The Bill Simmons Podcast (2 Viewers)

I'm watching live tonight just so all opinions can be my own, not colored by Twitter or others.

That steroids monologue was horrendous. Sitting on the arm of a chair for it wasn't a good idea

holy #### he actually put Gladwell on this thing. Who is this appealing to?

The interview segments are pretty good, I think this show is better than the first one. I'm not saying it is a good show by any means but not a total train wreck.

Jesus dude shake the guy's hand when it's offered and then do your teleprompter read. It's a pre-taped show...do another shot if you have to.

and Game of Thrones segment is PAINFUL.  Let other people be funny Bill.  That what this show needs.  Bill interviews, other people be funny.  Hader, Barkley were great.

Bad bad bad bad

Juuuuuuuuuuust a little too obsessed about another man's crank, or lack there of.

Alright, I like Simmons, and one of his last apologists, but I'm gonna tap out here.

Other than the Hader interview, that was turrible. The Hader funny stuff could have been done on a podcast and been just as funny.

I'm out on the show and the ringer.  And apparently his podcasts are becoming more and more infrequent in spite of the show and the site.  ####### awful.

they can't even bring "Food News" back on the pod channel and that was the best pod Grantland had going. Litman is really good discussing unimportant stuff, and terrible trying to break down the NBA and stuff.

Gawd. Hate to say it as a guy from the same area as Simmons who grew up on the internet with him, but I can't do this anymore.

Wake me up when the cousin Sal pods start back up.

I have to imagine putting together a tv show sucks up a LOT of time. I mean, those peeheading jokes aren't going to write themselves. Can't think he's going to have time to podcast and wrote columns while he's doing this, which is a shame, but then again the guy got a crack at an HBO show. Can't blame him for trying.

I 100% agree with you. I know it's childish to #### on the podcast in spite of the show.  Just sucks it turned into this.

"blink" and you'll miss it, because it's not coming back for another season (also from twitter)

twitter really has cornered the market on gladwell jokes

I haven't read much on The Ringer yet, mostly because not much had interested me. But I was enjoying this article on Sriracha and I 100% get what people were saying about articles seemingly ending without notice. I kept scrolling expecting at least a few more paragraphs and encountered a brick wall and a bunch of other links.

I thought it was just me. I was reading the article about Mario yesterday and just as it started to get interesting, it was over.

I caught the Hader interview and thought he was a great guest.  Simmons' note cards were annoying though.  You're a professional talk show host and should be able to conduct a short interview without having to read questions off of a sheet.

The best talk show hosts make interviews sound like conversations.  Simmons' questions were fine but there was very little flow between them.  I missed the beginning of the segment so my apologies to the great man if 2 Bills/20 questions with was the premise of the interview.

The Game of Thrones closer was painfully unfunny.

On the plus side, I thought the Jim Gray piece on the Ringer was excellent.

I've heard Simmons say a few times before that he doesn't use any notes for his podcast. Wonder if the cards are more to give him something to do with his hands and cover up nerves/being uncomfortable on TV.

They're not working

I haven't watched it yet, so if he's doing this then forget I said anything, but he should scrap the one-on-one and have a multiple person interview ala Graham Norton. Barkley/Affleck/Simmons would be a cool interview I think.

He had Cuban and Gladwell together.

He said on the podcast that the first 10 episodes are being shot with varying formats - they're testing different things out and trying to figure out what the show is going to be.  He didn't mention if that included "on the air" or not.  But expect to see a number of different experiments if this carries on.

Last night had one segment with two folks (Cuban & Art Garfunkel's kid) and one segment with just one guest (Hader).

I will say it is not as bad as Joe Buck Live.

Isn't that what you do test episodes for?

Yeah.... I don't know, maybe they're looking at reaction on social media/blogs/etc. to get feedback on different segments from the gen pop.  Just a guess.

Looking forward to the one where Simmons sits behind a wall.

I'm thinking they should have him hanging by his knees on a trapeze, swinging back and forth delivering the monologue while all the people who normally laugh in the background every time a guest says something funny all fire eggs at him.

Ok, now I know this has to be intentional. A new writing style has been founded in LA and it just hasn't made it's way to the east coast yet.

Reading an article on Lenny Dykstra and Ron Darling, here's how it ends:

I tell Lenny I’ll call him back in five minutes. When I do, he’s still on the other line.

I don't think it's realistic to put the time and money into fully-finished test episodes.  I've heard multiple showrunners and producers of scripted TV say before that they wished they could have done a 10-episode test run because they learned so much in that first group.

I liked the Gladwell/Cuban segment. Wish it were longer.

And the Bill Hader questions were good.

Simmons is probably the worst part of the show, but he will get better.

I thought tests were normal for live shows.  We were founding sponsors of a radio show on NPR and they recorded at least 20 test shows before going live.

My assumption is that a radio show is a lot cheaper to produce than a tv show.  They certainly do test shows for tv, but multiple fully-finished and produced tv shows is not easy or cheap.

I think, anyway.

The semi-weird thing is that it's not like this is simmons' first rodeo with tv. It's the third shows he has been involved with.  And he obviously has a lot of knowledge and opinions about what makes a good show.

this show just has no energy and I don't feel like it has a great flow.   The interspersed half-monologues/half- video segments with the interview segments just kind of happen.  Compare to bill maher ( which feels formulaic after watching a lot of eps, but still) which has a clear pattern of introducing the show and hit the monologue to connect directly with the audience, then leading the viewer through each segment.   AGW just feels sort of amorphous and low-energy and not an event at all.  Though maybe they are looking more for it to be like clips that are stand-alone pieces, since that is how so much content is consumed nowadays.

I'd like to see a pti-style.  A rundown of sports and pop culture with the guest.

That said.  This is not going to work.  Podcasting is where its at for Simmons.  Once you are dialed in to podcasts u can never listen to sports radio again.  Simmons excels because he has some celebrity access.  He is an insider.  More then just sports content.
