The Apple iPhone Thread (6 Viewers)

1. It's extremely annoying to wade through all of the pissing. This is an iphone thread. Why not just start an android vs iphone thread (if there isn't one already)

2. Some people don't give a #### about the specs. Simply, the iphone system works for them, and if there's a new iphone that's better, then great for them

3. I hate itunes and Mac computers, but I like the iphone. It simplifies things for me. I always felt I had too many options with android

I currently have both an iPhone 5 and Note 3. Once I got the Note, which is my dedicated work phone, it became difficult to use the iPhone for anything more than calls and listening to music while running/working out as I got spoiled on the screen size to the point it's difficult to look at anything on the iPhone.

That said, the smaller size is actually an advantage if you use your phone in your exercise program. I need to figure out if there are good solutions for that on the 5.5.
Serious question, do you feel like an idiot holding the note 3 to your ear? Have never used a phone that big, just seems too big to actually use as a phone. Could totally understand not liking going back to the smaller screen though, for other uses.
I'm not sure why you'd think you would look silly?

;)
woah

how big is that monster

Any Android owners contemplating a switch to the iPhone 6 or 6+, specifically Galaxy S4 or 5 owners. I'm up for an upgrade and have been a loyal Android owner for the past 4 years but find the iPhone 6 some what intriguing. Any pros and cons vs Androids phones such as Samsung's Galaxy's or HTC's
Went from Apple to Android several years ago and can't imagine going back to an iPhone. The wife recently was given an iPhone for work after dumping their blackberries and she is dumbfounded as to why anyone prefers the iPhone's over the better Droids.

And yes its the little things like widgets, swype, ok google or always listen, universal usb cables, battery life, google now, app integration, ability to choose default apps, customization, multiple accounts (just learned the importance of this one), and on and on and on
BS. You've been ripping the iPhone since the day it came out.
Been ripping on it since it was no longer the superior phone and Apple users were acting as if it was. I am different than some Android users, I actually want Apple to put out a far superior product so that it spurns competition, this way the consumer wins. Sadly Apple has not put out a phone that comes close to its Android counterparts in years and nothing has changed over the past few days.
I just have to laugh at this. There's literally no way my parents could deal with an Android phone. I'm sure the tech specs, apps, widgets, are better, but getting it to work and more importantly getting any non-tech person comfortable on the device is an entirely different matter. My dad was an IBM programming engineer/manager for years, but god forbid he try to get a Dell machine to sync with an Android phone these days. He got a MacBook Air ("best" and " easiest" computer he's ever had and when he has a question he goes to the Apple Store to get training) and now can use the iPhone/iPad. That's the value. You can pu pu the specs or their "following" nature, but Apple's managed to figure out how to manage their ecosystem better than anyone to everyday consumer.
Oh c'mon. :bs:

Everything syncs with google. You sign into your google account on your new phone, tablet etc all of your apps are DL'd, all of your music is right there etc etc its simple. You do not have to customize a thing if you do not want to and adding a widget is as simple as adding an app. If your parents cant do that I dont know what to tell you.
good posting. Took me 10 seconds to log into my google account

so did we finally determine which phone it is that everyone should be mandated to like? And are we going to ship all dissenters off to some remote island to die?

if so lets settle on restaurants....why all these choices? Shouldn't everyone just pick one restaurant that we all decide is our favorite and get rid of the rest?

Life will be so much easier without all these personal preferences

Just to give you iPhone folks an idea of why us Android folks get salty sometimes, here are 2 quotes taken directly from The Verge:

Samsung Galaxy Note 3: "It's still absurdly big, however, and it's not a phone that you can use with one hand." - Oct 1, 2013

Apple iPhone 6 Plus: "It feels pretty massive. But it doesn't feel so massive that it's completely unwieldy... It's not too bad to hold in one hand." - Sept 9, 2014

The iPhone 6 Plus is bigger than the Note 3. When tech journalists can't pay attention to reality when it comes to these phones, I can't expect non-nerds to.

yeah, some of these big phones are more like a tablet.

I've given serious thought to switching to a phone like the samsung galaxy 5, but that thing looks huge. it's wider than the 6+, which seems like it would make using with one hand more difficult.

I was leaning towards the 6+ based on what people in here have been saying regarding bigger screens, but I don't want to carry around a mini ipad in my pocket.
They already have a solution for that http://pocketnow.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/phonebelt.jpg

Agreed almost 100% ;) Especially the bolded.

Verizon isn't likely to give unlimited data. What is your data usage like now? I use my phone a ####load and I usually hover around 2GB give or take a half GB.

As it stands they have a $60/mo Individual plan with 2GB data, and additional data is $15/GB. Meaning if you used 3GB, you'd owe $75... 4GB would be $90...etc. IMO that's a pretty damn good value for all but the heaviest data users.

Think I am going non-plus. Since I bought my iPad, I rarely use my iPhone for much of anything except for quick email and twitter checks. Can't see carrying around something the size of a Note for my needs.

ETA: I am going to check both models out before I commit though.
With the bigger phones (especially the plus) you might find things work out the other way around. I think I mentioned it earlier in this thread, but since I got a larger phone, I hardly ever reach for one of the tablets in the house. Browsing is comfortable on these things.

thx gb. not sure about my usage. Hard to know when i'm on wifi or not. Are you saying that I don't have to commit to the extra GB up front? For example, if I just sign up for the 2GB plan I'm going to be charged $60/month. On months where I use more, I'll get changed $15 extra a GB...but this will only happen if when I use more? That would be great if so

A good consideration. I am going to let the initial onslaught die down before I make any decision any way. I don't take my iPad with me most places so a larger phone might be good. Will wait for reviews in here starting the 19th.

Apple's not stupid...granted they're following the Android lead, but there is something to be said for letting others be the guinea pig on a whole host of minor issues. I'm sure they could have put a larger phone out awhile ago (or had widgets or any of the other things they've copied from Android), but if those changes won't be met positively why do them. It's cynical, but it's worked so far.
Apple's largest "boom" if you will was when they were the innovators, not the followers.

I forgot about Swype. I could never use another keyboard. Typing on my wife's iphone makes me want to throw it against a wall. But that's just me.
well, you and 95% of the other people who have access to swype. I don't get why Apple won't accommodate it.
Noticed this: http://www.swype.com/get-swype/swype-on-ios-2/
Good for them, and for all you iPhone guys. I beg you...please, please, please give it a shot...after a day you'll never be able to go back.

The Sprint website will show you your usage per month. I thought I used a ton but only went over 2GB once in the last year. I'm switching to the 2GB plan on Verizon and should be fine.

That's how it works. Sign up for the 2GB plan for $60. Pay extra if you use more.

All the major carriers have interfaces to show usage, by phone. I was surprised also to see that my data is way down these days (I have lots of wifi access everywhere I go apparently).

That is correct. Sorta a month to month scaling based on useage. It's the plan I'll be going with tomorrow when I pre-order. If I'm blowing through 2 extra GB of data, the $30 overage isn't exactly going to kill me. Seems to be a win win.

I will definitely give it a shot. I've used it before and it seemed like it had a learning curve, but so does pretty much anything. I can personally flat out FLY on an iphone keypad now... generally 50-70wpm (even without looking, though that usually leans on autocorrect a little more).

 hopefully they include iPod as well. I think the code base is the same between the three, right?
yep!

I was feeling torn between getting the 6 and 6 Plus, thinking the Plus may be just too big for comfort. But a coworker has the Samsung Galaxy S4, which is roughly the overall size of the 6 (a little shorter top-to-bottom), but with the screen size roughly the size of the 6 Plus, and after handling his S4, I don't think the 6 Plus will be too unwieldy.

Out of morbid curiosity I took the template and cut out a hunk of ~1/4" thick cardboard in the dimensions of the 6+ and checked it out in pocket. No problem in dress slacks. May be a bit snug in jeans... will see. May be a "back pocket" thing in that case.

i use that crazy side tech pocket a lot...doubt it'd fit there

but i also wear pants with big ole side pockets where it would fit fine

ANy thoughts on best place (if it matters) to pre-order? Apple/carrier/BestBuy, etc?
Not sure if this is comprehesive but it's something.

Will you be turning in an old iPhone? Which model? Do you know which carrier/plan you wish to use? IMO it's not worth saving $50-100 on the front end to be locked into a plan with an inferior carrier/plan for 2 years. Not saying you'd do that... just something to consider.
THanks for the info. Very helpful. Yeah, I have a $50 kickback sitting there from BB but I just saw in your link that AT&T is offering $100 back for any phone set up by 09/30 (new and existing customers). Thanks again.

IS the template to scale? I know it says it but I didn't measure correctly or it is slightly off on the 6+ on screen and width (dead on with the other two).

The exterior dimensions were off? Or the screen was off?

Quick question for the Verizon guys that have a corporate discount. Does it apply to the whole bill or just a portion? At Sprint it only applies to the data part. Also does it only apply to the one line?

For me, it's per the base charge of the account - not line by line. I think my plan has a $50 "base charge" and then $40 per line (just me and the wife) for a total of $130 a month. My discount is 20% (I think) off the $50, it doesn't do anything to the $40 per line fees. I do now, though, have a "month to month" discount off of one of my lines, which I don't quite get, but I'll happily accept.

Thanks for the response. I think it will be cheaper for the wife and I to just get 2 separate single line plans for $60 each. The equivalent family plan would be $136 after discount for the same amount of data.

How's that work? Didn't know you could do that. How much data?

Edit - just found the info. You may be onto something. It may be cheaper for my wife and I to split.

Wrong. The Note is a better comparison.

I don't know much about Google Wallet vs. Apply Pay but is this something where one or the other will "win" that market or will both be supported? Honestly, that alone would be a deciding factor for me.
http://heavy.com/tech/2014/09/apple-pay-vs-google-wallet-comparison-best-digital-mobile/

I found this although it doesn't have a lot of detail. It sounds like it could be a pain to have to deal with two different systems. Do any of you have more details or know how this will play out? I like some of the other new features but this would be the big selling point for me.

sorry if this is a repost, but might be useful:

Yep.

My cardboard cutout (however silly it may be) offered me a little comfort. Heading to a Verizon store around the corner to grab a Note and test it out. I don't love the idea of a phone that size, but the added battery life is really driving this for me.
Same with me - the battery life is pushing me to the 6+, but after seei all the cut outs and such, I think I'll probably got 4.7. I have an iPad mini, I don't need another one.

Yep...

That $60 for 2GB plan on Verizon's 4G Network (best in the US by a pretty good margin) is a damn fine deal. Love the fairly reasonable price for scaling up data use ($15/GB) as well.

I don't own an ipad and I use my phone a lot for browsing so that is factoring into the decision. I already rarely use my MacBook Pro for couch browsing... this would likely relegate it to my laptop bag for anything but Creative Suite use.

They aren't "share everything" plans, so you wouldn't have those extras that come with share everything plans - like the NFL stuff, and maybe not international texting (not sure on that one). It would give my wife and I each 2 GB a month, though, rather than us having to share 2 GM a month for about the same money. I assume you can move from a shared account to two separate accounts?

Just hit the Verizon store and played with the note... It's cartoonish big but it will fit surprisingly comfortably in my pocket.

I spoke with a rep who said porting the number over from another carrier is a instant thing, is that true?

He looked over my iPhone 5 (pretty scuffed up but works fine) and said it's no problem and I would get the $200 credit even since it's a cspire phone (not compatible w many networks.

Guy gave me his business card with his mobile number, and assured me that even though it's gonna be slammed tomorrow if I let him know I'm close he will make sure to get me in and out quickly. I'm assuming he will get a commission judging by his motivation level.

Yes. I did it back with my original iPhone. It's literally instantaneous, if I remember correctly.
