The Bill Simmons Podcast (3 Viewers)

Yea I couldn't tell if he didn't know Lovie was still in Tampa or if they would improve because he's not.

I understand meritocracy is difficult to measure or achieve in arts/entertainment, but whatever meritocracy is here, "Podcast host and guest Joe House" is the opposite of that.  Turned it off when I heard his voice with all the speed I used on old BS Reports when the phone would ring and answered, "Complex Litigation, this is John..."
Lol

I get they are bros but who is looking to listen to house on anything. Bizarre.

That being said, I AM kind of intrigued by his Rex Ryan first coach fired +2500 bet (wrong thread, but still).

I love golf.  I love gambling.  I gave House's golf betting podcast 2 listens.  Garbage.
pretty sure that is when he started shouting CAPITAL ALLOCATION like a deaf kid with tourettes

house seems like a nice dude, but the most offputting thing about him is you can tell from the way he talks that he thinks he's really smart.  at least with this stuff, he has no clue.

Exactly right on all counts. It seems like once he got "his own" nepotist podcast all of his 47 year old frat boy dbag traits came to the fore. Or maybe with more minutes of House they became more obvious.

I flipped on HBO and realized Any Given Wednesday was on. I caught the tail end of Simmons defending David Ortiz from steroid allegations in a produced piece, cutting to a segment of him bashing Goodell with the head of the NFLPA :lmao: . Literally 45 seconds total and I'm out.

listening to the 'guess the lines' pod now.

Simmons: I like to gamble in September based on what I think is going to happen

we're off to a strong start folks

Not sure where this anti-House stuff is coming from...he's easily the best not-Sal guest Bill has right now.

the show needs a gimmick otherwise it's going to die. What if he had all of his guests on at the same time, and they got progressively drunk?

I like House a lot generally, I just wish he'd grow a spine and disagree with Simmons once in awhile.

The guy is literally a nobody and being his friend leads to being flown out to LA at times, awesome meals, and now a sponsored podcast. I'd be doing everything shy of blowing him.

Got halfway through the Sal Week One lines podcast before getting to work. Maybe it's my ADHD kicking in, but I use to be able to listen to the "pick the line" podcast and they seemed lazer focused and great info and entertainment, now I find myself listening and having to back up because I don't even remember which game they are rambling about.

Still the best podcast on the BSPN.

The only thing that sucks about the Sal podcasts going up on Thursday is that I used to like to play along with them.  I'd come into work Monday AM and look at the next week's schedule and make my own picks, then compare them to Bill & Sal's.  Now, that's basically impossible, I can't avoid the lines until Thursday.

I usually listen at work so I'll get busy doing something and realize I zoned out for the last 15 mins and need to rewind.  Probably takes me ~1/3rd of a work day to get through an hour long podcast.  If I'm listening at home or in the car it's a little easier, but I definitely find myself zoning out here and there.

It is horrible timing (TV show getting in the way again).  Impossible to avoid the lines until Thursday.

Agree all around.   And not all of us can carve out an hour on Thursday during the day.   When it was released earlier in the week, I would be able to make sure I got through it before the Thursday night game.  That will no longer happen.

HBO offers Simmons 3/4 of the money he's owed if he goes away. WHO SAYS NO???!?!?!

There was some semi-interesting stuff in the Jim Miller podcast about Simmons and ESPN that I didn't know before.  But now I've forgotten it.

you're welcome.

He used to reject all editorial changes to his columns at ESPN?

I have a feeling that both House and Sal realized 10-20 years ago that there was no point in ever disagreeing with anything Simmons says. Just mumble "Uh huh" and move on to the next topic. Otherwise you're stuck listening to Simmons drone on and on for 30 minutes defending whatever stupid Patriots/Celtics/Red Sox/Reality TV point he was trying to make.

Bill: "The Patriots have a realistic chance to go 14-2..."

Sal: "Uh-huh. So, next up is the Packers-Lions game..."

Good point.

The Ringer has posted two widely circulated pieces in the last few days-- this one about Justin Blackmon, and this one about they NFL's age problem.

maybe the site is hitting its stride

Hmmm...two pieces that probably would have fit in nicely on Grantland. I'll check them out.

I noticed you didn't link the article I saw being pushed the other day on the "Definitive Rank of 'Jacks'".

It's almost like staying in your lane works.

good to have cousin sal back, he delivers.

Haven't listened to anything with Simmons since the last Cousin Sal last year.. he's just not the same since a few years ago.

but Cousin Sal is still great!

So first they move the Sal podcast to Wednesdays when everyone already knows the lines.  Now they tape it in front of an audience?  So distracting.  I might be close to out
Oooof. Seriously? I was looking forward to listening to this on the commute home. I've always been a Simmons guy but his show is garbage and the Ringer is garbage. If he ruins the Sal podcast too it's time to close up shop.

An audience?! Hahaha...

I listened to Friday's and was disappointed there wasn't much NFL talk.

I also realized why Rembert is a writer. ####in guy takes 10 minutes to say a complete sentence.

I was thinking the same thing.  Simmons had to be dying trying not to interrupt him every time he launched into one of those 30-40 second, 2 sentence answers.

So write your picks down Monday AM as usual

Simmons tweeted this yesterday -- " PS: we had a small audience there for the new Sal pod b/c we were experimenting w/ some video stuff... it's a one-time thing I promise! "

I got through most of it on my commute in today...he started by saying that the Packers lost last week and also never gave his line for the first game they talked about.

The live audience was mildly annoying and talking with Babydoll Dixon was extremely annoying. Disappointed the path this show is taking. Hope it's only a one time thing.

The audience didn't end up bothering me but when his HBO show inevitably gets canceled, he might look back and regret mailing in his podcast with where the industry is going. There are a lot of people doing some very cool/innovate things and he's just doing what is easy for him. I'm sure his download numbers are still very good because of the audience he started with and everyone subscribes, but I'd think his referral stuff will start to fall off as people slow down their listening. I'm 33 and started reading/listening to him when I was in college and he was basically my age now. Are 23 year old guys listening to him?

Not that he likely cares. Guy is making millions one way or the other but I'm really interested in how things will look for him in 5 years. The best thing he has going for him, as far as the future, is probably the rest of the shows he has on his network.
