. Most of it is just schtick anyways.

iPhone release in the midst of an all out price war between the carriers will be interesting. I'm predicting LOW profit margins for the industry this fall.

Yep!

My iPhone 5 is worn (scratches/ wear marks from sliding in/out of a snug battery case, etc) and an off model (CSpire) so the $200 gift card for no hassle is worth it. I'd be lucky to get $250 for it via ebay, and have to deal with fees/hassle.

Turn in my old phone.

Get iPhone 64 GB iPhone 6 for $100-200 (6 or 6+)

Sign up for $60/mo for 2GB data and unlimited everything else.

Done.

I don't particularly care about a 2 year contract. Hulk, I believe even you said in the Phone Plan thread that you'd be hard pressed to beat that plan with any of the fringe carriers (while still maintaining best-in-class coverage) even off contract, right?

technically they receive a $200 gift card to use towards new iPhone. they could use $200 towards 64GB, i6+, etc is my understanding. It doesn't have to be the iphone 6 16GB.

If you insist on having an iPhone, this is probably the way to do it. Basically the price difference for a similar prepaid option is about $10 to $20 a month depending on a few variables w/ a person's usage, which ends up about the same as the subsidy, or potentially better. So yeah, if you must have that phone, this is definitely the right way to go about it... especially considering the $200 hassel free trade in.

End result is a public that is generally poorly informed.
Is it that the public is poorly informed? Or that the majority of the folks still buying apple products might, gasp, have different preferences than you?

Crazy thought, but there are a lot of us that prefer the iOS world and have the crazy perception that the iPhone is the best looking/engineered/built phone on the market.
Marketing has altered your preferences imo. Best looking is completely subjective and an easy perception to modify. Best engineered and built phone? Thats either the LG G3 or the HTC One M8. But I digress, I only used to do Pyschological Operations for the Army, I know nothing about controlling messages to shape opinions.

And you have to officially the first person ever to say HTC has the "best engineered / built anything" :brush:

Way more snarky sounding than I intended. But I do think that. If you think that the new iPhone is a miracle of innovation and beauty and in its own class by itself, you've swallowed their marketing's message hook, line, and sinker.

Not saying its a terrible phone. Lots to love about it. But it is not in its own class, and from my perspective, it lags several other phones. Heck, it only has 1 GB of RAM and is still only dual core. I know Apple makes up some ground by having full integration from end to end in its system, but still, the performance on this phone should be less than half of what the Note 4 will do.

Alright I'm going to tap out of the back and forth... I'll let this die down and let the fandroid-bois relocate back to the android thread. Will check back in later in the week.

One thing though... anyone know if Apple Stores or Verizon stores will have the actual phones in house to check out when the pre-orders start on Friday?

Actually I'm someone who has worked in design for 20+ years. Having taken down a few awards and done a bit of judging, I feel qualified in my perceptions of what is good design...

But the bottom line is:

• The apple crew are in here because they prefer the product, and are trying to look into details about it.

• Most of the android crew (like yourself) are acting like kids (worst offender: card trader) or getting bent out of shape because people actually have their own opinions on stuff that doesn't jive with yours.

You guys don't like the iPhone. Cool. Not sure why you're wasting your time carpet bombing this thread with snarky, childish crap. You guys on HTC's payroll? Just don't have anything better to do? Because a few of you guys are coming off pretty badly. Just sayin.

I would love to have widgets, but at this point I am locked into Apple. Have music match (which I love and we use it for my kids) all the apps that I don't want to rebuy in Google Play....so locked into the ecosystem.

Cool. Do you run around doing benchmarks on your phone all day to impress the ladies? ;) Cmon man. Who cares if you have a 8Ghz pentacore processor with 64GB of RAM? Next to nobody is doing anything on the phone that will even begin to use that horsepower. Somehow the "slow" Apple chips manage to still have fewer hangs/crashes during normal use than many "superpowered" android handsets. It's a miracle!

If you're a hardcore gamer, perhaps you will see benefits in framerate in some games, I don't know. Reviews of the new gaming architecture are pretty good with the latest iPhones. Otherwise... if the phone does everything I want, lag free, who gives a #### if it's "only" a dual core instead of a quad core...aside from techgeeks?

Seriously....

In the past all the stores have been hit or miss. Your best bet would just to be contact the store and ask them. I would say at the very least they would have a "plastic" or a dummy phone there to get a feel for the size.

You would care if your phone could do more than two things at once

What the hell?! The iPhone doesn't have widgets?!?! Game changer.
You guys said the same thing about notifications, screen size etc., but cream yourself when Apple comes out with it years later. You'll do the same for widgets in a year it two when Apple figures out how to do that. Predictable and hilarious.
