The Chris Johnson Hype machine (1 Viewer)

Checking out Michael Lombardi's daily blog at the National Football Post and noticed some more high praise:

Chris Johnson is going to be the next Marshall Faulk and all those pundits (Jaime Dukes do you like him now?) who ripped the pick might want to go back and re-evaluate.
:football: The next Marshall Faulk? Yeah, that's right.
This coming from someone who had him on par with the Jerious Norwoods and Leon Washingtons of the world?Might be time to re-evaluate.

You can't be the 'Next Marshall Faulk' unless your coach has fully bought into the idea...

"You saw this afternoon that he can carry it inside and outside, he can catch out of the backfield, he can handle screens," Titans head coach Jeff Fisher said. "I wouldn't hesitate to give him the ball in short yardage situations because he's so quick. He's a complete back. Obviously he's a little bit undersized (5-11, 200) but he makes up for it with good speed."

Poor Lendale.

Just for the heck of it...Norwood - 14 carries, 93 yards, 1 TD rushing

Johnson - 15 carries, 93 yards, 0 TDs rushing

Hmmm....

Yes, yes, yes, I know... but it's fun to play Devil's Advocate

Dont count on it, he sticks by his guns, unless 100% undeniable proof is there to prove him otherwise. I dont know if thats a good thing or bad thing, but if it causes him to take Mendenhall over CJ at this point, i think it is probably not to good.

I'm gonna go out on a small limb and say Johnson's career won't quite stack up to Faulk's when the dust settles. On the gradient of pessimism ---> realism ---> optimism you're somewhere between Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter.

I was too low on Johnson initially. I readily admit that. He wasn't on my radar for most of the college season and I didn't give him enough credit for his great combine numbers and his first round pedigree. He should've been much higher on my rookie board. However, I did draft him as my RB2 in May (http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=396649&st=50) and I have him on three of my redraft teams. I'm hardly a hater. I just don't see the little guy living up to some of this ridiculous hype. The next Faulk? Highly unlikely. He's a Dunn/Garner type of back.

So, I've had a theory that Vince Young makes quicker running backs better...one who can quickly find his running lane as a counter to the Vince Young lane that has to be manned by a LB. So...people are excited that Kerry Collins is around, but does that exactly make Chris Johnson better? I understand moving the chains more through the air, and MAYBE fewer turnovers and bad decisions...but it takes away that double running threat in the backfield that defenses have to account for. I LOVE the Bengals matchup this week, but I wonder if it's being hyped a bit too much taking this into consideration. As a CJ owner, I hope he destroys my theory, but I'm not sold that Kerry Collins handing him the ball will give him the space he could work with when VY handed him the ball, to create games like he did this past week.
They will have to actually respect the pass, I think it does nothing but help.
 How can having more defenders cheat farther away from the line of scrimmage hurt the running game? I don't agree with the Vick factor. I think his own 900 yards rushing vs. the 50-100 for a non-mobile QB is the reason why Atlanta's running game looked dominant, not the fact that the defense didn't respect the pass. I understand that the defense pays attention to Vick/Young as a runner more, but I think the fact that they ignore the passing game outweighs the running QB benefit. The NFL is all about scoring, so would you rather defend a guy who passes for 4000 yards or a guy who throws for 2000 and runs for 1000? I think the extra 1000 yards will put up more points year after year. We have seen prolific passing years equate to the highest scoring offenses in history (Manning, Brady, Culpepper, Warner, etc.), but I don't recall any poor passing teams with wonderful running QBs come anywhere close to those offenses.
Is it possible that teams don't crowd the box against a Vince Young? Due to the fact that they don't want to apply too much pressure that he can typically pretty easily escape and break big plays? They stay back, play vanilla, let a team run on them some, but don't allow the big homerun breakout of the pocket from VY??? Just another thought.
i think it is highly possiblethe first year VY ran wild, since then two things have happened:1) defenses don't stack they spy2) people have convince VY he needs to work on being a pocket passer for some stupid reason

Where have I gone overboard on Johnson? Relative to the majority of people in this thread, it appears as if I've actually been the most realistic. Check my posts and predictions about his expected output and role. A former NFL GM just compared him to Faulk, not me. I simply passed on the info. I do, however, think he's closer to Marshall Faulk than Warrick Dunn. And he's nowhere near a Jerious Norwood type.

Edit to add: :blackdot: at being criticized for being right about Johnson's talent and expected role.

Okay, I can buy that.Regarding his role, I think it's too early to definitively say what it will or won't be. Week one proved that the coaches view him as their best back and their best playmaker on offense. The big question that lingers (and the main question that has always given me pause about CJ) is can he actually thrive in an every down role over an extended period of time? There aren't a lot of little backs doing that in the NFL right now and it will be some time before we know if Johnson can do it. You can't just look at one game and say, "Yep, he's a featured back." They clearly WANT him to be the guy, but that doesn't mean he's up to the challenge. I guess my whole argument with this BMI thing is that certain body types can render a player incapable of performing the duties demanded of a successful long term featured back. Chris Johnson's build presents some concerns despite his obvious talent. IMO one game couldn't possibly erase those concerns. The coaching staff's intention to make him their go-to-guy doesn't mean he's capable of doing it over the long haul. Obviously he's dynamic and obviously he's more talented than White. I've been receptive to those ideas all along (although he admittedly looks better than I expected so far). But I think it will be some time before either side of the debate will be able to point the finger and say I told you so. I don't think there's much doubt about his talent though. He's obviously pretty good.

being a Chris Johnson owner has been somewhat stressful the last 48 hours.

He is my RB3/4 right now and I need to find a way to get him in the lineup, but have two studs in front of him.

This guy is too good to sit. Seems like a lot of owners want him in a trade, but I seriously see very high end RB2 (even RB1) type numbers coming this season.

I think it is going to be scarry what he does at Cinci this week.

Just watched the Shortcut. That OLine is pretty damn good. Johnson looked awesome but Lendale looked pretty damn good too.
 ON what planet is 2.7ypc "looking good"?
I was thinking the same thing. Its bad enough White is slow, but watching him play after watching CJ makes him like he is walking in quicksand.
There's really not that much difference between Lendale and Chris:Mass x Velocity = Mass x Velocity

ARGH. If Colston didnt get hurt I could trade Roddy White straight up for Johnson to be my RB3 but my WR core would be depleted.

EDIT: Scratch that the Johnson owner knows hes good

If both things were equall, guards would be playing RB. Speed>>>>Mass

I disagree but a definably better theory than Value Based Drafting. :lmao:

After hyping Chris Johnson, getting him in all 4 of my fantasy leagues and telling the entire world how good he was going to be, I've come to realize that EBF is right. His body mass won't let him do the things other RB's can do.

He can't run the ball 25 times a game up the middle. Not going to happen. Jeff Fisher would run him into the ground and within 3 years his 4.24 speed would be 4.40 and then he'd be just a small guy with good speed.

What sets him apart is his blazing speed and open-field abilities.

I see him as a faster version of Brian Westbrook.

Last year Westbrook carried the ball 18 times a game, the highest average of carries in his career. I think Chris should stay around 15. Westbrook weighs a couple pounds more than Johnson, (but is older) and is 5'10, while Johnson is 5'11. So they are pretty identical in size.

A faster version of Westbrook could be a scary force in this league. Of course to get there, CJ is going to have to have great hands, and he's shown a little inconsistency in that area over the last few weeks, though his TD was very, very nice.

I think at this point, there is nothing more to say about the argument. We won't know if he's injury prone for 3-5 years. I think if he stayed healthy, he can be one of the most electric playmakers in league history. Is that crazy? Maybe. But he averaged over 6 ypc against the Jags ferocious defense in his first NFL game WITHOUT the benefit of any long runs to pad the stats.

Right now, the only thing negative you can say about him is that he might not hold up. And that might be true? If he starts getting hurt or can't stay healthy, a better version of Jerious Norwood is certainly a possibility, and one that can't be discounted.

The key to it all is whether he stays healthy under a solid workload, which it appears he'll receive. I certainly am not 100% confident that he will. I hope so, but it's the NFL and injuries happen to everyone.

But I truly believe that if he can stay healthy, he'll be one of the most explosive players that we have ever seen and I'm willing to take the risk.

Just watched the Shortcut. That OLine is pretty damn good. Johnson looked awesome but Lendale looked pretty damn good too.
Lendale had 15 carries for 40 yards. Less than 3 yards per carry. Lendale was terrible.
And half those carries (along with a dropped pass with nobody near him) came more than halfway through the 4th quarter, after Johnson had left the game. Before that, Johnson had more than double LenDale's touches.Make no mistake....this is Chris Johnson's offense and LenDale is his caddy.

Did you watch the game or basing it on #s? I watched the game and he looked pretty good. Yeah he got stuffed alot but alot of his carries came when the Jags knew the Titans would run

A lot of the people around here dont watch any games except for their favorite team and ESPN highlights and that is why you get a lot of posts that simply state stats. It's sad because this place is filled with know-it-alls that don't even watch the games. That being said, there are a lot of very knowledgeable people around here. You just have to know which ones to read.Lendale didnt look bad, but he wasn't good either. His first step is so slow.

Marshall Faulk wasn't huge either. He's listed at 5'10, 211, but I highly doubt that was his initial weight coming out of SD state. +/- 5 lbs and CJ is right there.

Watched the whole thing. He didn't look good to me. But then, I like my offensive players to actually do something with the ball.Don't get me wrong, Lendale is a very good goalline, short-yardage back. There's a place for that on a football team. How do you know his carries came when the Jags knew he would run? So Johnson's came when the Jags DIDN'T know it was a running play?White is a slow, plodding short-yardage back.

I will not allow this thread to fall to page 3 again.

I feel pretty confident about Johnson turning into a keeper for me by the end of the year. We keep 4 in a 10 team PPR league with a flex spot. But he will have to beat out guys like Barber(not happening), Gore(not out of the question, but unlikely), Jennings(lets hope he steps up his receptions this year), and Cotchery(if Favre leaves, I'll release him).

Apparently this evaluation is from someone who works with the Titans. I was reading up on Johnson and found this blurb on a Tennessee forum website

Many of you have PM'd me questions about why I have been so vocal about CJ so early.............so instead of answering each one of you i will post several observations I have made about why I think CJ is going to be a franchise changing back.................

1. Vision............its built in and genetically based and and his best attribute.........its also the reason why he is great in returns and the pass game. The jump cut, the feet, his angle to the corner, his ability to read blockers and his ability to hit the backside and make the first guy miss is so good its not funny..........its already all unreal. Few ever have had components of what this kid has............The Titans/Oiler have never had this type of back...........few NFL teams ever do.

2. Ethic............talk to him or listen to him............he wants to be great but he also knows that he has to work hard for it...........and no one on the current staff had to tell him that. He came to the NFL game with this desire.......

3. Speed..........obvious advantage for him but notice it is not his best attribute. The speed he has is football fxnal. It allows him to hit holes and get outside when he needs to be but it is how he cuts and his short area quickness that is indescribable to others who have not seen him...........you have to see him do it several times before you understand why he is so good........no one squares him up because of his feet and his body control..............he also has a last gear that no one has ever had............you will have to trust me..........when he hits it.........you'll know...........I saw it the first time two weeks ago in a return ST practice..........The reason his speed is functional is because he also has perfect balance............and when a back is balanced they are dynamite between the tackles...........he is.

4. Short area quickness is very Westbrook like......I saw this in him in january and that is why I had him in round one early on...............he can move freely in the box or a gap and hit a crease and he is gone...........he is slippery because of his feet and balance........this attribute is why the adjective is used...........he also runs with a perfect pad level and he is able to deliver a powerful blow becase he makes himself small and compact within the hole.............

5. Smarts............the entire package was thrown at him and he ate it all up..........there is nothing he cant do from day one............extreme rarity for any rookie but the area he shocked everyone was his blitz pick on pass downs..........no rookie will see the field on third downs until they can protect the franchise.......that is why AP had only 1300 yds and CTaylor had 800..............CJ will be our third down guy week one. More chances mean more yds and scores.

6. He does not slow down when he cuts and he can cut an actually accelerate while he cuts................only two guys could do it like this...........Eric Dickerson and Bob Hayes............that is it in NFL history.............both scored alot of TD's............so will CJ

7. Hands............soft and reliable..........he rarely fumbles and the ball rarely falls incomplete because of him..............he will be as good recieving as running...........i see him as a serious dual threat and he will catch 100 balls and rush for 1000 yds many times in the same season.

8. His skill set will dictate coverage..........usually top flight WR make this occur...........He is a rare back who will do that............Faulk could do it........so could RCraig............but CJ will make other around him more dangerous because he will be the focal point when he steps on the field............he will open things in the seams, the alley and the edge...........running lanes will widen and chances for VY,LW , Crump, and the WR will be more common.............even if he does not touch the ball..........just by formation alone he will create mismatches...........no TN Titan have ever done that.

9. He allows the OL now to take wider splits...........wider splits help spacing and open seams and gaps...........that means backside cutbacks are there and it also means weakside running can show back in the playbook...........few teams With hsi speed it means they dont have to sustain their blocks very long to spring him.........it also will spread out team D's and make cutback lanes more prominent............this advantage will hurt faster smaller team D's...............

10. Ball Security..........he has gotten a ton of touches in his career and he just does not fumble..............most great backs have an achilles heel..........this area was one for guys like Dickerson Dorsett APetersen, and even Dmac............this guy understand ball security already............

He is the total package..................i would feed this kid 20-25 times every game..........and I would use him on ST to start every game............i want the opposition thinking about him than everyone else..............he will give you ST TDs to allow us to run downhill in the second halfs of games..............getting early leads with our D and running game would be so dvantageous to how we have been playing.................

Same thing could have been written about Felix Jones by someone who works for the Cowboys. :(

Yes, youre right. The poster's name was Bongo or something and apparently his opion is well-repected in Tenn football community. Who knows, but it was interesting to read.

It's interesting reading. And I agree with alot of what he says.But...

A) who is this writer?

B) what are his credentials?

C) I'm betting he's a huge homer
This article speaks about him a little bit (in regards to Jason Allen). http://tennesseevolblog.blogspot.com/2005/...-career-in.html

Many of you have PM'd me questions about why I have been so vocal about CJ so early.............so instead of answering each one of you i will post several observations I have made about why I think CJ is going to be a franchise changing back.................1. Vision............its built in and genetically based and and his best attribute.........
It sounds like he likes him a little bit...

Apparently this evaluation is from someone who works with the Titans. I was reading up on Johnson and found this blurb on a Tennessee forum website Enjoy:Many of you have PM'd me questions about why I have been so vocal about CJ so early.............so instead of answering each one of you i will post several observations I have made about why I think CJ is going to be a franchise changing back.................1. Few ever have had components of what this kid has............The Titans/Oiler have never had this type of back...........few NFL teams ever do.2. Ethic............talk to him or listen to him............he wants to be great but he also knows that he has to work hard for it...........and no one on the current staff had to tell him that. He came to the NFL game with this desire.......3. Speed..........obvious advantage for him but notice it is not his best attribute. The speed he has is football fxnal. It allows him to hit holes and get outside when he needs to be but it is how he cuts and his short area quickness that is indescribable to others who have not seen him...........you have to see him do it several times before you understand why he is so good........no one squares him up because of his feet and his body control..............he also has a last gear that no one has ever had............you will have to trust me..........when he hits it.........you'll know...........I saw it the first time two weeks ago in a return ST practice..........The reason his speed is functional is because he also has perfect balance............and when a back is balanced they are dynamite between the tackles...........he is.4. Short area quickness is very Westbrook like......I saw this in him in january and that is why I had him in round one early on...............he can move freely in the box or a gap and hit a crease and he is gone...........he is slippery because of his feet and balance........this attribute is why the adjective is used...........he also runs with a perfect pad level and he is able to deliver a powerful blow becase he makes himself small and compact within the hole.............5. More chances mean more yds and scores.6. He does not slow down when he cuts and he can cut an actually accelerate while he cuts................only two guys could do it like this...........Eric Dickerson and Bob Hayes............that is it in NFL history.............both scored alot of TD's............so will CJ7. Hands............soft and reliable..........he rarely fumbles and the ball rarely falls incomplete because of him..............he will be as good recieving as running...........i see him as a serious dual threat and he will catch 100 balls and rush for 1000 yds many times in the same season.8. His skill set will dictate coverage..........usually top flight WR make this occur...........He is a rare back who will do that............Faulk could do it........so could RCraig............but CJ will make other around him more dangerous because he will be the focal point when he steps on the field............he will open things in the seams, the alley and the edge...........running lanes will widen and chances for VY,LW , Crump, and the WR will be more common.............even if he does not touch the ball..........just by formation alone he will create mismatches...........no TN Titan have ever done that.9. He allows the OL now to take wider splits...........wider splits help spacing and open seams and gaps...........that means backside cutbacks are there and it also means weakside running can show back in the playbook...........few teams With hsi speed it means they dont have to sustain their blocks very long to spring him.........it also will spread out team D's and make cutback lanes more prominent............this advantage will hurt faster smaller team D's...............10. As a Titan's Homer I can tell you Bongo works for the organization. I believe he is the team doctor or one of the doctors and for the last few years has posted on some titan sites with very good information, imo. He is not always right but he does have an insider viewpoint that very few on this board will ever have.

From my count, the boards are up to 3 CJ3 avatars now.

Congratulations.

I think Chris Johnson just deserves his own forum.
