The Bengals will shut down your #1 WR (1 Viewer)

So far the Bengals have held the opposition's #1 WR to a paltry:

5 receptions and 45 yards, no touchdowns.

B. Marshall 4-27

Jennings 0-0

Holmes 1-18

B. Edwards 0-0

Mason 0-0

Andre Johnson 8-135

I havnt been able to analyze how they've been able to do it (hopefully someone has the insight) but its something you will want to note when submitting your lineups next week.

The quick answer is leon hall, the real answer is the team finally is getting some play from the dline.

Is this per game or for the season?? If its 5 for 45 per game i'd say the Jennings 0 in week 2 bends the stats a little. Either way they have shown their D is much better this year, 1 play away from 3-0

Sorry, I edited my first post to be more specific. That's total for the year.

Are we automatically assuming that the highest guy drafted on each team is the team's "#1 receiver?" Because looking at the game logs, you could make a pretty convincing case that two of those guys are the #2 receiver on their own teams, and you could make a pretty solid case that the third guy (Marshall) was an afterthought in Denver's week 1 gameplan.

Ward was Pittsburgh's #1 WR last season, but Holmes led the team in targets, receptions, yards & TDs for the first 2 games.A case could be made that Marshall was 1A for week 1 (because he had just rejoined the Broncos). But he was clearly the team's #1 WR heading into training camp.

Couldn't help but remember this thread when I noticed Edwards had zero catches yesterday, could be some serious truth to it.

Pretty sure Leon Hall covered Massaquoi for most of the game.
I don't know the exact answer but several posts above suggest that it is Jonathan Joseph rather than Hall who has been covering the #1s.
Yeah I see some people above say Hall and other says Joseph. All Im saying is that yesterday Hall was getting smoked by a rookie all game.

I'm pretty sure teams treat Greg Jennings as the #1 threat on the Packers.

On all the slow motion re-plays on Massaquoi that showed the whole film it was easy to see why Braylon didn't get the ball and was shut down.

Number 1 and most importantly he sucks, but after we get past that, it looked like they had a man on him with help from both the underneath and over the top as well. They simply handed him off once he left their area. I am surely explaining it poorly but I think you get it.

WR#16 WR#30WR#18WR#73If one of those guys is your WR1 you've got bigger problems this season.

Maybe they're that low BECAUSE they went up against Cincinnati? :goodposting:eta - except Braylon - he sucks regardless

Jennings was the fourth-ranked WR in standard scoring leagues last season and was projected to be a Top 10 WR this season by just about everyone in the fantasy industry. It's hardly a reach to assume he would be the No. 1 WR on a lot of fantasy teams this season. He may not be performing like one to date but given his preseason ranking he probably was drafted as a WR1 in a lot of drafts.

Good Catch.... FO has the Bangles as the number one defense against #1 WRs right now:

#1 - CIN Passes Attempted per game: 6.2, Yards/Game: 9.7

#2 - NYG Passes Attempted/Game: 6.1, Yards/Game: 9.6

#3 - PHI Passes Attempted/Game: 6.0. Yards/Game: 46.1

#4 - NO Passes Attempted/Game: 9.7, Yards/Game: 61

#5 - SD Passes Attempted/Game: 5.8, Yards/Game: 46.3

It should be noted that they have Cincy ranked #32 against #2 WRs.

Also this does not include week 4 stats.

Leon Hall always plays defensive right

Jon Joe always plays defensive left

They're both top notch corners, but they don't play WR shutdown like Revis.

Uggggggggggghhh, why dont I listen to my own topics. Cincy secondary is legit.
you created this GREAT thread and then you STARTED Mason??shame on you . . .
I know, it's probably one of the worst fantasy football moves I have made. Oh well...And I updated the first post. Derrick Mason 0-0

Derrick Mason0 catches for 0 yards1 FAT LOSS
That makes 3 out of 5 games where the Bengals have held the opposing team's #1 WR to 0 catches. Wow!T&P to Coach Zimmer too - tough week, but hopefully the W and the support of the team help him get through it - he's completely turned around the D and has to get a ton of credit for the entire team's success to date

other than greg jennings, i'm not overly impressed there.

brandon marshall was coming off a suspension and had an injured QB. santonio holmes is not the no. 1 WR in pittsburgh; a guy named hines ward is - what did he do?

i think this week will be an interesting indication of just how good the bengals d is going to be. andre johnson is, IMO, the best WR in the nfl. schaub is a very good QB.

Starting Andre? It was noted earlier in the thread, but it looks like the Bengal's D is blanketing the other team's WR1 with help underneath and over the top and then trusting either Jonathon Joseph or Leon Hall with one on one coverage of the WR2. Hence their rankings against WR1s and WR2s of 1st and 32nd respectively.

If they cover you with three guys it doesn't necessarily matter if you're the best WR in the NFL . A good QB won't be throwing into triple coverage regardless of who the WR is, so having a good QB would actually be a negative in this scenario, which would explain the lack of targets for the WR1s the Bengals have faced so far this season.

This would explain completely shutting out 3 WR1s and holding the rest of them to very little.

No way I bench AJ. CIN hasn't faced an AJ. Brandon Marshall is close but it was game #1 so I throw it out.

DEN Marshall/Royal it opened up Stokely to score the long one 1/87/1TD and Orton passed for 247/1/0.

GB Jennings got shut down but Driver went for 6/99/1TD and Rodgers 261/1/0.

PIT Holmes got shut down but Ward got 4/82 and WR Wallace got 7/102 and Ben passed for 276/1/1.

CLE Edwards got shut down but Massaquoi got 8/148 and Anderson passed for 269/1/1.

BAL Mason got shut down but I'm not sure he even played or if he was injured from the previous game. BAL TE Heap got 7/41 and RB Rice got 7/74/1TD receiving stats. QB Flacco was only 186/1/2int but 22 of 31.

CIN shuts the door but opens a window to the other WR's, TE and RB's and I don't think they've proven that they can shut a door with the ability of Andre Johnson yet. I expect AJ to be less than typical but I expect RB Slaton to put up good numbers as well as TE Daniels.

Not to mention Sweed got wide open in the end zone for what would have been another TD but dropped the ball.

several posters are throwing in facts that have NOTHING to do with the thread title . . .

Sweed is a #3 or #4 . . . what he would have done is irrelevant . . .
