The Justice System (1 Viewer)

I realize my way of thinking is not "normal" per say.  It requires you to think outside the box I guess.

My argument is for personal liberty and there are millions of people locked up in this country because we do NOT have personal liberty.

I cant do coke, marijuana, acid, mushrooms, etc because all of those things are against the law.  There should not be laws against drug use.  Its a personal decision to use, not the governments.  Now I understand if I use these drugs and hurt someone else in the process, I should be punished.  I'm not going to use drugs and then go on a joyride in my car, or wave a pistol around, etc.  I would use in my home by myself.  I cant do that now WITHOUT breaking the law.
Who knows what "normal" is anymore.

I think you're overstating that you can't use drugs in your home without breaking the law. Law enforcement is not looking for people using drugs in their homes. The only real obstacle is buying drugs. That seems to be the obvious hurdle due to the possibility of undercover LE officers. After that, what possible reason could anyone have for suspecting that you have drugs on your person?

Also, the issue with personal liberty is that it's not just about yourself. What you do to your body does effect the people around you. Do you think that a parent should be allowed to do a line of coke at home, with their kid in the room? Or the other room? What if the kid is an infant and can't take care of itself?

Nashville has approved Amendment 1, creating a community oversight board for the Metro police department, by a wide margin. Quite a victory for a movement led by black Nashvillians and black women in particular.
I was torn on this one.  I agree with oversight and independent oversight.  The language of this amendment was a bit strange though.  Some of the biggest complaints about it though were pretty hollow.

A good idea...implementation and details will be interesting to see in the coming months.

The board will be able to independently investigate allegations of misconduct by MNPD officers and issue reports assessing such allegations, as well as make policy recommendations. It will consist of 11 members: seven people — at least four of whom must live in “economically distressed communities” — nominated by community organizations or by private petition signed by 50 Davidson County residents; two people nominated by members of the Metro Council; and two people nominated by the mayor. All nominations for the board will require approval from a majority of the Metro Council. The amendment says the board will require an annual budget of no less than $1.5 million for staff and investigators.

I think it's really commendable that seats on the oversight board are distributed 7/4 for a majority civilian split, but still allowing for input from the depts.  Definitely a promising development.

Fwiw a police monitor over the PD would be more effective. Community boards are bound to become political and adversarial and ultimately oversight is the responsibility of the city council in any event. What happens when the board and the council disagree? More conflict. - But, good luck, oversight and transparency in any event is the key.

This is outrageous.

NYPD to Innocent Business Owners: Give Up Your Rights or Get Shut Down

When undercover NYPD officers offered to sell stolen electronics to customers at Sung Cho’s laundromat, near the northern tip of Manhattan, Sung never imagined the sting operation could be used as a pretext to shut down his business. But that’s exactly what happened. Attorneys for the city threatened Sung with eviction merely because a “stolen property” offense had happened at his business.

The city presented Sung with a choice: See his business shut down or sign an agreement giving up constitutional rights—including his Fourth Amendment right to be free from warrantless searches of his business. Faced with the imminent closure of his laundromat, Sung had no real choice but to sign.
