The Great American Draft II- Categories Set; 1st round set (1 Viewer)

Another suggestion is to agree as much as possible on a judging scheme in advance. I know that for many, just the draft and reading the selections is the real fun, but some of us (i.e., me) enjoy the judging as well. That seemed to fall apart a bit (no one's fault) in recent timdrafts.
I will do all of the judging, and not participate in the draft itself. I'll set the guidelines later but let me say that my own opinions on greatness (such as the recent rankings in my thread) will play very little part- I will be looking for good argument on behalf of the drafters. We currently have 9 people in. That's enough for a draft, but I would like at least 12. 15-20 would be perfect. We'll start sometime next week so hopefully we can get some more people before we do.
I like this change. While we've had some awesome judges, there were far more "I'll get to it... I'll get to it... I have to bail".

Im going to back out also

Unless you need me. Then just put me in and Ill get to it when I can. Can be a perma skip

Before I pick, let me confirm that these are living people, right Tim?

The sports categories are all "current" players, correct?

What about the other categories? Talk show host, politicians, business mogul, etc. Do they have to be current?

They have to be alive and the more recently relevant the better. But it could be somebody retired. In sports they need to be current but their best days could be behind them.

Tim - please read and respond - put in spoilers tags for spotlighting

So, since you are judging if I just go Dylan, Kobe, Hillary, Big Ben with my first 4 picks, I win, right?

I can't be bribed with picks designed to curry my favor. Cash on the other hand, is different. Donations can be made to the timschochet foundation...

Some really interesting categories. But I'll go with one of the tougher ones first:

1.01 Muhammad Ali - Cultural Icon

Lots of top choices in lots of categories out there, but to me, it's fitting Ali goes first. He really needs no write up, and is recognized the world over, but here's a snippet from wiki:

In 1993, the Associated Press reported that Ali was tied with Babe Ruth as the most recognized athlete, out of over 800 dead or alive athletes, in America. The study found that over 97% of Americans over 12 years of age identified both Ali and Ruth.

He was the recipient of the 1997 Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Two years later, in 1999, the BBC produced a special version of its annual BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award ceremony, and Ali was voted their Sports Personality of the Century, receiving more votes than the other four contenders combined. On September 13, 1999, Ali was named "Kentucky Athlete of the Century" by the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame in ceremonies at the Galt House East. On January 8, 2005, Muhammad Ali was presented with the Presidential Citizens Medal by President George W. Bush. Later that November, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom at a White House ceremony.and the "Otto Hahn Peace Medal in Gold" of the UN Association of Germany (DGVN) in Berlin for his work with the US civil rights movement and the United Nations (December 17, 2005).

Ali is a fine first pick. For those who haven't read it, I recommend the Thomas Hauser bio- quite possibly the best book about sports I have ever read.

More recently relevant - who are you saying we should take - an inferior actress who is in the prime of her career or an older actress who was superior but hasn't done much recently? In trying to understand how you plan to judge.

Category 23 ... that's strictly talk shows, or is it any television host? Sports, competition programs, game shows, special events, etc. ... is that fair game?

I'll play. Put me on a 15 minute clock.
Can frosty take my place?
If you insist. We keep losing drafters dammit.
Not for nothing - I didn't have time to explain earlier today - but I mostly dropped out because in previous timdrafts, half or more of my fun was in the judging; it gave me a chance to do some (non-legal) writing, which is fun for me. So when you indicated you would judge all categories, that removed a lot of the impetus for me to join. Not a knock against you or anything; I just knew I wouldn't enjoy it as much and didn't want to dampen anyone else's fun.

You can always do your own "non-official" judging. We've done that before.

You should play - you're good to have in these things.

I only offered to judge because of late people who promised to do it flaked out. You are absolutely welcome to judge any categories you'd like to, and that goes for anybody else whom I trust.

I will look at the totality of their career. Recent relevancy is important, all things being equal, but totality of career is MORE important- so long as they are alive.

I'll play if it's not too late. I promise short writeups, and I won't volunteer to judge anything. And I may disappear for a day or two. But I will do my best to throw a few curve balls with my selections. However, no promises my sentences won't begin with conjunctions.

Not too late for you or anyone else. You're #11.

Now that's a category I'd like to read.

it's all about the curve balls.

Yeah, what's going on here? I am gonna go out for a bit but I am 1.3. Can someone take my pick?

PMed BobbyLayne just to be sure he knows this has fired up. That could be an issue since Tim started it after business hours -- which is fine, just that some people may have missed it.

These drafts always start early without a clock (so no rush really, although getting through a round or two would be cool). Tim usually picks a definitive day/time for a clock to officially start.
