The Marjorie Taylor Greene Thread (1 Viewer)

Yeah, I don't agree with this.  This is literally a subform to discuss politics.  Highly polarizing political figures will frequently do or say things worthy of discussion.  Having a thread dedicated to certain individuals seems like a reasonable way to categorize those discussions.
First, I appreciate disagreement.

But to the point, there are lots of reasons why our current problems exist, but a microphone in front of the fringes is absolutely one of them. The right did it to AOC because doing so engages their base and increases profits for their media and the left is doing it with MTG for the same purpose. Neither of those things solves any of our existing problems though; they perpetuate them.

Right.  One is demonized because of her politics.  The other is demonized because she spreads lies and is insane.
I have several conservative friends who have attempted to draw an equivalency between AOC and Greene. They've displayed high levels of self-satisfaction and pleasure when making their claims, almost as if such statements are some sort of "dunk" on the left.

My first thought is that such attempts to equalize are just reactionary and cynical defense mechanisms.

My second thought is that if such attempts are sincere, then it's a sign that they no longer have the ability to distinguish between "policy" and "insanity".

To me, it's pure tribalism.  A false equivalence is drawn simply because blue team bad, thus player on blue team bad.  This is amplified by media and social media training them to believe AOC is a Socialist devil.

Agree with this and frankly, this #### sells or gets clicks or whatever metric you are using to measure success today. I don't believe AOC or MTG represent their parties or their parties beliefs. I think a lot of it is just "look at me" but it's hyper inflated on the national stage they are currently on.

Would be refreshing to see someone, ANYONE from the middle step up and take the spotlight off of them but that's boring and people don't want boring in their 30 second news clip.

"I believe that socialism is inherently wrong" is an example of a political belief.

"I believe that school shootings are a hoax and that the children aren't really dead" is not.

Those who attempt to create an equivalence between AOC and Greene are blurring the lines between two disparate concepts, between reality and fantasy.

Further example of the pointlessness of this "unity" narrative. These people are not reachable. And they are dangerously out of step with reality.

I don't, either.  AOC is infinitely more influential, so just a little crazy from her has orders of magnitude more effect on the governed than the loony crazy of Greene.
Consider MTG is just beginning to get her notoriety.  We've seen how easily the MAGA clan can be manipulated, so the jury's out on what kind of effect her lunacy might have.

Just breaking: after Kevin McCarthy refuses to remove Marjorie Taylor Greene from her committee, Steny Hoyer calls for a House vote for later today.
https://www.washingtonpost.com
Because of Parkland, the Republicans in the 2 seats flipped in Miami-Dade, Gimenez & Salazar, are in a tough spot politically. But it should be easy vote to remove Greene from the education committee assignment.

Taylor Greene is no Neanderthal. She’s college educated, a product of her culture. Referring to her as a “loon” ignores the fact that many of her ideas have been carefully nurtured by right wing media and tolerated by right wing politicians for decades. Guys like McConnell can criticize her all they want (and I’m glad they are) but they created her.

OMG - tim....is this you?!?  Perhaps your greatest post ever.

I am spending quite a bit more time in OC these days as I follow my daughters softball team.  I will DM you the next time I have a free hour or two; would love to buy you a beer and shake your hand.

I’d look forward to that - though I don’t shake hands anymore!

Kevin McCarthy’s statement is so incredibly lame. He’s really putting his party in deep #### here. Or perhaps they’re putting him there.
Meanwhile, at the same time as Greene is not being punished, GOP House members are actually expecting Liz Cheney to apologize for voting to impeach Trump. She won’t.

Kevin McCarthy does not indicate that he'll take any action against Marjorie Taylor Greene. He said that, in his meeting with her, she recognized her words now have "much greater meaning." Greene has not yet indicated that in public.

Much greater meaning?
I won't feel like Republicans have dealt with the issue properly until Susan Collins announces her concern.

Jake Sherman reporting that MTG got a standing ovation from some GOP members after speaking for 2 minutes in their meeting this evening.

At what point do we stop suggesting the GOP isn’t this awful, when they keep telling and showing us over and over again that the ignorance, corruption, and grift is a feature, not a bug?

Yep, Rubio will be hard to beat in 2022. But Nikki has hemp and weed industry support, along with weed user votes. Maybe she runs for governor, which will be easier to win.
Will Rubio beat out Ivanka in the GOQ primary?

I apologize, but who is Jake Sherman?   and how many is some?

Former Politco reporter who founded an outfit called Punchbowl News, which focuses on Washington insider stuff.

Really need to stop calling this the GOP.  It's Q or TP (trump party or toilet paper, totally interchangable)

how many attended this conference?  are we talking the whole GOP?  that would be disappointing.
When People refer to the “House GOP Conference” they are referring to the subset of Republican members of the House and any independent who typically votes with them (for instance, Angug King and Bernie Sanders are independents who conference with Senate Democrats).

As I think the GOP has about 210 members in the House, the report would suggest a little over 100 GOP members joined the ovation.

It's a meeting of the House Republican Conference (i.e., all Republican members of the House).

Roughly half of them gave Marjorie Taylor Greene a standing ovation.

30 of them have asked to speak out regarding Liz Cheney.

As someone that has lost a young family member to a random act of violence, to hell with all of them.  That's putting it nicely.  What horrible, horrible, "people".

Sincerely sorry for your loss, and hesitate to post, but you mean all of them, anyone that may vote R over D?      Anyone R isn't a people?

Thanks.  In many ways has effectively ruined my life.  The post was directed at her and all of the R's that gave her a standing ovation.  The parent's of the children murdered at Sandy Hook and every other school shooting should be called to the capitol to shame these sorry excuses for humans.  It's sickening.

Well you’ve been making this argument for the last 4 years. I’ve tried to believe otherwise. But I have to say it’s really depressing.

The latest Republican “threat” is that if Democrats carry through with forcing a vote on Taylor Greene, Republicans will propose a vote on removing Ilhan Omar from her committees; Ms. Omar has made vile anti-Semitic comments in the past.
Of course there is a difference here. Omar was called on by Nancy Pelosi to apologize, and Omar did apologize and has spent the last year meeting with Jewish groups to learn about avoiding using anti-Semitic tropes in the future. Personally I’m no fan of Omar and I fervently wish she was not a member of Congress. But this attempt by members of the GOP to avoid addressing Taylor Greene and simply attack the other side is just awful.

Is Marjorie Taylor Greene the immediate  future of the GOP?

Highest Q Score currently is Nikki Haley (pushing Ted Cruz out for a while)

Highest combined E Score and Q Score is Ron De Santis

Disproportionate Q Score ( i.e. relative punching weight relative to their appearance in the daily media cycle) - Kristi Noem (thirsty men apparently love her) and bizarrely freshman Young Kim of HOR CA-39. ( RNC would like to capitalize on Korean American candidates long term) Tom Cotton has pull inside the core Republican base but not so much outside of it.

Most likely RNC ticket combo if not Trump in 2024 - Some form of Nikki Haley and Dan Crenshaw

Josh Hawley was someone the DNC wanted to gut and kneecap badly and the Capitol riots did him no favors. His youth was dangerous since he brought a different energy to Congress.

The RNC is grooming Wesley Hunt, he checks all the boxes, but he's six years away, more likely two full cycles.

Complete sleeper would be Denzel Washington. He's a closet conservative, like Chris Pratt and Matthew McConaghey, but would garner the black vote, quietly major sections of Hollywood, the young vote, and many major blocks of female voters.

Four years is a long time, so it's too early to discount Cruz. Some of his pathway will be when the DNC attempts to pack SCOTUS. He's going to be front and center to that.

CNN's Van Jones said something interesting that was ignored, he said Kayleigh McEnany keeps getting overlooked and underestimated and she makes people pay for that, and he's right. Aside from Crenshaw, she is the only one, as of today, who can immediately lock in Trump's base. If she walks into any debate cycle, it will go viral nation wide, she will bodybag anyone dumb or crazy enough to want to trade punches with her. Three full cycles from now, she could be lethal.

MTG is a politically inexperienced middle aged straight white woman without a military background, which has literally no currency value in modern American politics. Why anyone would call her the future of the GOP does not line up with actual political reality nor actual political strategy.

You didn't really want a straight answer to your question. You just wanted to paint Republicans in a negative light ( i.e. MTG is the best the GOP can do, so they must all suck rotten eggs) But I gave you a straight answer anyway.

I think Democrats here are failing to see the 2024 pathway. It will be either Biden ( who carries the legacy of the pandemic and this crashing economy) or Harris ( where her personal scandal will sink her) as establishment types. With AOC threatening to drive M4A to get the ticket. With Gavin Newsom as the "compromise" choice. That's a platter that's not going to excite too many people.

Nikki Haley and Dan Crenshaw aren't going to excite anyone either. But it's not like the DNC is pushing out a lineup of Curry/Thompson/Green/Durant and Igoudala here. The projected DNC lineup carries it's own baggage and internal strife for 2024. The RNC doesn't need All Stars, they just need to get a few more votes than their projected competition. It's like leftists here just want to ignore that to keep screaming Orange Man Bad.

I lived in CT when that happened.   people in my firm lost children.     share your pain tangentially.   that was real,  don't care for anyone who says that wasn't real.

honestly asking, what did she say during this conference?    2nd time i've asked, no one's provided quotes,  I want to know to know if I should be outraged as well.
At this point, maybe just Google it?  Or you know, stop playing coy and admit you won’t be outraged no matter what?

Jeffrey Epstein could have delivered the Gettysburg Address and I’d have probably remained seated.

Another difference is that Republicans were already calling for Omar to be rebuked and/or stripped of assignments. They want Democrats to adhere to standards which they refuse to honor themselves.
