The Apple iPhone Thread (4 Viewers)

I bought the best Android phone on the market last year. It was buggy and no faster than an Iphone. That being said, I almost stuck with it because I loved the 5.7. Now that Apple has (long overdue) finally gone to the 5.5, the competition is over, in my mind.

The tech specs are 100% irrelevant. People that don't even understand how this stuff works are talking about tech specs. It's hilarious.

The point is, both phones are plenty fast enough and plenty big enough. They all play the same games, browse the same web, get on twitter and facebook and take pictures.

Which one you get is now basically decided by which OS you like better. For me, iOS absolutely annihilates the buggy Android OS. Some disagree.

I switched to the iPhone 5 as soon as it came out because I was tired of dealing with HTC hardware and did not like the bigger Samsung flagship phones.

I have had just as many hardware issues as I did with HTC. I have had the following issues with my 5. Power button recall, Battery Recall, Charging port went out twice, and the top right of the screen decided to separate from the phone. Luckily apple fixed all the issues and it simply required me to get a loaner phone 6 or 7 times. Signal reception is the worst of any phone I have EVER had. Luckily it looks like the reception issues are fixed in the 5s my wife just got.

He's always been all about tricking out his truck, car, jet skis and motorcycles with the latest trim kits, performance enhancements and stereo systems. Dude LOVES IT. It makes him feel good to talk specs and show how loud they get or how fast they drive. He's the same way with his Android phones and used to try and rub these numbers and specs in my face. Most of them meaningless to me.

Then a few years ago he kind of just stopped and realized that we see things different.

I drive a nice mid-sized SUV that he calls Mommy Car and Grocery Getter. I have never thought of customizing anything on it outside of the options I chose at the dealership. I love my car. Don't care how fast it goes or where I take it off-roading. It's comfy, smooth, neat and clean. Just the way I like it.

On a road trip I explained this to him and now he gets it, I get him. We're buds, we laugh like hell, but we like different kind of cars, phones and women. But in the end, none of it really matters.

IMO The 5 was NOT up to typical Apple standards... somewhat of a dud. Quality, battery, etc... across the board. Mine has been reliable (short of shoddy battery life, that apparently isn't under the recall batch) but I don't doubt your repair issues with that model.

The A7 from a year ago was even 64 bit... wasn't it? I must be missing something...

No. I have an external battery that can charge my phone when I need more juice. Never really had memory issues.

I completely agree. It is all about what is most important to you. I don't know why people even bother debating this crap any more.

To me the most important thing for a phone is to be able to stick a large SD card in there so that I can run my phone as a hotspot media server to allow all of our devices, Apple and non-Apple alike, to watch the movies and TV shows I've downloaded.

Most people don't care about that stuff, including my wife, and for her I always get Apple products. I geek out on the technology, and she reaps the benefits.

I wish my phone had enough juice to make it thru the day, but I'm a power user, so doubting there is any phone that will last. Thankfully the iPhone has an extremely robust aftermarket support with lots of options. I used to have replaceable batteries in older phones but invariably they'd get lost or whatever. My leaning toward the 6+ has more to do with the additional battery life than it does the 5.5 over 4.7" screen.

STORAGE: 32GB phone here. I use spotify for my music (with some offline playlists) and Dropbox/Box/FTP servers for my files so I don't really see a storage issue. I'll likely get the 64GB phone to be safe now, but I haven't ever even filled up my current IPhone desite having over 3000 photos stored on it (backed up to iCloud and Box for redundancy). IMO removable storage is dying/dead.

he makes a valid point... if you're needing to carry large amounts of data on a phone while travelling, but you swap phones in diff parts of the world (burner often cheaper than paying roaming), then having the ability to hot-swap a mSD card with 64GB data to a new phone could be handy if needing full access to all files. I personally would try to use cloud-based storage there for my needs, but I have no doubt there are others where this is a much better solution.

I'm still waiting to see all the Apple guys creaming themselves over anything. Been in this thread with every new release and I don't really think anyone ever got that excited over anything.

this is a thread about the iphone. many people are checking in to get information and discuss the new phone that is being released. yet they have to wade through pages of posts from android guys telling them that apple/iphones suck.

I was honestly hoping for more. I'd get a slightly bigger screen, slightly better battery life, and a new wi-fi standard that my home router doesn't utilize. What else would I be getting?

One thing to think about when you read/hear these kinds of reviews questioning the larger phone and the inability to reach with one hand is that you may simply end up holding the phone in a slightly different way in your hand to compensate. I know that with mine, I hold the phone more on my fingers and less on my palm, with the bottom resting mostly on my little finger. That's different from the way I held my iPhone, but I got used to it quickly and it allows my thumb to reach further. I rarely can't reach something on the screen (I have relatively long fingers, but this is on a 5.7" phone). It might not be as easy to reach the upper right corner, but IMO the larger display is worth it.

Anyway, people who take five minutes with the 6+ and try to hold it exactly the same way as they're used to might not be thrilled.

Also, international data roaming in the U.S. is affordable, but in the rest of the world, it can be ridiculous

Here in Canada, it costs $60/month for 40 GB of data roaming in Europe. And if you want to add the U.S., its another $40/month. It is not financially feasible to utilize cloud services outside the country with those prices.

Not me. And half the time I do, it's over car speaker anyway. That was part of my consideration to move to a bigger phone. Like the other stuff, I've gotten used to talking on this Note, but the old iphone was definitely more comfortable to use as a handset.

This is what worries me about getting the plus. It would be like holding a small tablet to my ear. I use Bluetooth when possible, but sometimes that isn't possible.

I'm actually switching to the smaller one. I travel often and take my phone with me. I'd rather not make myself too big of a target especially if my phone won't fit in shorts pockets or something.

I don't know if I've ever made a video on it aside from ones of my dog doing something crazy. The processor has never been "slow" in opening any app that I use in checking facebook or sports scores. The battery life (which I was very hopeful about) isn't that much improved. I'm not sure about the touchless payment thing yet, and not sure the touch ID thing is that important to me (haven't lost a phone in the 12 years since I'd had a cell phone).

Just saying I was honestly hoping for more.

Not being snide at all so wanted to preface that... but what exactly were you realistically hoping for, then?

We're talking about pretty good upgrades in pretty much every aspects of the phone's performance, plus introducing a couple new pretty significant features that you simply dismiss as "not sure about".

If you're happy with your current phone then you certainly don't need to upgrade.

If you're wanting to upgrade but are looking for more significant features, I'm just curious what you're expecting that would trigger your purchase?

Nah that wasn't meant towards you. I'm interested in the size talk, I'm pretty set on the 4.7 but want to hear about the bigger phones advantages and disadvantaves. I was referring to the "Android has had that for 5 years now" nonsense.

I don't know if I've ever made a video on it aside from ones of my dog doing something crazy. The processor has never been "slow" in opening any app that I use in checking facebook or sports scores. The battery life (which I was very hopeful about) isn't that much improved. I'm not sure about the touchless payment thing yet, and not sure the touch ID thing is that important to me (haven't lost a phone in the 12 years since I'd had a cell phone).Just saying I was honestly hoping for more.

What exactly were you hoping for? Phone advancement from here on out will be marginal unless we take a huge leap in battery power:size.

I currently have both an iPhone 5 and Note 3. Once I got the Note, which is my dedicated work phone, it became difficult to use the iPhone for anything more than calls and listening to music while running/working out as I got spoiled on the screen size to the point it's difficult to look at anything on the iPhone.

That said, the smaller size is actually an advantage if you use your phone in your exercise program. I need to figure out if there are good solutions for that on the 5.5.

I'm currently the owner of an original 5. Was waiting for this release before upgrading, but now I'm left wondering why I should (aside from the "free upgrade" program Verizon is using). I was honestly hoping for more. I'd get a slightly bigger screen, slightly better battery life, and a new wi-fi standard that my home router doesn't utilize. What else would I be getting?

I don't usually hold it to my ear. I almost always use a wired mic/earpiece with it or speakerphone depending on where I am.

yeah, some of these big phones are more like a tablet.

I've given serious thought to switching to a phone like the samsung galaxy 5, but that thing looks huge. it's wider than the 6+, which seems like it would make using with one hand more difficult.

I was leaning towards the 6+ based on what people in here have been saying regarding bigger screens, but I don't want to carry around a mini ipad in my pocket.

I think the Note is okay in a front pocket in dress/casual slacks, though I still generally go for a jacket or shirt pocket if one is available. Not great for jeans pockets, unless you wear super loose/baggy jeans I guess.
