Bumping the old thread to see what everyone thought about the tribute.
I thought it was very well done. A couple of thoughts:
1. Paul was on fire. Adrenaline or something. He picked some difficult ones to sing, especially at his age. When he hit that high note in I Saw Her Standing There (her hand in MIN-----NNNNNEEEEEEEE!!!!), that was awesome. Pepper and Birthday was great. When he stopped Get Back, then started it up again, that was AWESOME!! He did great on Hey Jude also. The last 5 years or so, I've noticed a sharp drop in his voice. You can hardly blame him at 72 years old. I thought he turned back the clock, at least, 10 years.
2. Ringo is goofy, but damn he's infectious. Something about him. You can't help but smile. Maybe because he's the most human of the Beatles. Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison were so otherworldly talented. Maybe it makes us happy that an everyman could be in the Beatles and maybe, just maybe, it makes us think we could be in the Beatles. Just a thought.
3. Yellow Submarine. I'm not sure if you noticed, but they sampled John's "Full speed ahead Mr Captain, full speed ahead" and such. I listened to it 5 times. It's from Revolver. Trust me. Great touch to have John singing along, at least, for one song.
4. Hey Bulldog was my favorite performance of the night. Grohl's little girl was adorable, and I love that song. That was an obscure one for the true Beatles fan. The Beatles sounded like they had a ball making that one and it shows on the record. According to Geoff Emerick's book, he believes this song, only days before they left for India, might have been the last time the Beatles were truly happy together in the studio. After India, it all changed. Great music continued to come out of them, but they didn't seem to enjoy being with each other any more.
5. I was a bit nervous when I saw the performers list, but I have to say, they were good. I wasn't worried about Jeff Lynne, Joe Walsh, Dave Grohl, those kind of guys because they are older and I've seen them do Beatles and they do a good job. I was worried about Katy Perry most. Not that I mind Katy Perry, but I could just see like a techno beat put to She Loves You with like circus performers or something. She did Yesterday well. It was in her own style, yet it was respectful of the original. Also, Alicia Keys didn't oversing too much. John Legend was outstanding. That kid that did In My Life was great also. Pharrell was also great on Here Comes The Sun. Glad they left the stupid robots out. On the other hand, I wasn't thrilled with Annie Lennox on Fool On The Hill. I'm not a huge fan of her anyway. It wasn't horrible or anything, but it was my least favorite performance of the night.
6. Man is Something a powerful song. Walsh nailed it and Dhani Harrison looks so much like his Dad it's scary. You could have put Dhani up there with Sean and Paul and Ringo and you would swear that John and George stayed the same age and the other two got old. Crazy. Sean looks a lot like John with the beard. Not as much without the beard.
7. I liked the interviews with Paul and Ringo. When Dave said that the playlist was All My Loving, Till There Was You, I Saw Her Standing There, She Loves You and I Want To Hold Your Hand and he said "for most bands, that's a career", man is he correct. How many bands/artists have EXTREMELY successful careers with 4 or 5 big songs?? That was just like year 1 for the Beatles. Staggering. Think about the show on Sunday night. Most of those songs are VERY well known songs. Some of them were #1 hits and most of them were hits somewhere around the world. They barely scratched the surface. Nothing from A Hard Day's Night. One song from Rubber Soul. One song from Revolver.
8. I wonder if there are songs that Paul will not sing?? I'm thinking about She Loves You and I Want To Hold Your Hand. I have NEVER heard him do those songs. Those songs were probably primarily John songs, but I've heard him do Please Please Me, which was, for sure, a John song. Are those two songs like off limits in his mind because those were the songs that really took the Beatles to the stratosphere and they are SO associated with the Beatles that he feels like he can't do them without John and George?? If I could ask Paul any question, I would ask him that one.
That's it. Sorry it was long. Please post your thoughts...
