The Beatles (1 Viewer)

The cherry on top of the no Julian thing...closing with Hey Jude. Oof. I didn't expect to see him involved, but I didn't even seen him there. Have to assume they'd have shown him if he was, as ridiculous as they were with the asinine crowd shots. Hey look, there's some chick from the Big Bang Theory looking moved my Yellow Submarine! CBS and the producers totally blew would should have been a big night. Of course, Paul's band was great, and even Ringo delivered Matchox well and sounded good on drums. But ultimately, far too much concern for bland, current pop stars. Should have taken a page out of the Concert for George book.
I thought the same thing. I guess Julian wasn't there. I didn't notice any of Paul's kids either though.

I didn't think they blew it at all. Katy Perry, and Maroon 5 were pretty bad but everything else went between very good (Stevie Wonder, Grohl, Lynn, Gary Clark Jr., Legend/Keyes), interesting (Paisley/Williams), and average (Mayer/Urban, Imagine Dragons).

Good point. And Sean, in top of being in the Plastic Ono Band, accompanies Yoko to just about every public appearance.

Anyone know if the overnight ratings have been released yet? I'm thinking that this show kicked ###. Everyone on my Facebook was talking about it. It was up against the Olympics, so I'm interested to see who won.

I thought CBS did a great job. Thought all but a few of the acts were terrific.

The sad thing about Julian is he appeared to be the one child who maybe had the talen and the sound to step in for one of the originals. IIRC, Ringo has a son playing drums, Paul has a guitarist son, and George's son, Danny, play professionally I believe, but Julian actually sounds like John Lennon.

But Julian and Sean and Yoko have very bad blood. And Julian also once had substance abuse problems.

Zak Starkey is the most talented son of an ex-Beatle - by a long shot.

I may not know enough about it I guess. I was really just commenting on how much Julian sounds like John, maybe I shouldn't have brought talent into it. Zak's played with Ringo's All-Star band? I know I've heard of him, just not sure what he's done.

He has been playing and recording with the Who since '96 and he was in Oasis IIRC.

I forgot about his being in The Who, you're right, didn't know about Oasis. So overall, sounds like y'all are right.

Did anyone else find it odd that Paul played Birthday? One of the very few Beatles songs where Ringo didn't play the drums.

My two cents...

Less Letterman. He looked like he was going to fall over backwards when talking to Paul & Ringo. http://www.cbs.com/shows/the-night-that-changed-america/video/1yuGKQ4OfvfeREdowlqAphRzWKshuOGx/the-beatles-the-night-that-changed-america-a-grammy-salute-david-letterman-interviews-paul-and-ringo/ and they guy cannot do an interview to save his life.

Alicia Keyes is blazing hot!

Somebody tell Katy Perry that Don Ho's wife wants her dress back.

Who was the drummer?
Peter Frampton looked like he was having a lot of fun.

Who was the guitarist with the beard? Did he have a Beatles connection?

Alicia Keyes is blazing hot!!

As mentioned, too many crowd shots. Especially Tom Hanks and his SO.

I don't get all the love for Stevie Wonder

Who was the awful singer with beat up Drill Sergeant hat?

Ringo who looked like a kid in a candy store cannot dance a lick but he can work an audience

Did I mention Alicia keyes is pretty?

If you're talking about the guy who was playing guitar for Ringo, it's Steve Lukather from Toto. One of the best there is.

I thought the two best songs of the night involved Jeff Lynne. He should have his own show where guests come on and cover Beatles songs with him. I'd watch that.

Bumping the old thread to see what everyone thought about the tribute.

I thought it was very well done. A couple of thoughts:

1. Paul was on fire. Adrenaline or something. He picked some difficult ones to sing, especially at his age. When he hit that high note in I Saw Her Standing There (her hand in MIN-----NNNNNEEEEEEEE!!!!), that was awesome. Pepper and Birthday was great. When he stopped Get Back, then started it up again, that was AWESOME!! He did great on Hey Jude also. The last 5 years or so, I've noticed a sharp drop in his voice. You can hardly blame him at 72 years old. I thought he turned back the clock, at least, 10 years.

2. Ringo is goofy, but damn he's infectious. Something about him. You can't help but smile. Maybe because he's the most human of the Beatles. Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison were so otherworldly talented. Maybe it makes us happy that an everyman could be in the Beatles and maybe, just maybe, it makes us think we could be in the Beatles. Just a thought.

3. Yellow Submarine. I'm not sure if you noticed, but they sampled John's "Full speed ahead Mr Captain, full speed ahead" and such. I listened to it 5 times. It's from Revolver. Trust me. Great touch to have John singing along, at least, for one song.

4. Hey Bulldog was my favorite performance of the night. Grohl's little girl was adorable, and I love that song. That was an obscure one for the true Beatles fan. The Beatles sounded like they had a ball making that one and it shows on the record. According to Geoff Emerick's book, he believes this song, only days before they left for India, might have been the last time the Beatles were truly happy together in the studio. After India, it all changed. Great music continued to come out of them, but they didn't seem to enjoy being with each other any more.

5. I was a bit nervous when I saw the performers list, but I have to say, they were good. I wasn't worried about Jeff Lynne, Joe Walsh, Dave Grohl, those kind of guys because they are older and I've seen them do Beatles and they do a good job. I was worried about Katy Perry most. Not that I mind Katy Perry, but I could just see like a techno beat put to She Loves You with like circus performers or something. She did Yesterday well. It was in her own style, yet it was respectful of the original. Also, Alicia Keys didn't oversing too much. John Legend was outstanding. That kid that did In My Life was great also. Pharrell was also great on Here Comes The Sun. Glad they left the stupid robots out. On the other hand, I wasn't thrilled with Annie Lennox on Fool On The Hill. I'm not a huge fan of her anyway. It wasn't horrible or anything, but it was my least favorite performance of the night.

6. Man is Something a powerful song. Walsh nailed it and Dhani Harrison looks so much like his Dad it's scary. You could have put Dhani up there with Sean and Paul and Ringo and you would swear that John and George stayed the same age and the other two got old. Crazy. Sean looks a lot like John with the beard. Not as much without the beard.

7. I liked the interviews with Paul and Ringo. When Dave said that the playlist was All My Loving, Till There Was You, I Saw Her Standing There, She Loves You and I Want To Hold Your Hand and he said "for most bands, that's a career", man is he correct. How many bands/artists have EXTREMELY successful careers with 4 or 5 big songs?? That was just like year 1 for the Beatles. Staggering. Think about the show on Sunday night. Most of those songs are VERY well known songs. Some of them were #1 hits and most of them were hits somewhere around the world. They barely scratched the surface. Nothing from A Hard Day's Night. One song from Rubber Soul. One song from Revolver.

8. I wonder if there are songs that Paul will not sing?? I'm thinking about She Loves You and I Want To Hold Your Hand. I have NEVER heard him do those songs. Those songs were probably primarily John songs, but I've heard him do Please Please Me, which was, for sure, a John song. Are those two songs like off limits in his mind because those were the songs that really took the Beatles to the stratosphere and they are SO associated with the Beatles that he feels like he can't do them without John and George?? If I could ask Paul any question, I would ask him that one.

That's it. Sorry it was long. Please post your thoughts...

I was thinking the same thing. His voice was absolutely awesome. I can't think of another old time singer that can still hit the same notes with the same amount of power that he did that night. I was a little nervous watching him as my mind was anticipating certain difficult notes that were approaching. He nailed every one.

No apologies, please! Great write up. I watched with my 14 year old who was just full of questions throughout. Even though I had it DVR'd- stopping to explain things was cool on one hand, but took a lot away from it on the other. Looking forward to kicking back and watching it uninterrupted.

The show did send me scrambling for more Beatles reading while at "work." Only seven when the Beatles did their Sullivan gig, I became a Paul fan because he just always looked like he was having a ball. Something infectious about his smile to me at that age. Funny thing- while I always knew that Sir Paul didn't suffer for lack of a healthy ego- I found a couple of quotes on Wiki regarding their relationships as Beatles by his mates that was pretty telling.

George:

Discussing his relationship with McCartney, Harrison said, "Paul would always help along when you'd done his ten songs—then when he got 'round to doing one of my songs, he would help. It was silly. It was very selfish, actually ... There were a lot of tracks, though, where I played bass ... because what Paul would do—if he'd written a song, he'd learn all the parts for Paul and then come in the studio and say (sometimes he was very difficult): "Do this". He'd never give you the opportunity to come out with something."
Ringo:

Starr once described McCartney as "pleasantly insincere." :lmao:

As Apple's Peter Brown recalled, "it was a poorly kept secret among Beatle intimates that after Ringo left the studio Paul would often dub in the drum tracks himself ... [starr] would pretend not to notice". In August 1968, the two got into an argument over McCartney's critique of Starr's drum part for "Back in the U.S.S.R.", which contributed to Starr temporarily leaving the band. When Starr returned in September, he found bouquets of flowers on his drum kit. Starr commented on working with McCartney: "Paul is the greatest bass player in the world. But he is also very determined ... [to] get his own way ... [thus] musical disagreements inevitably arose from time to time."

Start with Innervisions and SOngs in the Key of Life.
He's horrible
I have to say, if your intent is to take contrary dooshiness shtick to a whole 'nother level- congratulations.
Because i dont like Stevie wonders music?? Seriously? lol
Yeah, that's "all."
I thought so...
It's about your "body of work" in general. I don't know if I've ever seen so much packed into so few posts. Again- congrats.

Revolution #9??? Joking!

Paul has done "She Loves You" live before, I am not sure about "I Want to Hold Your Hand". I don't consider each of those to be Lennon or McCartney, I am pretty sure those two were written together "eyeball to eyeball".

There are other Beatles tunes (some exclusively written by him) that he's not done live. Not sure why but it would be an interesting question to ask.

The big Eurythmics reunion was pretty meh. Annie Lennox has always been overrated IMO. Dave Stewart is a fine writer and producer but his contribution to the number consisted of strumming an unheard acoustic. Andrew Ridgely would have brought more to a reunion of Wham!. The producers could have just told Jeff Lynne to take the stage wearing a hat and nobody would have noticed the difference.

I think this was true of both John and Paul, mainly because they just didn't think of him as an equal early on. It wasn't until later that George blossomed as a songwriter and by then the rot had already setting in. That said, Paul helped out on George's later recordings a lot more than John did.

John's contributions on many of George's later songs were, for the most part, minimal if he participated at all.

I'm an hour behind... Annie did a great job!
No doubt. She hasn't aged a bit from the 80's. wait till you see Joe Walsh.
I was amazed how good Walsh looked and sounded. When I'd hear him on Howard Stern 20 years ago, I wasn't sure he'd live another 5 years.
When Joe Walsh opened his mouth to sing his verse, I was expecting a total trainwreck. I agree, he sounded way better than I could have imagined.

Joe is really only a trainwreck when he speaks.
