The Great 2020 All Time Movie Draft- The judging is heavily biased against me. It’s a hoax! Fake news. (2 Viewers)

QT has some amazing dialogue but he also writes some of the cringiest stuff. RD is loaded with it. That movie was super important though in the development of 90's cinema though, such a game changer.
Not to talk too much about judge-y things, but this was a big reason I wrote this and a few others down.  I don't have a 90s movie since I will most likely be moving Heat, so I was thinking about this as I watched RD the other night.

I guess to me his cringy stuff is still better than his Grindhouse passion that is too prevalent in his later career.   And I misspoke above.  RD is probably my 2nd favorite and is 2a/2a tie with IB.

Objectively, it’s a good movie and I see why people love it. It’s just not for me. Something about it annoys me. I felt that way when it came out, I think I was the only one of my friends who didn’t love it.

Couple of notes to judges:

  • Again, thank you guys - it really is appreciated
  • With folks moving picks to new categories, you may want to wait before spending time watching movies you haven't see (unless you just want to!).
  • While you may or may not have a formula or process for how you judge I would say hold off now on posting that.  Just to be fair to everyone as we are so far along.
  • Reminder that we added a sheet to the Draft Google doc that has direct links to JustWatch which should in theory give you where these films can be streamed

28.14 - On Golden Pond - Best of the 80s

On Golden Pond is also one of the few movies to earn the nominations for the Big Five Academy Awards (Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay).  It won three.

28.12 - Downfall - Historical Drama

This is a fantastic movie. Of course, we all love the meme-worthy parodies of this scene, but the film is notable to me in that it puts a very real, very human face on Hitler and his people. All too often in film, they are almost cartoon characters, and maybe that's to be expected. But the chilling reality is, these were real people, with real emotions and relationships, who did really bad things. And it all crumbled around them. Fantastic movie all around.

@higgins
my 'umble submission

28.15 - The Rain Man - 1980s

Raymond Babbitt would tell you this movie was 140 minutes long. I'd tell you it's p darn good.

There are 2 I am staring at really hard now that Reservoir Dogs was sniped.  I guess I like fewer space movies than I do the other category, so I will go with that one.  OR, some that I had in mind were more one Earth than in space.

29.01:  MOON - sci-fi in space

We were just commenting how we thought the decade was weak.  I'm a child of the 80's and I will say that kids movies were really good then and did kind of dominate the decade - so there's that.
Depends what you are looking for like you said.  For heavier dramas/foreign movies I'd probably take the 00s.

Our boy Hags is busy painting his new :mansion:  so I'm going to help him out with some commentary.

Rain Man was the highest-grossing film of 1988. The film won four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Dustin Hoffman.  It had eight nominations in all.

Hoffman with a virtuoso performance - "5 minutes to Wapner" - and Cruise in one of his best performances.  Two powerhouse actors and a fantastic screenplay.

Must have been my write up of The Natural. I mentioned a few actors and actresses that haven't been drafted yet, as well as a director.  I have corrected this habit since; see my write up for 48 Hrs.
I'm not sure if you are joking, but what I was asking is that you hide your quote of wikkid's post.

I love it when our choice for actor keeps getting highlighted for the greatest parts of various movies.  Other drafters pimping our picks @Charlie Steiner.....love it!

29.02 - Chariots of Fire - Sports

Chariots of Fire was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won four, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. It is ranked 19th in the British Film Institute's list of Top 100 British films. The film is also notable for its memorable electronic theme tune by Vangelis, who won the Academy Award for Best Original Score, this despite being inferior to the gold standard of movie scores - Star Wars.

Not too many sports movies win Best Picture but this one was very deserving.  Such an inspirational film.

Another one dominated by a great cast, including the Borg queen as Mr. Abrahams' love interest.  I remember seeing Siskel and Ebert's review before seeing it in the theater, and they were critical of the scene showing the first race between Abrahams and Liddell, calling it anticlimactic. TBH, I think that enhanced the power of that scene; Abrahams had built up this rivalry so much in his head but the reality was that it was just another race and wasn't the end all be all he made it out to be.

I haven't seen Grind House or Death Proof, but I would rank Resevoir Dogs with The Hateful 8 at the bottom of his catalog.

That should play into my hands well in that category as I have a historical drama with no war.
I would rank Death Proof as his worst and Hateful 8 right behind it.

I like the rest of his films.

29.04 -- Tokyo Story, Foreign.

Tokyo Story is widely regarded as Ozu's masterpiece and is often cited as one of the greatest films ever made. In 2012, it was voted the best film of all time in a poll of film directors by Sight & Sound magazine.

Every decade, starting in 1952, the British film magazine Sight & Sound asks an international group of film critics to vote for the greatest film of all time. Since 1992, they have invited directors to vote in a separate poll. 63 critics participated in 1952, 70 critics in 1962, 89 critics in 1972, 122 critics in 1982, 132 critics and 101 directors in 1992, 145 critics and 108 directors in 2002, and 846 critics and 358 directors in 2012.

Tokyo Story (1953) topped the directors' poll in 2012 with 48 votes, dethroning Citizen Kane.

OK, so I checked out ratings for this (non-critics) and it was very mixed. Some loved it and others said it was slow, depressing and outdated.

I'll put it on my watch list, but don't have high expectations since I usually don't like this type of film.

I just watched Tokyo Story on Saturday night. Review is in the Recently Viewed thread.

I liked it after a bit of thought. But I don't get the "greatest ever" talk.

29.05 - Léon: The Professional - Gangster

So this cements it for me - Scarface stays in the 80's, and I'll pick this personal favorite for gangster.

I love this movie - don't remember any real "gangster" element to it - it's been a while though.
