The Hahnenkamm (1 Viewer)

Just as the countdown to the new year is eagerly anticipated, so the remaining days leading up to the Hahnenkamm-Races in Kitzbühel, Austria, are carefully counted with infectious enthusiasm by the ski world as well as sports fans around the globe.

Since the inaugural race held in 1931, one thing is forever constant: he who masters the courage, exhibits the speed, attacks where possible and skis technically sound, enough so to win the famed Hahnenkamm downhill on the treacherous Streif piste, instantly becomes a ski racing legend.

Accomplish this most difficult feat and one adds his name to the record books joining some of the sport's all-time greats - luminaries like Schwabl, Pravda, Molterer, Sailer, Schranz, Killy, Collombin, Klammer, Podborski, Zurbriggen, Heinzer, Maier, Eberharter, Defago and Cuche.

In 2001, Hermann Maier further fortified his status as one of the greatest legends in Kitzbühel history winning the Hahnenkamm by 0.27 seconds ahead of teammate Hannes Trinkl. The immensely popular racer was also dominant in super-G winning five times and finishing second once between 2000-2006. Historic performances by colourful characters like Maier are what make Kitzbühel such a special place.

The biggest stars of FIS World Cup ski racing return to the hallowed slopes of Kitzbühel, the weekend of 21 - 23 January, to do battle in Friday's super-G, Saturday's vaunted downhill and Sunday's traditional slalom. As always, the combination title will also be awarded to the racer who attains the best aggregate time in both the downhill and slalom.

Snow conditions on the Streif and the Ganslern, where the slalom will take place, are excellent and on Friday, 7 January, this year's races were officially confirmed. With a snow base between 75-80 cm and with some parts exceeding 100 cm, the green light was given to organizers by Hahnenkamm Race Chairman, Michael Huber and FIS Chief Race Director, Günter Hujara.

Just who will waltz off with the prestigious Hahnenkamm trophy - awarded annually to the downhill champion - remains to be seen.

Can defending champion Didier Cuche, Carlo Janka or maybe surprising Silvan Zurbriggen extend Switzerland's streak of three consecutive victories? Will Austria's gentle giant Michael Walchhofer continue his hot streak and capture a second Hahnenkamm title in his farewell performance? Or perhaps it will be one of Walchhofer's countrymen on the rejuvenated Austrian speed team - Scheiber, Baumann or Kroell?

Perhaps the attacking Viking Aksel Lund Svindal will become the first Norwegian Hahnenkamm victor since 1990? Or maybe American Bode Miller will find the magic as only Miller can to improve upon his second place showing of 2008? Might the Canadians return to prominence much like the glory days of the Crazy Canucks in the early 80's? Or will the winner be a big surprise - as was almost the case last year with Slovenia's Andrej Sporn who so nearly won before being relegated from first place by a mere 0.26 of a second?

No matter who achieves the ultimate glory this time around in glamorous Kitzbühel - you can be assured that the 71st Hahnenkamm weekend will provide plenty of thrills, compelling action, edge-of-your-seat drama, a slice of danger and some festive celebrations along the way, all with the scenic Tyrolean Alps as a stunning backdrop.

Todd Brooker's rag doll tumble down the Hahnenkahm in 1987 must rank as the No. 1 spill of all time: a bone-jarring, teeth-rattling, jaw-dropping ride down the most treacherous piece of ice-covered real estate on the White Circus.

anyone know where to watch it on the net?network tv used to show it.espn doesnt anymore.wcsn.com went pay.
should be on tape delay on universal sports (they have all the races). Don't think its live anywhere on tv. You can pay for Universal's internet feed or stream from somewhere else on the net if you want real time.

The Hahnenkamm World Cup ski race is perhaps the most famous downhill race in the world. The perilous 3.3km course has witnessed some of the greatest racers of all time, and some of the greatest crashes too.

Hahnenkamm austriaMaybe it is the fact that at one stage the gradient is 85º, that explains the fear and trepidation that world class racers show when entering this race.

Their concerns aren't unreasonable either. In 2009, Daniel Albrecht crashed at 138km/h on the final training race, landing on his back after a 70m jump and narrowly missing death. He has not skied competitively since.

Just watching the skiers' skis clatter across the icy slope is enough to terrify most people. The run may be dangerous, but that makes the win all the more sweet. Didier Cuche has won twice now, cementing his position at the top of the sport.

The race is scheduled for the 21st to the 23rd of January 2011. Organisers frequently have to shorten or alter the run according to the weather conditions; the race has even been cancelled in recent years.

But when it does happen, it is an incredible spectacle. 85,000 fans, 19 TV channels broadcasting live and the festivities of Kitzbuhel make this an unforgettable weekend. The race offers the huge sum of over 500,000 euros to the winner, but has taken a charitable turn in the last couple of years. 130 euros is given to each of the farming families on the mountain, and the racers last year auctioned of their race start numbers in order to raise money for relief in Haiti.

Kitzbühel, Austria - Saturday’s Hahnenkamm downhill can proceed as scheduled, as an official training run was completed Thursday morning on “The Streif.”

Despite steady snow falling throughout a majority of the session, race officials were aptly able to send all competitors down the mountain. 64 athletes were scheduled on the second training run startlist, with 61 leaving the gate.

Canada’s Erik Guay was the first racer to kick out of the starthouse at 10:45am, finding his way down the course and posting a time of 2:03.60. Last year’s World Cup super-G champion was clocked at 133.6 kph in the Zielschuss.

“In my head it was going to be a lot harder and a lot faster, I mean don’t get me wrong Kitzbühel is never easy,” said Guay after his run. “It’s been three weeks that I haven’t been on skis so as you could imagine I was a little nervous in the start, he said, referring to a recent back injury.

“It was a bit of a high speed inspection,” he said, insinuating that he didn’t ski at full throttle; however his run was still solid enough for eighth place. “I wasn’t that committed, but it is what it is and it’s good to be down bottom here in the finish.”

Thursday’s fastest time belonged to two-time Hahnenkamm champion, Didier Cuche. The Swiss veteran’s time of 2:01.12, was 0.37 better than Italy’s Christof Innerhofer, who finished second. Austria’s Georg Streitberger ended third, 1.18 slower than Cuche.

American Bode Miller was fourth, while last Saturday’s Lauberhorn winner from Wengen, Klaus Kroell, finished fifth.

Wearing bib No. 5, Hans Grugger of Austria lost his balance in mid-air coming off the Mausefalle jump, became somewhat twisted, and crashed hard, ultimately sliding down the track.

The 29-year-old Austrian was airlifted off the mountain by helicopter, resulting in an approximate 30-minute delay. According to initial information, Grugger has suffered a traumatic brain and chest injury.

2006 champion and the tour’s current downhill leader, Michael Walchhofer, took his turn as scheduled, despite hurting his throat and banging his left knee during training on Wednesday, the misfortune of having a gate come back and smack him following a straddle. The veteran Austrian – who has declared that Saturday’s race in Kitzbühel will be his last – took it relatively easy, but still completed his run in tenth place, 2.58 seconds off Cuche’s benchmark.

In general, racers were very satisfied with conditions on the legendary piste, despite warm temperatures yesterday and the cancellation of the originally scheduled training due to mixed precipitation, soft snow and organizers seeking to prevent further deterioration of the course.

“The snow is pretty hard, not so soft,” said France’s Adrien Theaux. “It’s very bumpy at the top and at the end. In the middle, I think it’s more difficult than last year.”

“The course is fine, it will be good with weather like this,” said Canada’s Manuel Osborne-Paradis, referring to the colder temperatures on Thursday.

American rookie Travis Ganong, 22, successfully made his first-ever trip down the legendary Streif course.

“I was a little nervous at the top, but once I started skiing and made it through that first section, I came out to the road and was like ‘wow, that is the most fun I’ve ever had in my life,’” said an enthusiastic Ganong in the finish area. “It was awesome. It worked out better than I expected.”

The young Californian acted like a kid in a candy store after completing his run on the occasionally treacherous piste. On the walk out through the stadium, Ganong asked training run leader Cuche to pose for a photo with him. The three-time World Cup downhill champ obliged, as Ganong’s mother snapped the picture.

Instances like these are a quick reminder that Kitzbühel is surely a special place.

Racing begins tomorrow with the super-G slated to begin at 11:30am local time, while the 71st edition of the Hahnenkamm downhill is on tap for the same time on Saturday.

Hans Grugger underwent brain surgery Thursday (Jan. 20) within hours after striking his head in a horrendous crash at the Mausefalle on Kitzbuhel's downhill track, the Streif.

Reports indicate he lost control in the air while entering the Mausefalle and banged his head on the icy track immediately losing consciousness.

According to the initial diagnosis of Dr. Michael Blauth, the head of trauma surgery at the University Hospital of Innsbruck, where Grugger was flown, he sustained serious head injuries as well as a chest injury and was unresponsive.

Entering surgery medical director and neurosurgeon Alexander Kofler said “How long the procedure will take cannot be foreseen.”

I love downhill skiing and the rest of the "alpine" disciplines, but it seems like they're becoming a relic of the past, akin to ski jumping, etc... Kids who ski / snowboard these days are trying to emulate these guys and

-- 30 years ago before the advent of snowboarding and Glen Plake et al it was a different story. Just a hunch, but I'll bet events like the Winter X Games have more viewers and marketing muscle than World Cup skiing events.

i agree with you on the viewer numbers, and i have skiied and partied with scott schmidt, doug coumbs, tom jungst and other extreme skiiers, but nothing excites me like 'the downhill'.

Awesome.

I have skied with plake and the mahre brothers. There is nothing like looking down a hill that scares the living #### out of you, and then dropping in with no where to go but down. Skiing with plake, twice, were moments I will never forget. My skiing improved 10 fold each time. It was basically, don't fall, don't lose sight of him, and most of all, don't think too much about what you're doing. Jesus that was some scary ### ####, but beyond epic!

Shred the gnar people'!!!!!!

Good times!

Hans Grugger underwent brain surgery Thursday (Jan. 20) within hours after striking his head in a horrendous crash at the Mausefalle on Kitzbuhel's downhill track, the Streif.Reports indicate he lost control in the air while entering the Mausefalle and banged his head on the icy track immediately losing consciousness. According to the initial diagnosis of Dr. Michael Blauth, the head of trauma surgery at the University Hospital of Innsbruck, where Grugger was flown, he sustained serious head injuries as well as a chest injury and was unresponsive.Entering surgery medical director and neurosurgeon Alexander Kofler said “How long the procedure will take cannot be foreseen.”
Hope he's OK...

KITZBUEHEL, Austria - Austrian skier Hans Grugger underwent brain surgery Thursday after crashing during a training run for the World Cup downhill on the demanding Streif course. The Austrian ski federation said Grugger's recovery in the next 24 hours will be monitored.

"Until then, it's impossible to say anything about how Hans is really doing," said Josef Schmid, the federation's head of media relations.

Grugger was brought to a hospital by helicopter in nearby Innsbruck with a brain contusion and a chest injury and was "not responsive," according to federation spokesman Markus Aigner.

Grugger fell after losing balance at the Mausefalle section, a long jump shortly after a sharp right turn, and was motionless on the slope.

The hospital medical director Alexandra Kofler told Austrian broadcaster ORF "the patient's condition can only be judged based on the operation and the time immediately afterward."

FIS men's race director Guenther Hujara said that "we have seen rescue and evacuation working very accurate, very precise. We all wish that everything turns out pretty well."

Hujara called it "a horrifying crash," but there was no need to change the Mausefalle section for Saturday's race.

Grugger was the fifth racer on the course and the first to have trouble in that section.

According to Didier Cuche, who won the downhill race in Kitzbuehel last year, Grugger missed the racing line and was not able to adjust.

"The problem is that you have several bumps in the first two turns," said the Swiss skier, who had the fastest time when training resumed after a 30-minute delay. "If you can't keep your direction there, it can cause you real troubles."

Grugger's teammate, Michael Walchhofer, said the crash frightened him before his own run.

"I saw the crash. It was really bad to watch," the World Cup downhill leader said. "If you see something like that, you start thinking: 'Should I do this to myself?' But you have to put that aside."

Grugger is the third racer in the last four years to get seriously injured after crashing on the Streif course, which is famous for its dangerous bumps, turns and jumps.

In 2008, Scott Macartney of the United States suffered brain injuries and was kept in an induced coma after smashing his head on the icy slop following a crash at the final jump. The next year, Daniel Albrecht of Switzerland suffered life-threatening brain and lung injuries in a similar accident.

Both racers recovered and returned to World Cup competition.

"The bad crash by Hans Grugger has deeply touched me," Albrecht said. "I don't want to comment more on it. My thoughts are with him and his relatives."

The 29-year-old Grugger's career has been marred by knee injuries, which kept him sidelined several times in the last few seasons. He has four career World Cup victories — two in downhill and two in super-G

KITZBUHEL, AUSTRIA – Ivica Kostelic continued his torrid pace of 2011, racing to an astounding fifth World Cup victory in just 20 days, while accomplishing the feat on one of the tougher super-G courses on the circuit.

For the 31-year-old Croatian, who won a slalom in Wengen just six days ago, it was the first super-G win of his 11-year World Cup career.

Starting third out of the gate, his time of 1:17.33 on the 2150-meter Streifalm piste would hold up through 58 more competitors.

“If you want to win somewhere for the first time in a speed event, you want that to be in Kitzbühel,” said Kostelic. “I’m very proud of that.”

Coming into the Hausberg bump and approaching the lower section of the course, Kostelic clocked a speed of 103.8 kph and made up 0.34 seconds between the last split and finish on leader at the time, Yannick Bertrand of France.

“Basically, the run was pretty smooth and when I saw the one-second advantage, I knew it was good,” said the Croatian. “I think I won the race coming out of Larchenschuss and into Hausberg. I was faster than all the guys there and that was important.”

Kostelic’s previous best super-G result occurred last season at World Cup finals in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where he was runner-up to Canada’s Erik Guay.

Austria’s Georg Streitberger landed on the podium for the second consecutive year at a super-G at Kitzbühel. The 29-year-old Austrian, who received one of the biggest ovations of the day upon completing his run, improved on a third place showing last year, finishing second 0.23 behind Kostelic.

"I was really happy for this, nobody was close to Ivica," said the Austrian. "Some of my friends were here today and now I just want to have a good race tomorrow also."

Aksel Lund Svindal continued what has been a very consistent season thus far, earning his fifth podium, while challenging Kostelic, but ultimately finishing third, 0.28 off the speedy Croatian’s pace.

“Actually, I didn’t see the time at the finish since I managed to crash or fall down,” said the Norwegian two-time overall World Cup champion. “I saw some paper fireworks shoot out so I thought that was a good sign.”

Defending Kitzbühel super-G champion Didier Cuche was the next to attack gates after Svindal. Although he pulled back nearly five-tenths on the lower section of the Streifalm, the veteran Swiss was still 0.08 slower than the Norwegian after crossing the line.

Austrian veterans Michael Walchhofer and Benjamin Raich were both having subpar runs, before missing gates on the steep and tricky face entering the lower Zielschuss section of the course.

Last year, Kostelic was 16th in super-G here in Kitzbühel. Friday only marked his second-ever World Cup super-G podium.

"I'm not surprised that he's doing well in super-G," said Svindal. "I'm a little bit surprised that he's winning every race in January. He's one of the guys to beat for the overall, like he was last season, and like he would have been in 2009, if it wasn't for the back problems."

At the post-race press conferences, today's podium finishers spoke about yesterday's horrific crash at the Mausefalle by Austria's Hans Grugger, which resulted in skull-brian trauma and a chest injury. The 29-year-old is in stable condition and has been placed in an induced coma after undergoing a successful operation at the University Hospital in Innsbruck. All racers and race officials wished the best to Grugger and his family.

"It was just brutal when Hans crashed yesterday," said Kostelic. "I felt everyone was quite shocked at the Streif yesterday. This year again, we have a very bumpy course and it's going to be difficult again tomorrow. You have to get this out of your head and just do what you have to do."

Kostelic padded his lead in the overall standings with the triumph, and currently lies ahead of Svindal 826-571 heading into tomorrow’s Hahnenkamm downhill. Last year the Croatian had his best-ever downhill result finishing seventh, while Svindal was fifth.

KITZBUEHEL, Austria (Jan. 22 - Ski Racing Magazine News Service) - Didier Cuche is a man among men. The 36 year old Swiss won the most celebrated ski race for the fourth time Saturday (Jan.22) taking the Kitzbuehel downhill by nearly a second, denying America's Bode Miller the one prize he has yet to claim, that of Hahnenkamm champion.

Adrien Theaux was third earning the first Kitzbuehel downhill podium for a french male in 13 years.

Kitzbuehel's Streif course upheld its reputation as a savage course. It had put Austrian Hans Grugger in hospital and an induced coma from a training crash and six men failed to complete the race, including World Cup standings leader Michael Walchhofer and Canadian Manuel Osborne-Paradis. On a circuit where the start list normally runs in the 70's, just 55 even attempted the challenge.

Cuche not only accepted the task, he attacked the length of the bone rattling Streif for his first win of the season, gaining some redemption for finishing second last week in Wengen's Lauberhorn downhill. He knew as soon as he finished he had put down a world class run. The win matches him with Franz Klammer and Karl Schranz with four DH wins at Kitzbuehel and makes him the oldest racer to win a World Cup race. More importantly to this season, it put him in the lead of the DH standings, moving past Walchhofer and Silvan Zurbriggen.

It was bittersweet for Miller. Despite drawing up easily his best skiing of the season in the one race he needs to flesh out a stunning resume' he was no match for Cuche. But then, no one else was either.

Bode Miller"I didn't take as much risk as he did for sure," said Miller. "He (Cuche) has this course pretty well figured out. He's won here a few times and he takes risks in just the right spots."

"The skis were like rockets," Cuche told Patrick Lang. "It could easily have gone wrong."

He said he was honored to be on the same list as Klammer and Schranz, but said he would have to do "lots more to be considered their equal."

Though Miller doesn't focus on wins and statistics, he did admit this race is one he would like to win. "I was happy when I came across the finish line. I thought I had skied a good race. When this course is as difficult as it is this year more risks tends to lead to making more mistakes and more risk of death or serious injury."

Miller gave Cuche all the credit he could. "You just more or less have to take your hat off. You know you skied a great race and the other person just took more risk, executed better and probably had faster skis. ... I was happy with my race."

The result mirrored 2008 when Cuche also won and Miller was second.

The Austrians missed the podium of their marquee race for the second straight year, perhaps a bit tentative after their teammate's threatening crash in training. Mario Scheiber was fourth with Klaus Kroell, Romed Baumann and Georg Streitberger finishing nine-ten-eleven respectively.

Most disappointing, though, was Walchhofer's DNF and a relatively flat and easy portion of the course. "It was a beginner's fault," he said.

World Cup leader Ivica Kostelic, discovering his speed aptitude at Kitzbuehel with Friday's super G win, tied for 11th to put more room between he and standings leader Aksel Lund Svindal who finished 17th.

Beyond Miller the U.S. group had Ted Ligety adding speed to his repertoire in 27th place while Travis Ganong posted 28th.

Erik Guay led the Candians in 16th while Ben Thomsen got his second career scoring result in 26th.

INNSBRUCK, Austria -- Doctors treating Hans Grugger are optimistic about the skier's condition but can't give a prognosis for his recovery, three days after the Austrian had brain surgery following a crash in downhill training.

The University Hospital in Innsbruck said in a statement Sunday that "the overall picture of test results gives doctors reason to be optimistic."

The hospital says Grugger had a quiet night without complications but that he will be kept in an induced coma.

The 29-year-old Grugger lost balance at a long jump at the Streif course Thursday and smashed his head on the icy slope upon landing. He was brought by helicopter to the hospital and was in surgery for 5 hours.

Jean-Baptiste Grange derailed the Croatian Express by coming from behind to earn the Hahnenkamm slalom crown at Kitzbuehel, Austria Sunday (Feb. 23). It was his second slalom win at Kitzbuehel and his second win of the season after missing last season to a right knee injury. Grange fired off the fastest second run time to move from fourth to first.

First run leader Ivica Kostelic of Croatia was bidding for his sixth win of the month as he continues to step away from the rest of the World Cup field toward the overall title. He could not match the Frenchman out of the blocks and though he closed to within a hundredth of a second at the mid-course timing he finished .28 back in second place. He was only sidelined briefly as he claimed the combined win once the calculations were completed to get that sixth win of the month and put the express right back into high gear.

Third went to Olympic champion Giuliano Razzoli of Italy, his best finish since Vancouver.

The U.S. got a boost in the arm from Nolan Kasper, the Europa Cup slalom leader, who started 58th and finished among the top dozen. It was the best U.S. finish in a Kitzbuehel slalom since 2008. Both American contenders for the race, Ted Ligety and Bode Miller, exited in the first run.

Despite a host of slalom demons, Austria got shoved off the podium, but still crammed four skiers into the top 10. Marcel Hirscher finished fourth, Reinfried Herbst fourth, Mario Matt was eighth and Manfred Pranger tenth.

Canada also had reason for smiles with another strong team effort in the tight gates. Brad Spence finished 14th, Julien Cousineau 15th, Michael Janyk 17th and Paul Stutz 25th.

When the calculations were complete, Kostelic was on top of the combined result winning the combined by two seconds over Silvan Zurbriggen of

Switzerland. Romed Baumann was third in combined to give the host

country two podiums for the weekend. The event was a traditional combined using results from Saturday's downhill and Sunday's slalom. It was Kostelic's second straight Hahnekamm combined victory.

He rode out of Kitzbuehel 125,000 euros and 304pts richer than when he walked in.

"That was the biggest race weekend of my entire career," he said. "Taking part in two races at the same time is really difficult because on the one hand you have to ski technically well to achieve success in the combination, but on the other give full power to the slalom discipline. Winning the combined means an important step forward has been made in the overall World Cup position, but there are still many outstanding races. Most important for me is that I stay healthy because only then can I earn more points."

Grange - with no combined ambitions, said he was surprised when he crossed the finish line and saw he was in first place. He injured his back in December and at one point was uncertain he'd be ready to compete in time for Kitzbuehel. "Winning here is something really special," he said. "It feels good to be back at the top again."

Ryan said he thought he had the right decision to skip the World Cup slalom at Wengen in favor of gaining some confidence in Europa Cup races. Returning then to Kitzbuehel, where he first made a World Cup second run a season ago, fit right into the confidence package.

"Kitzbuehel is a real special place," he shouted over the noise of the horns and cheering spectators. He said the slalom hill "doesn't let up anywhere: side hills, steep, rolls, everything."

And next up on the agenda is Schladming, the infamous night slalom on Tuesday. And that's where he scored his only other World Cup points.

INNSBRUCK, Austria - Doctors started trying to wake Hans Grugger from an induced coma on Tuesday, five days after the Austrian skier had brain surgery following a near-fatal downhill training crash.

The University Hospital in Innsbruck said in a statement that "the most recent tests ... have gone so well that the team of doctors has started Hans Grugger's wake-up process."

Doctors were slowly reducing medicines that keep Grugger in a coma to monitor the reactions of the skier's body. The process would take several days, the hospital said.

As soon as Grugger reached sufficient consciousness, doctors would start detailed neurological tests which could give an indication of the skier's recovery.

The 29-year-old Grugger lost balance in a long jump on the demanding Streif course on Thursday. He smashed his head on the icy slope and landed motionless. He was brought to a hospital by helicopter and underwent a 5-hour emergency operation.

After a similar accident two years ago, Swiss skier Daniel Albrecht suffered brain and lung injuries and was kept in an induced coma for 16 days before fully recovering and returning to World Cup ski racing.
