The Great 2020 All Time Movie Draft- The judging is heavily biased against me. It’s a hoax! Fake news. (2 Viewers)

I assume you and your wife aren’t fans? My nieces and nephew (10 and 11) loved it when they were younger and their whole family did the Wizard of Oz for Halloween a couple years ago. Your son is likely too old for it now.
Wife doesn't watch movies :sadbanana: , and honestly it's not something that I have watched since we've had our kids.   It's one that I've been meaning to rewatch soon though.

IMO a lot of "kids" movies pre-90s or so are surprisingly creepy and weird compared to the stuff that we've watched with our kids since they've been born.

Round 2 Humphrey Bogart, Legendary Movie Star

Bogart was also a great actor. But a movie star is someone with a magnetic screen personality, who draws you in so that when he or she appears on camera you rarely notice anyone else. Nobody has ever had this quality more than Humphrey Bogart.

I don’t hate Goonies but you’re talking greatest children’s movies of all time NOT greatest children’s movies that my kids happen to have watched. There are at least 5-10 movies that jump in my head as absolute classics in this category, and Goonies is not one of them. Sorry.

16 seems both too old to get into the movie and also too old to be scared of the wicked witch and flying monkeys.
tell me about it, been trying to have her watch it for a good 8 years.. no dice.. oh well, my other two daughters enjoyed it though...

Can't make fun of this pick*. Bogart is awesome.

*Except maybe to say that even blind squirrels pick up acorns every now and then. :pokey:

No, there is another...

I know Tim said he didn’t want to run things so maybe we can crowdsource getting judges - I’m happy to put the call out for judges, first come first serve.  Ideally we won’t take drafters for now - also, please don’t take on too many categories unless you are sure you will have the time.  Last, know the category which means all triplemania picks will be high ones.

"When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living... until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The ocean turns red, and despite all the poundin' and the hollerin', they all come in and they... rip you to pieces ...

... So, eleven hundred men went in the water; 316 men come out and the sharks took the rest ..."

2.11: Jaws, Suspense Film

my 16 year old does not want to watch wizard of oz, does not like the witch and monkey scenes.. it's one of my favorite movies, whaddaygonnado?.
this was a very common deal backinaday. Thanksgiving was when my father's bigass family (37 1st cousins) would gather in his hometown from around the country so there was like 50 people in 4 houses and WoO was a Thanksgiving nite TV tradition in the 60s. there was always a coupla nightmare/freakout incidents among the younger kids

I can judge a few.

Toughens them up for life.

finally got two of my daughters (not the 16 year old, lol) to watch this one.. great pick and an all time fave of mine...

I can judge a few if needed, how does it work?
After all the picks are made in a category you rank them from best to worst. A good judge explains his or her thought process when doing so. Then you get torn apart, insulted and attacked mercilessly.
That’s about it.

lol, in that case...

put me on reserve from the draft pool... if we don't have enough judges...

I have to rewatch this. I honestly think I only saw it once when I was around 13. Then I rented all the sequels and I think my ####### liked some the sequels better because they had more shark violence  :bag:

You are the sole arbiter of the rankings for the category.  You will rank them 1-n and then they will be awarded points n-1 based on your rankings.  In sports several of the judges came up with formulas - much to the chagrin of some drafters.  You pick how you rank them but ideally you don’t just use your judgement but rather conventional thinking with a little of your own thoughts mixed in.  If you really think Ernest Goes to Camp is the epitome of Comedic film making then 1. Maybe judging isn’t for you and 2. Don’t use that to justify ranking it above other movies

Note - your time is appreciated by the drafters but you may get some snide comments from folks.  You are welcome to actually post your judging style (for example - you May think Box Office success is critical) but you don’t have to.

For those saying they can judge - please select the categories you want - again, first come first serve for now.  Also would be good if you state whether you would be open to judging others if we don’t find a judge for a particular category.

Here lies the body of Mary Lee!

Died at the age of a hundred and three.

For fifteen years she kept her virginity...not a bad record for this vicinity. ;)

Ok - I feel like my relative value add is probably on some old black and whites.  I’ll pick a few that seem to fall in there, but I could switch up depending on strengths/weaknesses of other judges.

Actually, this is an insightful statement about film in general, and suspense movies in particular.

In many ways, Jaws is a "modern" film in that it leans forward much harder than it reaches back. Yet it is still a movie of another time (seen through a 2020 lens), and one of the ways you can really tell that is how much Jaws relies on pacing -- not merely visuals -- to create apprehension in viewers.

Compared to the sequels ... yes, there is a lot less "action!" in Jaws. But the tension in the latter is far more palpable.

The new 4k disc of Jaws is flat out fantastic. Lots of classic movies are coming out in the format and it's amazing the quality they're putting out.

I'm a little turned around with the category names on the Google Sheet. Lewis is picked here for the "GOAT - Leading Actor" and not for the "GOAT - Movie Star - Guy - Modern"?
Once more Movie Star picks are made, I think the difference between those categories will become clear.

Jaws helped launch a few home formats -- it was released on VHS in 1980 and was the first LaserDisc released in the U.S. two years earlier.

Also -- does anyone else remember the early days of HBO when home release of 1970s blockbusters was a Big Deal(TM)? Jaws was one of the belwethers.

@hagmania Doug raises a good point -- there may be some confusion -- I mean for it to go in leading actor (not movie star dude).

No, I meant to ask which category @higgins intended (even if subject to change later).

EDIT: Gracias, higgins!

And I kinda goofed that category name. In the original list it has Best Actor. I'm assuming we are still distinguishing between Lead and Supporting though right?

Yeah ... if we've got "Supporting Actor", that kind of presupposes a "Leading Actor" category.
