The History of the Eagles on Showtime (1 Viewer)

Watched part 1 last night (up to the breakup).

Seemed that most of the concert footage was from the same show. Either that, or Frye wore the same shirt to all concerts.

One thing it did was remind me of the crush I had on Linda Ronstadt.

Looking forward to part 2 tonight.

Was driving late the other night and on XM came "Long Road Out of Eden" and I was blown away by the track. Went out the next day and bought that album (boycotted it at the time of release due to their Walmart only policy). Still need to ruminate on it, but so far the title track seems like the outlier but my god what an outlier. The lyrics are at points very literal and heavy handed, but the point still strikes and musically its one of the most vital and exciting tracks I've ever heard them do (Hotel California level for me). I"m

glad they reunited for this song alone if nothing else. Doesn't seem to be everyone's cup of tea but I've been addicted to it.

I had always heard that Don Henley was pretty difficult to deal with, but he seemed like the most rational guy in the group.
Finally watched the whole thing last night, and this part is what surprised me the most. Most of the accounts I've read over the years is that Henley was really the most arrogant, obnoxious, hard-headed of the bunch, yet he came across as pretty grounded relative to Frey.

All in all though, a very interesting doc with great behind-the-scenes footage, as mentioned. Had to love the firestorm caught on stage between Frey and Felder right during their set, before things blew up.

J.D. Souther, who was once Frey's roommate and writing partner in the 60s, and who wrote several songs with The Eagles such as Best of My Love, New Kid in Town, Victim of Love, Heartache Tonight, How long, and Don Henley's Heart of the Matter, said that Frey was the root of most of the friction in The Eagles.

Didn't feel sorry for Felder, you had the best gunslinger gig in the world, you didn't sing, you didn't do much of the writing, don't expect an equal share. Henley and especially Frey did come off a little bit like arrogant #######s, but I didn't blame them. This was their baby from the beginning, and they are the Eagles.
This does seem to be the biggest point of contention. Felder felt it was the 3 of them for some reason. Hard to tell how correct that is. Obviously this doc makes it seem all about Frey and Henley but they made the thing. Schmit and Walsh always felt it was Frey and Henley's band so they didn't have the same fundamental issues.

If I were to guess, I would agree with this. When you go away from the music - what are Henley and Frey's interests? Henley is into social causes, Frey got into TV and movies. Henley had a great solo career and had no issue being back in a band. Frey was reluctant to return because he liked being in total control of his career.

Based on that, who do you think has the bigger ego?

It felt like it was missing something. So what if Frey and Felder want to fight?

Felder walks and Eagles carry on...but instead, the whole thing fell apart? They couldn't reunite for over a decade because Frey and Felder couldn't get along?

Seems to me Felder might've had more leverage...maybe contract-wise he had a legitimate claim and they had to resolve some of that before they could consider reuniting.

Frey comes off as the kind of guy who can't admit fault and will not cut his losses...probably didn't want to pay Felder so they stayed broken up waiting for Frey to come around.

Felder definitely comes off as petty for more money but that was Frey's intention with this doc.

As for Meisner...geez...cut the guy some slack. He's a role player that hit it out of the park with one lucky swing. They expect him to hit that note everytime? It's a crazy freaking note...try singing it. I think I'd just have him sing it but tone down that note for the concerts...or let him hit it when he felt it. The song is still beautiful...you can do that song without always having to hit that ceiling. Frey just has no freaking compromise in him.

Henley came off as the most level headed, zen-like guy. I don't know how he dealt with Frey for so long, so closely without snapping but he deserves credit.

Try and Love Again would have been a huge hit if they ever released it. I read some where they tried to leverage Randy to stay with the band with a possible release of his song. It's really too bad. It's one of my favorites. I also always loved the Long Run record growing up. I gotta give it a spin. I saw the Walden Woods show in Foxboro in the early 90's and it was $$. I also went to the Helz Freezes over shows at Great Woods. Those were some great shows and they had fun with the solo stuff. I was in High School and money was tight so I sold a place in line for the ticket purchases to a ticket broker for $200. I had brought a car load of kids from my neighborhood to spend the night standing in line with the promise of a ticket each to see the Eagles. That was a diverse group of Eagles fans. Everyone loved them back then. Good times.

Randy Meisner taking it to the limit

I remember him being a bit unstable from this documentary, but not this bad.

Seems like several rockers in their 60s are starting to go bat#### crazy (Phil Rudd from AC/DC another one) - lingering effects of drugs probably coming to the surface.

Sad info here - Meisner may have gone over the edge and murdered his wife.  :(

Meisner has had issues with alcohol and mental illness for several years. There was good reason why he was not invited to sit in on the "History Of The Eagles" tour, and even Meisner seemed to understand that he was in no shape to participate.

Also, his wife had a bit of reputation as a gold-digger/enabler. Here is a TMZ article from last year where one of Randy's friends accused Randy's wife of keeping him drunk all the time.

Yeah, some big time issues in that family for some time. Not going to help Randy's case though with the judge.
