The Apple iPhone Thread (8 Viewers)

Friend of mine's iphone 5c just died (water damage)... any way to get data off it even though it wont turn on?  She had all her business contacts on it and stupidly didn't back them up.

Bury it in rice
Tried that, still wont turn on.  Going to try holding the home/power button for 30 seconds to see if that works but it's just a hunk of plastic at the moment.  Just curious if there was a way to get the data off it externally like you could a hard drive from a computer.

Nope....that's not Apple's approach.

A small version of  last year's phone, a small version of last year's iPad pro and a handful of OS updates... least exciting Apple event ever

Sorry if this was posted already, couldn't find via search. Wife's iPhone 5C keeps disabling, we do not forget the passcode, and did not change it recently. Can't get into the phone, keeps rebooting and then disabling after we enter the passcode. Are we screwed? It is not set up with iTunes. All pictures are backed up to iCloud. What can we do to get it working again? TIA.

Might it be related to the iOS 9.3 update? I heard it wasn't working well for some earlier models and that they pulled it back for a few days to fix some glitches.

Posted this in Hulk's Ting thread, but thought I might get better responses here:

First of all, thanks again Hulk!  Been on Ting since July 2013, my average bill is around $60 for 5 phones (Wife, Son#1, Son#2, MIL, SIL).  My phone is supplied through work.

Anyway, my wife and 2 sons have all have an iphone4.  My wife's is in good condition, but has issues charging quite often (says not supported).  Son #1 has a shattered back screen (In a case so no real impact).  Son #2 has a cracked screen on the front in 2 places.

Need new phones for them, mostly due to apps are not supported on iphone 4 for the boys.

Looking at getting them an iphone5c and/or iphone5s.  Anyone have any opinions? (Maybe I should post this in the iphone thread) 5c is lower in price, but better processor in 5s.  Trying to keep costs down.  iphone 6 and 6+ is just too much.  Looks like I can get 2 5c's and 1 5s for about $450 total on ebay, all in great condition.

Thanks for any input.

Just learned about this quick simple way to clear up space without deleting apps, pics, etc.  Freed up close to a few GB for me in about a minute

http://www.fox4news.com/news/117763675-story

A user named 'eavesdroppingyou' wrote that you can pull off the trick by heading to iTunes and trying to "rent" a movie with a bigger file size than what your phone has available in storage. When you click the "rent" button, he says, you'll receive a message notifying you that there is not enough available space on your device. You then have the option of viewing your "settings." When you click on "settings," 'eavesdroppingyou' says, unused data from your iPhone is erased. He says by repeating the process four to five times, you may be able to recover nearly 2GB. And as long as the file size of the movie is more than what you have free on your phone - you won't have to actually pay.

Lifeproof Fre Power case failed me poolside last night. RIP iPhone 6.... going on my 5th one. This time it's a handset insurance ($199) replacement instead of warranty.

So everything I've read about the 7 has speculated that it won't have a headphone jack. That is such a stupid ####### decision. Really makes no sense and makes me quite angry. I don't get that decision at all.

Yeah I can't say I'm too excited for this version. They want to take out the headphone jack to make it thinner and waterproof, but there are plenty of phones out there currently that are waterproof and still have the headphone jack. And do people really care about thinner phones? Just about every person I see with any phone (iPhone or Android) has their phone in case that makes it thicker. So what is the point of constantly making phones thinner? Why not add better battery life? Drop proof? Waterproof? Those are things people really want.

Assuming they're going to give you a set of Bluetooth earbuds of some sort with the phone, what's the problem?

All the people who have high end wired headphones, that now have to switch to something else, or more than likely buy an adapter to still be able to use them.

Assuming they're going to give you a set of Bluetooth earbuds of some sort with the phone, what's the problem?
1) The sound in bluetooth headphones isn't as good;

2) LOTS of people (including me) have invested in some really good headphones. That aren't bluetooth.

The non-hype is palpable. Now that I pay for my phones with the 2 year contract subsidies gone, I don't see myself upgrading for a long time.

Any good leaks on the 7 yet?  Been laying off an upgrade for a year or so waiting to see if something cool comes up.

That's a bad assumption, haven't seen one report saying Bluetooth earphones included. They're all saying lightning connected earphones and a lighting adapter for the old earphones.

Let's say they include Bluetooth headphones. Are they increasing battery life now? Having to have your Bluetooth on all the time with headphones will certainly drain your battery quicker.

Either or both included with the phone?  If they are including the later, I'm cool with it.  Just throw in a regular set of white earbuds and an adapter and no issue with me.

The one thing you need for the adapter is a pass thru for a charger.

I'd imagine it's for women, who are on the phones constantly and would care about the aesthetics of the phone. Plus, it's not leaving a purse or back pocket so it's protected without a case. Personally, I'll trade function for form all day long because, I don't have a purse and the phone is much more susceptible to drops that way.

Have read that this is the best battery upgrade for an iPhone. We'll see.

Supposedly both; lightning connected earphones and the adapter for your old earphones.

Agreed 100% here. I'm obviously Pro apple.. and I get the motive for their "thinner/lighter" vision from a design perspective, but the problem is that it's now interfering with functionality. Want to wow the #### out of me? Keep it the same thickness or a hair thicker, double (or more) the battery life, make it waterproof with a scratchproof screen, and offer some form of corner bumpers like these into it to make it relatively drop proof. That will be the panty-dropper for me.  GIve me a phone I don't NEED a battery/protective case for so I don't have to hide this beautiful device you've created behind an ugly bulky plastic case.

It's a pure moneygrab now that they own beats.  totally lame
Eh the crossover purchases are miniscule.. beats purchase was 90% about the music service and 10% about the headphones.

The one thing you need for the adapter is a pass thru for a charger.
THIS. I frequently will listen to headphones while charging. Having to carry a splitter is going to be annoying as ####.  You have a giant boner for lightning port to shave 0.2mm? Fine.. give me two lightning ports.

Agree, they need to make a multi port lightning connector so I can charge and use my earphones simultaneously. Not sure that's technically possible.

Or like icon said two lightning ports. So dumb not to.

Isn't the new note a disaster? Only thing keeping my with Apple is iMessage. Stupid reason but I like seeing if a response is coming
I switched to the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active about 15 months ago, and will be coming back to Apple once they at least waterproof the phones. The iMessage monopoly is a deal breaker, and I'll admit Apple has me there. Filthy play on Apple's part which absolutely infuriates me, but having to convince every person with an iPhone to delete and re-add you for group conversations 1+ year out - and then still hope it works - just flat out sucks and is not practical, and I'm still living it. Grass is not greener on the other side, I liked open architecture at first but with slow OS releases, there is a most definite case to be made for a closed architecture. Marshmallow came out and nuked my battery life (big sell point of the device I bought), and there's no update in sight. At least you get that with Apple if the masses scream loud enough on a bug.

Ugh. I submit to the Apple iPhone overlords, I guess.

Maybe this has been covered but if there is no headphone jack, is there a wireless adaptor?  I have vmoda 100's headphones and prefer to use these but they are not wireless.  Can I still use them?

I'll be really interested to see how well the 7 sells. From all reports, this doesn't seem much different than the 6/6s except for a faster processor and no headphone jack. With most carriers doing away with the phone subsidies, what's my incentive to shell out another $650 on a phone that isn't really much different from my 6?

According to Kuo, the iPhone 7 It will be waterproof to a depth of one metre for up to 30 minutes - a rating known as IPX7, which is the same as the Apple Watch .

Yeah I'm with you here. They're facing a double whammy of downward pressures on phone sales... a maturity of the product segment (improvements are more incremental than revolutionary), and the loss of subsidies (which were effectively created to improves sales of their high-dollar devices).

Definitely an interesting time for Apple...

I think the bold is going overlooked by everyone. Phones are now at the point of computers, IMO. There isn't really a reason to upgrade to a new one unless the old one stops working. I honestly don't even know what more I would want my iPhone to do at this point. The only things that really change any more are the camera gets a little better, the processor gets a little fast, and the phone gets a little slimmer. None of those are reasons for me to shell out $650 every year or even every other year at this point. I'll hold onto my current iPhone 6 until 1) it stops working or 2) it stops getting the latest iOS updates or 3) if I change carriers and I also have to change phones.
