I really enjoyed it and could have watched another 3 hours of it. I liked the pacing.
Totally agree. I was tired AF and put this on because I read that it was long and slow (giggle). I figured I would fall asleep and catch it the following evening. I made it all the way through easily.I really enjoyed it and could have watched another 3 hours of it. I liked the pacing.
Yeah, I told my wife how long it was (Giggity) and we both expected to have to finish it the next night. I was surprised when I saw it was close to ending.Totally agree. No movie is too long. If it sucks, I'm out in 10 minutes. If it's great, I want to watch it for four hours.Ilov80s said:The “it’s too long crowd” should start editing movies, obviously Thelma Schoonmaker doesn’t know what she’s doing.
What did she do that was great? She was essentially a non factor here. Not sure what she cost but they didn't need her, probably could have saved some change there.Paquin was great as usual and I thought that was handled perfectly. There had to be more than a few of those kids who were disgusted by their fathers.
I would have preferred some young casting as well. Godfather 2 we had Brando and young Deniro playing the same guy. Would have been nice to give a younger actor a shot to make a bigger name for themselves.Jefferson the Caregiver said:It was entertaining, definitely too long but I watched it in two installments and that was fine.
I didn't notice the CGI really, it wasn't a big deal to me. I don't think I would have casted it this way though, the way they did the Godfather with older and younger actors works just fine.
Pesci was great although subdued and man he got old in a hurry.
Thought Pacino was great as well.
I'd say 4 out of 5 stars.
I don't agree that there isn't a current generation of great actors: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Brad Pitt, Leo Dicaprio just to name a few that are still in primeNothing wrong with that of course, but it's extremely depressing to see guys like DeNiro, Pacino, and Pesci hit the twilight of the careers, with seemingly nobody on deck to replace them. At one point I thought Ed Norton would have been headlining the next generation of great actors, but he fell off the face of the planet.
Matt Damon, Daniel Day Lewis (doubt he stays retired), Denzel, Downey Jr, Gyllenhall, Gosling and PhoenixI don't agree that there isn't a current generation of great actors: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Brad Pitt, Leo Dicaprio just to name a few that are still in prime
Don't forget Uncle Jun seeing his court sketch on TV, "You call that a likeness?"Just signed a deal w Amanutflix to write Grumpy Ol' Gangsters for some pension-age Italian director to helm. What other cineMafiosi characters/actors should i write in?
James Gandolfini was pretty darn good at it.I’ll tell you one thing
Nobody plays a dude that breathes heavy and a lot better than De Niro.
Yeah, it’s a pretty close race.James Gandolfini was pretty darn good at it.
I remember the bigger "Tony" got, the heavier his breathing got.Yeah, it’s a pretty close race.

It was a little odd how little popular music the film has when looking at how Scorsese typically will score these movies. I am curious what his thought process was on that. This movie deserved a soundtrack as good as Goodfellas had.
I posted shortly after I watched it that I thought it was very good - not great. This movie deserved a soundtrack as good as Goodfellas had.
That, of course, assumes no God. That's just a restatement of Nietzsche and the existentialists.Reading Milan Kundera and I think he really nailed the message of The Irishman in his 1967 book, The Joke.
“…most people willingly deceive themselves with a doubly false faith; they believe in eternal memory (Of men, things, deeds, peoples) and in rectification (of deed, errors, sins, injustice). Both are sham. The truth lies at the opposite end of the scale: everything will be forgotten and nothing will be rectified. All rectification (both vengeance and forgiveness) will be taken over by oblivion. No one will rectify wrongs; all wrongs will be forgotten.”
Nihilists! #### me. I mean, say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos.Reading Milan Kundera and I think he really nailed the message of The Irishman in his 1967 book, The Joke.

I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, just that it’s the best summary of the theme of the film. That, of course, assumes no God. That's just a restatement of Nietzsche and the existentialists.
Sure. I figured that. I was quibbling with the author's take that there will certainly be no punishment for certain for the players involved.I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, just that it’s the best summary of the theme of the film.
