Is the cover better than the original? I think this song works better as a duet because the attraction/rejection in the lyrics come off less creepy because their feelings are mutual. I love the ease of the harmonies between Buddy and Julie--their voices blend together as only people who've sung together a lot can. I'm favoring the cover here but might have been dissuaded if Thompson sang it with his ex-wife Linda.

My father and stepmother bought Rumor and Sigh when it came out because of the rave reviews it got. They loved the songs but hated the production. I agreed with them. I always wondered if 1952 Vincent Black Lightning was the song from it that caught fire because it's acoustic and free from the questionable decisions Froom made.

I haven't been following for a week or three. A different music thing has my hyperfocus. It's a legit symptom of ADD, btw. I ran into my kid's old guitar teacher from 10 years ago. He knows I've struggled forever to learn the instrument. We talked about it. He invited me in for a check up. I went. He watched me struggle. Handed me a classical guitar. Nylon strings are easier on my tender fingers. The wider neck helps my issue with the strings being too close together. In an hour he had me playing better than I ever have, which still sucks, but still. It's not nearly as cool sounding as an electric with a modeling amp, but it's sure easier for me to play. I bought a cheapy for $130. It needed a little work to be like the teacher's. I can't put it down. 8-10-15 hours a day... hyperfocus.

So I'll comment on my last 4 songs and maybe catch up on the thread and/or playlists.

9 pointer. Devo - Satisfaction. I chuckled. I was a morning janitor in a Bullock's the summer of 79. Vacuumed a couple miles of carpet every morning. The head janitor would blast punk over the store's pa system before it opened. This was by far the best song to vacuum to. Better than the original? For vacuuming, yes.

10 pointer. Airbag - Easy All-Stars with Horace Andy. I had a Massive Attack song here with Mos Def rapping Bad Brains lyrics. Welp, it wasn't a cover so this was a last minute sub. A reggae rhythm, droning shoegazy guitar, some horns, Andy's smooth vocals. Up my ally. I think I'd rather listen to this than Radiohead. Hope some of you enjoyed. And Andy connected me to the Masive Attack non-cover.

11 pointer. Roxanne - Lacy Sturm. Lacy's such a bad@***. Sting sings as if he's lamenting a friend or potential lover's chosen profession. Lacy wails like it's her sister and it's killing her. She puts a stamp on it, doesn't stay with the original, and growls appropriately for the topic. I love the Police, but for these lyrics, I think Lacy has it right.

12 pointer. Pour Some Sugar On Me - Hayseed Dixie. Chuckled again. I noticed someone chose The Gourds doing Gin and Juice. It's the one I mentioned my daughter insisted on. It was on my list until I heard Pour Some and just liked it better. I listened to a bunch of these humorous bluegrass covers. Fun and now I have the guitar for them. I kept going back to this one because to me it just worked. Also, I remember Val taking the original and some thumper thing happened so I defended it. So this is the one made me think of him. If I keep improving the finger picking I may have to cover it myself.

Hey everyone, my suspension ends today, but I have decided to leave this site for good. I gave it a lot of thought while I was on my break - and while I hate to leave in the middle of a draft, I just don’t feel like I can stay on a site that treated me so unjustly.

I was reported by some dumb fat hick for an innocuous joke that I guess hit a bit too close to home (maybe Johnny can’t read) - and the moderator put zero thought or applied zero logic and just suspended me - maybe it was revenge for calling out Joe in here for halting that one draft or maybe the moderators just gave in and placated whiny tool that uses the report button because he was too dumb to tell when something is a joke and something is a personal attack.

I don’t know but I don’t need this place enough to just bend over and take it.

I’ll miss everyone in this thread and many of the great people here - and perhaps this is a “cut off your nose to spite your face” situation but I have to do what I think is right - and even if I’m not a paying customer I can’t in any way support a business that treats people like they do here.

I’ll leave the account open for a few days to check PMs (I’m willing to stay in contact to the extent anyone wishes to), but otherwise so long everyone and thanks for the music.

This news really angers me. Not angry at you but at the entire situation. I always appreciate your take on things and will miss it.

Johnny is a bit of a troll himself in his angry old man way but I’m not bothered by him.

I’m not leaving because of him - who cares about that hick?

I think I was either targeted because I called out Joe in here for his gaffe in stopping the dead musician draft over a joke or the moderators are complete morons. I just don’t want to support Joe’s business in any way after being slapped around for no reason.

Your friendship has transcended mere online stuff and you now know me as a real person and I think I know who you are. It would be a shame if you leave over something like this. I'm not going to minimize it or say it isn't a big deal, because it is to you, but I'd ask that you reconsider drawing this particular line and think about how important it is that justice always be done on everyone's behalf. It could have been an error in judgment, a poor mod decision, or a poor wording of a joke rather than something born of animus or something personal.

19. Everybody's Talkin' - Seldom Scene (Harry Nilsson Fred Neil)

FWIW, Nilsson's version came out 2 years after the original version by the song's author was released, so oops on my part.

For those who may not remember round 2 of the MAD draft series, The Seldom Scene was my band of choice, and though this song didn't officially make the list, I did link it in my final write-up. Since then, I have given this version a chance and I will say that based on its own merits, this iteration of my and my father's favorite bluegrass band has successfully paid tribute to the original 'Scene and also demonstrated that they can move forward in the same spirit of the original.

Cher had just come off a big hit with Sonny Bono called I Got You Babe. Trying to follow the discography of Cher is tricky. Solo stuff, stuff with Sonny. This song was her first big solo hit after her two previous chart hits fell outside the top 10. It was written by Sonny. Its amazing to think she was only 18/19 when she started her run and shes still a popular artist almost 50 years later.

Shortly after Chers hit, Nancy Sinatra was coming off her own big hit, These Boots are Made for Walking and looking to fill an album. The rearranged version of Bang Bang was slowed down, the instrumentation changed and chosen to close the album. Albums came and went quickly in those days and Nancy had about 6 in 3 years. Quentin Tarantino was a big fan of this song and chose it to open his Kill Bill Volume 1 movie. To great effect.

Fatigue was starting to hit Abba. A gruelling schedule, relationships falling apart and over saturation leading to a deteriorating fan base. This was the last song written for the album that would be named after this song. The lyrics by Bjorn were basically an insight into his and Agnethas relationship. A weird dynamic. Although it went to #1 in the UK and most of Europe, it flopped elsewhere. In Australia it only reaching #77 and #45 in the US.

Most of the covers I heard for this song are from Scottish artists. The name checking of Glasgow “I was sick and tired of everything, when you called me last night from Glasgow” is some sort of pride for them. Camera Obscura fit that description. An indie band from surprise surprise, Glasgow. Their best charting song reached #101 on the UK charts, with 2 albums reaching the bottom of the top 40. This song works great in a down beat mode. There’s always a certain sadness with a lot of Abba’s songs, despite the upbeat music. Vocals are slightly eccentric here, but the arrangement and music are great.

Next up, the biggest Abba song of them all. Doing a simple cover doesnt do it justice. Let’s go crazy, let’s get nuts with this version. Apologies in advance.

Heaven on Their Minds - Tim Minchin (Youtube ftw)

Jesus Christ Superstar, the 1970 concept album, music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Tim Rice, was my introduction to Jesus. My childhood friend who gave me that ticket to see the 9ers/Lions was listening to it daily. His dad was a church deacon. My 8 year old buddy was witnessing to me. Which is odd because it wasn't well received by Christians. Webber and Rice framed the last three days of the greatest story ever told through the eyes of unbelieving Judas. Spoiler alert: There's a crucifixion but no resurrection. Without the resurrection the story is kind of useless to Christians. But 8 year old me loved the music and the story was intense. It made me feel informed about this Jesus guy, and I listened to it in that house over and over again. The songs were often stuck in my head. I still know all the lyrics.

55 years later Ian Gillan's Jesus from the album still sets the bar. No surprise there. it was originally written for the stage but lacked backing. In 73 it became a film. Of course we went to the first showing in our little town. Still intense for an 11 year old. 51 years later Carl Anderson's Judas still sets the bar. It hit the stage in the early 70s too. It was a global hit and set the record in London for longest running play. 8 years. Dozens of big name performers have tackled the roles ever since. John Legend being the latest Jesus. I think it's Webber's best work. A controversial take for sure.

In 2012 Webber worked with a cast which kept to his original idea of a rock-based musical. I watched it 3 times in December while y'all were doing Christmas music. So my favorite performance makes my list. Not so intense for a 61 year old, but still a piece of art. In this iteration they made a brilliant casting decision. An atheist, comedian and singer known for some pretty virulent attacks on Christianity. Tim Minchin. He embraced the part perfectly. This Judas was a friend to Jesus and just wanted all the messiah nonsense to stop before they got in trouble with the Roman occupiers. Minchin said he felt the part deep in his heart and every word of Heaven on Their Minds was from a perspective he fully embraced. He's not acting, he's feeling. He's not the vocalist Anderson was, but the performance struck me as very very good. So Youtube ftw on this one.

I forgot to testify, but Jesus is just alright with me. The church, well, somn thumper somn.

My true “favorite” that qualified was Pais Tropical, that was written by Jorge Ben Jor but first released by Wilson Simonal, but decided to stay away from a song that appeared in my MAD 31 list for Jorge Ben Jor.

As I had some Fela Kuti in my MAD worldwide list, Jorge Ben Jor scatting to some Fela Kuti hits a sweet spot for me. The Red Hot organization has put out a couple of albums of Fela Kuti cover songs, featuring some pretty famous artists, with proceeds benefiting AIDS research.

Sometime in the early 70's, the church I grew up in replaced their organist with a young, leggy female who, along with our youngish pastor, introduced the congregation to contemporary Christian-themed music, and the youth group's Easter pageant included Hosanna.

I never got the hate towards this show; to me, any time someone can inject The Big Guy into the zeitgeist, it's not a bad thing.

Oh, and to be clear, while I did have that 'born again' moment almost 28 years ago, I've learned over time to never call myself 'Christian'.

Not going to comment about 'The Church', something about not being able to cast the first stone.
