The Best thing about Summer.. (1 Viewer)

Rhubarb is the weed that just won't die.

When I moved into my house last August there was your standard aluminum shed in the backyard. It was dented, and rusty and the doors wouldn't slide right anymore....basically it had been there for quite awhile (15+ years). Beside the shed was a rhubarb 'weed'.

This summer decided I wanted a new shed because the old one was in such horrid contition. So we ripped it down. The new shed was going at the back of the property so we decided to put a flower garden where the old one once stood. Which meant an eviction notice for the rhubarb.

Well the roots of this 'weed' didn't go straight down from where the plant grew. I dug, and dug, and dug, moving sideways foot after foot, after foot. Until finally I had found what I considered the end of the root system. I was standing in the center of what would have been the old shed. That damn weed must have had a 5 foot long central root that was as wide around as a DVD. 15+ years ago someone dropped an f'in shed on that weed and it refused to die!

And no, I didn't take that weed and make a disgusting pie out of it. I took the carcass and threw it on my driveway where it baked in the sun for the next week.

May you burn in Hell for such a crime, sir.

:goodposting: Can't grow it down here no matter how hard we try :hot:

Eating grocery store bought stalks right now... kinda rubbery and fiberous compared to the old garden fresh stuff, but a treat nonetheless

Why would you put rhubarb next to bikinis and miniskirts? I can think of a lot better things to do with them.

how are you guys eating it? My grandma made one hell of a rhubarb pie, bit I don't think I've seen it any other way.

My two year old daughter and I entered our pet hermit crab into a race at Sunset Beach yesterday.

Top that.

Pretty much the epitome of a summer day - silly, meaningless, fun.

strawberry rhubarb pie
Never had that in my life. Highly recommended? Anyone got an old family recipe?
Yeah, it's great. Mom used to make the best. Sorry, no recipe here though. I've found even store bought is pretty decent though.
I LOVE me some strawberry rhubarb pie. I can try to dig our recipe up a bit later.

Sweet Corn, Peaches...hell, just about all produce right now.
 Fresh corn on the cob is one of life's great, underrated joys. Pounding some as I type. :yes:Grilling outside every night is a close second.
I went with the g/f to the farm who provides us with a box of produce every week. We were allowed to just go around and pick or eat whatever we wanted. We found ourselves walking through fields of corn just picking them and eating them right there. It was fantastic! I never did that before. It wasn't that different from cooked corn. At first I looked at my g/f doing it and was like  . I'm glad I tried it.But, to me, the best thing about summer is driving my convertible to a minor league/independent baseball game on a hot summer evening and having a few beers as the sun sets.

Swimming

Fresh produce in general that doesn't have to be shipped in from wherever

Tomatoes from my garden that consists only of tomato plants

Cardinal Baseball

The heat finally breaking late in the day so you can set on the porch.

Cicadas.

Snaking a plastic worm over a lilly pad and having a bass just explode on it.

Jug fishing for flatheads.

Burnt hot dogs.

Catching a foul ball at the BB game.

A nice bowl of cukes and onions.

Summer dresses

Porch parties

Getting drunk in the middle of the afternoon, and not feeling bad about if cuz you're outside having fun in the sun

I like this guy. :)

Top ten, roughly in order...

short shorts

short skirts

bikinis

sundresses

these shirts (I guess they're called cami's)

tans

drinking beer at the pool

pool volleyball

floating the river

boating

Cold beer or wine outside, where a cold one has more of an impact than just the taste and the buzz, while luxuriating in the heat that's not so bad since all you're doing it sipping, listening to the cecada's, and smelling the aromatics from the grass, weeds and flowers as they make a last gasp at procreation before the warmth fades. Watching the vibrant colors of a sunset that you normally don't see in the colder months from the front seat of your car as you sit in traffic. Or the smell of a grill wafting through the neighborhood causing you to give the neighbor a wave and ask what he's cooking while the ball game plays in the background. Ahhhhh.... Summer.

But give me fall any day over Summer?!?!
