The Chargers D (1 Viewer)

I'm curious about the Chargers D this year. I've only seen them play the Packers and the Raiders...possibly two of the worst O-lines in the league. How did they look in their other preseason games? The games that I watched they looked like they have some serious speed. Merriman is a maniac. I guess I'm just wondering if they will have a good fantasy D this year, and are they a D that you want to avoid starting non-stud players against.

Decent QB/WR should still do fine.

You might wanna sit magrinal RB2/RB3 types against them. They are very hard to run on.

SD will get you a bunch of sack points in FFL this year. I wouldn't start them in tough road matchups though, considering that Rivers is very green and could cost the D field position etc.

SD has one of the best front 7s in the NFL. Just like they did last year. What they lack, or have lacked, is DBs and pass coverage. We really didn't get to see a great test for that vs Oak due to how pathetic the scheme and protection was upfront. I guess we'll see soon enough. At any rate, yes they are a very good play in FF. Should see lots of sacks as they use a confusing speed rush scheme and sacks are your surest FP.

A good passing team will give them problems. Jammer is not a number one CB and Cromartie is still learning. Forget about running on them though.

They will get sacks and probably some fumbles but INTs arent there and return tds may be scarce. Against weaker teams (Oak last night, Tenn this week) they are an excellent play

In agreement with the last two posts.

The Charger front seven is way above average but had the Raiders mixed in a little max protection and a couple of quick hitting slants or draw plays last night's game may have looked totally different.

How did they look in their other preseason games?
They dominated against the Packers, Bears, and Seahawks. I didn't see the fourth game against the Niners, but the starters didn't play in that game anyway. The Seahawks scored a TD on a short field after a turnover by the Chargers in their own territory. Other than that, nobody moved the ball or scored on the Chargers' first-team D.That said, the secondary is still largely untested.

When the starters were on the field in preseason they made it very tough on oppossing offenses. In the Seattle game starters vs. starters they shut down the Seahawks (which maybe doesn't look like much of an accomplishment after what happened Sunday), you could see Hasselbeck getting visibly frustrated on the field.

Drayton Florence looked like he's even better than he was last year. Cromartie will be a big plus that will become even better as the season goes along. McCree was a very nice addition at safety. Kiel looks like he's taken his game up a notch.

Given the pass rush I think automatically assuming the Chargers will be as susceptible to the pass as they have been the last few years is mistaken. I think they'll be improved over last year.

ETA: I also liked their zone coverage last night, they did well closing down the passing lanes in that scheme.

Yes they will be a good fantasy defense. Anything but studs will be a tough call to start against them.
