The Bill Simmons Podcast (1 Viewer)

As much as people (me included) crap on Simmons for being a chode, this is really the first instance I can remember of someone who has worked for him having a problem with him. I just finished "All the Pieces Matter" by Jonathan Abrams about The Wire and Simmons gets a major credit in the acknowledgments. Even though he can come across very childish at times, there's no doubt that the people who have come up under him credit him for so much of their success.

His NBA Finals show for HBO has been promoted on my Twitter feed all day. I can't imagine ever wanting to watch a "behind the scenes" about a 4 game sweep involving two teams that have played for what feels like 14 years in a row.

I've never really heard Kyrie talk before, but that was a great interview - podcasts can be so great sometimes, and both guys seemed so comfortable in the conversation.

The NBA mock draft episode was brutal, I couldn't handle it for very long.

Kyrie was awesome. I especially enjoyed his love of CNBC.

That Tjarks dude sounds like the snitch from a straight-to-DVD Prohibition-era mob movie.

One of my favorite things every year. I remember laughing out loud when I saw him on their draft coverage the first time he did it.
He said something recently about how teams keep screwing up and taking players who are obviously going to be bad, and that they just can't seem to get it right!

Uh:

7:43 — The Bobcats take … Michael Kidd-Gilchrist? WOW! They did the right thing?!?!?!? We’re stunned! I can’t stop using exclamation points! Probably not a good sign for the MJ era when it’s shocking that the team picking second took the second-best player. Great pick. I couldn’t be a bigger MKG fan, as explained here. As Bilas gushes, “You can’t teach relentless.” He’s going to be a killer pro. Think Scottie Pippen crossed with Gerald Wallace, only if they had a hyphen and played every game like it was Game 7 of the Finals.2
(Note that’s too important for a footnote: I thought the Cavs should have taken Thomas Robinson, but they obviously passed after spending last year’s no. 4 overall pick on Tristan Thompson — same position as Robinson, not as good — so instead of stashing potential stud Jonas Valanciunas abroad in 2011 and picking Robinson this year, they spent two top-five picks on the poor man’s Robinson and Syracuse’s sixth man. The lesson, as always: God hates Cleveland.)
8:05 — Questions asked in my living room after Portland’s pick: “What conference is Damian Lillard from again?” … “Has any top-10 pick ever had more highlights that happened against white people?” … “Is it WEE-ber or Weh-ber?” … “Has anyone ever picked a backup point guard this high?” … “Did they just pick Jerryd Bayless again or am I crazy?” … “Are these highlights from Division I games?”

(Answers: Big Sky … no … “Weh-ber” “Wee-ber” … yes, Jonny Flynn in 2009 … it’s unclear … yes.)

8:09 — Tom Penn just threw a slew of advanced points-per-possession stats at us, trying to make the case that it wasn’t completely ludicrous for a two-time Big Sky MVP to go sixth in the entire NBA draft. It’s almost like the ESPN producers said, “What segment could we create that appeals to 125 hard-core basketball bloggers and goes over the heads of literally everyone else watching this telecast?” Here were the points-per-possession stats (I made two of them up) …

Own Pick-and-Roll Offense 1.14 (91st percentile in Division I)
Passes Out of Pick-and-Roll: 1.04 (72nd percentile in Division I)
Against White Dudes Who Walked Onto Their Teams: 4.32 (100th percentile in Division I)
Spot-up Shooting: 1.39 (96th percentile in Division I)
Against Guys Who Walk With a Slight Limp: 3.23 (100th percentile in Division I)
8:28 — New Orleans grabs Austin Rivers at no. 10; Stern decides against overruling it. Nice pick. (I’m in the “Rivers will be good” camp — he’s too confident to be a bust.)
9:05 — Houston takes Royce White.

9:05 — Stomach punch. That was my guy.

9:05 — Still keeled over.

I love "doesn't watch college Bill Simmons" going into his cocoon and emerging as "NBA Draft expert Bill Simmons."
I can't wait till one day before the NFL season when he stops posting NBA podcasts and posts a Cousin Sal podcast in which they discuss the NFL for about 15 minutes in and around Simmons comparing NFL players and teams to NBA players and teams and generally looking forward to the NBA season.  That's gonna be awesome.

He said something recently about how teams keep screwing up and taking players who are obviously going to be bad, and that they just can't seem to get it right!

Uh:
I actually like Simmons, but he's impressively bad at this. In his honor, I will make some sort of reference to the Celtics. Here's a video of him orgasming when the Celts took James Young.

I actually like him too.  Just get annoyed that he's become what he's become in terms of writing and podcasts.

Doesn't help that he doesn't have much access to anyone for his podcasts. Left with a lot of people around the age of 25 that he has hired.  I've heard podcasts where he is talking hoops with someone who never really saw Jordan play.  With sports talk it really shows when you don't have that knowledge bank to recall events 20+ years prior.  It's much less noticeable in sports writing where you don't need instant recall and can research topics.

Sal, House and JackO are all episodes I look forward too though.

These are funny:

How does Rubio drop to No. 4? How?!? I feel like I'm gonna pass out. I like Harden as a glue-character guy and he definitely has a good porn name. But considering the Zombies have to worry about Durant fleeing in a couple of years, wasn't it in their best interests to find him an unselfish guard who's immensely fun to play with and was put on the earth to get Durant easy baskets? Big mistake.
4:54: An anonymous Seattle reader sends this e-mail: "Thank you, OKC. You almost had the most exciting team of the NBA. -- Signed, Seattle."

Exactly. Although I like the way Harden is handling this Jones interview right now (very smooth); I like his bow tie (sharp); and I really like his retro-James Worthy beard (tremendous). He's definitely one more solid character guy for the Zombies. Logical pick. You know, except for the part where they passed on a guy with Bird-Barry-Magic-Nash-Maravich passing genes.

5:28: DeMar DeRozan goes ninth to Toronto. That pick left me cold. Should I do my impression of Jay Bilas if he were an "American Idol" judge reviewing an Adam Lambert performance? (Thinking.) Nahhhhhh. Some other time.

6:13: Jrue Holiday goes to the Sixers and, more importantly, wins the Rashard Lewis "Last Guy In The Green Room" Award. In 27 minutes per game as a freshman, Holiday averaged 8.5 points and more turnovers (3.8) than assists (3.7). On the bright side, he made 30.7 percent of his 3s. Wait, that's not good. That's your 17th pick. I'm wrapping this up soon.

Ryen Rusillo had a bit on his podcast the other day comparing NBA refereeing to picking a "franchise QB" in the first round. Either the refs have it out for your team and NFL GMs really suck at evaluating talent or both are just really, really hard to do well. I've been tossing it around in my mind ever since.

I think the same thing applies to betting on the NBA. After 5 years of almost regular betting I'm somewhere around +/- $50. IIRC you expressed a similar sentiment awhile back and I've been tossing it around ever since. Maybe it's just not worth the aggravation.
I was just saying this in the wagering thread, it's ####### hard. Even beating props. Sides, jesus. NBA sides, double jesus.

There was an ESPN writer who went into the archives of his stories and surreptitiously edited his draft  comments and predictions after-the-fact about prospects so that his write-ups appeared more accurate than they actually were. I forget his name, but he got busted.

Simmons should have considered that move. It can't be as bad as having to reread his Lillard comments.

The bolded statements seem weird together.

He just had a podcast with Kyrie. His Oakley and Durant podcasts were fantastic. Lou Adler, recently too, with his "knowledge bank" of about 60 years of NBA.

And it's the Sal/House/JackO podcasts that you most look forward too? I like those guys a lot too, but they aren't exactly high commodity high access guys.

Overall, the Ringer's podcasts are pretty solid, even if the NBA one does have a lot of kids. I'd imagine they'll get even better when the ESPN morning show gets axed and he can get Jalen back in the fold. And Lowe back would obviously be great if that could ever happen.

Not to say I know anything, just saying that this #### is, generally speaking, somewhat unknowable.
Yeah, even the great, infallible Danny Ainge tried to mortgage the future for Justise Winslow.

When the C's win a few rings, they'll have Jordan to partially thank for being too dumb to take that godfather offer so that he could draft Frank Kaminsky.

Great point here.  He's surrounded by 20 something hipsters.  I have no interest in their sports (or anything else) opinions.

I used to like House before he "arrived".  Now he's annoying.  Still do like Jacko though.

I miss Cousin Sal. Can't get into his gambling podcast for whatever reason.

The Rewatchables is a pretty great podcast imo.

If it weren’t for Boston sports, random 80s movies and wrestling, Bill Simmons would have no clue how to process the world around him. It’s literally his entire frame of reference.

Sal/House/JackO are a different animal.  Like being a fly on the wall and hearing friends passionately talk sports.  They all also do know their sports.  It's also fun to hear about their personal lives which often include celebrity stories.

Jalen was brutal.  He can stick where he is.

Lowe is one of best in business.  Often listening to Bill and 25-year-ol-college-alumnus-homer-guy talk hoops and think to myself why did I not listen to Lowe interview Arnovitz about the days' events.

I didn't say Bill doesn't ever have good guests..  Oak was great.  I didn't finish Kyrie.  Was bored.  What i mean is many commentators are not allowed to go on his show.  Bill has even started to go solo on pods which are tough to get through.

Billions recap show was good for monday morning drive to work.  Westworld too.

Looking forward to The Rewatchables.  But going to wait until I'm in the mood to watch one of the movies first.  Seen Heat a million times.  Almost ready to watch again.

Uh:
Bill all over my Twitter feed the last two days making Doncic sound like the next coming of Larry Joe, or Dirk, or Rubio.  So...unfortunately can probably write Doncic off.

Oh thank God, Simmons posted another NBA podcast.  In the last week of July.  How could we ever survive until, say....the first week of October, without hearing his thoughts on this dbag league's last 14 days?  Sigh.  One trick nbA-hole.

Listening to his podcast is optional

He had Matthew Berry on this week for the first time since he left ESPN. I always find their dynamic fascinating.

I have mixed feelings about Berry; he deserves a lot of respect as one of the fantasy OGs, and has arguably done more than anyone else to help make fantasy mainstream. But his quirks can get annoying, particularly now that he no longer has Nate Ravitz to rein him in. Too often it feels like he's self-consciously playing a character. His co-hosts either let him spout off or, at worst, roll their eyes.

Simmons, though, isn't afraid to call him out. Their podcasts have the distinct vibe of a dorky freshman desperately trying to impress the captain of the football team (not that Simmons is all that cool, but that's how Berry treats him -- and based on some of the stories they told on the most recent podcast, it's somewhat understandable, since Simmons really did boost his career at ESPN.) There are some similarities to Trump's appearances on Howard Stern back in the '90s, where Stern took advantage of Trump's neediness to get him to say increasingly outrageous things. Obviously, neither Simmons nor Berry are as fascinating characters as Stern and Trump, but the pairing does make for more interesting listening.

More important, what did Simmons' daughter have to say?

I have it on good authority from my pals in the greater Hartford area that Matthew Berry will try to scam on your lady.

Also like Stern, Simmons interrupted Berry about once every 6 sentences.  Brutal.

And I still regularly listen to Simmons, although I'm a lot more likely to just delete episodes or bail a few minutes in than I used to.  But I really found this one bad.

Hadn't heard that, but it wouldn't shock me. Berry has a whiff of that Tiger Woods "I used to be nerdy, but now I think I'm hot s##t and can get girls" insecurity (at a far smaller scale, obviously.)

The top 100 episode list was awful. The girl in charge should have been pulled off the project immediately for trying to pull all that Dawson’s a Creek stuff, not to mention the OC, and all the garbage reality shows.
