Onto the #18s. I’ll keep this short today (don’t I always?). I dropped back to 4 each, but don’t let that make you think I didn’t enjoy the playlist. It was just a day where the known favorites were a bit thinner without mentioning certain songs again.

Recognized by title alone: 20
Sounded familiar: 1
Knew from M-AD countdowns: 2
Didn’t Know: 10

Selected Favorites:
Now That We’ve Found Love - Third World
Renegades of Funk - Rage Against the Machine.
Solitary Man - Chris Isaak
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack

Hadn’t heard before, but liked
Heart of Gold - Charles Bradley
Long Time Gone - Ruthie Foster
Waitin’ for a Superman - Iron & Wine
Black Hole Sun - Norah Jones

I'm sorry for the loss of your great Aunt, Pip. Her life sounds interesting. I think there really is something to that generation being called The Greatest Generation.

I noticed (and fixed) that in one of my comments yesterday, I said Eleanor Rugby instead of Eleanor Rigby. I hate when I misspell stuff, and it's worse when it gets caught in a quote.

Eleanor Rugby picks up a ball on a field where a game had been played
she's not a team
Waits by the goal post, wearing the cleats that she bought on sale at the store
what hell for?
:violin:

My mom and brother walk like a duck. Their feet go outward like they are wearing fins when they walk. When I was little, I had to wear corrective shoes. I hated them. I had a habit of sitting on my left foot if I was sitting on the floor, and so my left foot turned inward a little. I can't remember how long I had to wear them, but they were ugly. Whenever my foot was corrected, my mom said she would get me any pair of shoes I wanted. I picked out some Dingo boots. I loved those things. I've always had a big love for shoes, but foot pain and skin issues over the last 4 years have limited what I can wear. I feel like I've reverted back to my corrective shoe days.
My feet turn terribly inward - I guess they call it pigeon-toed but it's more like walking like you have something up your butt (at least according to people who are less kind). When I was a baby, they tried to correct by making me wear shoes with a metal bar in between pointing my feet outward. My mom saved them so I still have them somewhere in the basement if only to remind the occasional visitor how I was tortured as a small child. I also had to wear orthopedic shoes through first or second grade. When I got to pick my first shoes, I went with Zzzips. :crying:

Songs That I Knew the Cover and the Original

Uruk-Hai: Now That We Found Love - Third World (O'Jays) - I see Heavy D has already been referenced by rock. Love that take too.
Just Win Baby: Renegades Of Funk - Rage Against the Machine (Afrika Bambaataa)
zamboni/shuke: Changes - Charles Bradley (Black Sabbath) - I only know the cover b/c of Big Mouth.

Songs That I Only Know the Original but Really Enjoyed the Cover

JMLs secret identity: Dancing Queen - Puddles Pity Party (Abba)
Andy Dufresne: No Rain – Pickin’ on Series (Blind Melon) - not really a fan of the original (maybe due to the Bee Girl) but the cover is great.

Song I Like That I Only Know the Cover but not the Original

rockaction: The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face – Roberta Flack (Peggy Seeger)

Songs I Like That I Didn't Know Either Version

John Maddens Lunchbox: Pistol Grip Pump - Rage against the Machine (Volume 10)
Chaos34: Black Hole Sun - Norah Jones (Soundgarden) - another one that I can take-or-leave the original but really liked what Norah did with it.

Already “Covered” in an Earlier Post

Raging weasel: Cum On Feel the Noize – Quiet Riot (Slade)
Mt. Man: Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers (Stevie Wonder)
Ilov80s: Hounds of Love - The Futureheads (Kate Bush)
Val Rannous: The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - Headstones (Gordon Lightfoot)

Getting into Phoenix Thursday was a breeze, choosing my rental car was a breeze, and then...I waited nearly 40 minutes in line just to get out of the parking lot at Hertz.
In Oakland last week, had something happen for the first time in my 30 years of renting cars. I have Budget Fast Break so picked up my paperwork outside and went right to the car. Pulled out of the airport and within 3 minutes, the gas light came on (and the range was at 0). Then the charge indicator starting flashing and said I had 1 mile. Was afraid I wouldn't make it back to the rental car center so pulled over at the nearby gas station and the Dodge Hornet was indeed running on fumes. All the paperwork of course said it was delivered with a full tank. Was initially pissed but then relieved that I hadn't actually gotten on the freeway before noticing. Called Budget to complain and they gave me 3 days free on a future rental and told me to return it empty, which would be noted in computer. Of course, we return it with a 1/4 tank, explain the situation to the intake person, and the bill arrives in my email a few minutes later with a $60 fuel surcharge. Another phone call managed to clear it up.

Since I'm already rambling, the previous trip when we returned are car to OAK, the folks that pulled into the lane in front of us had the back window smashed out of their rental minivan. They had picked it up not 20 minutes earlier, stopped at the nearest Starbucks, and while they were inside, all their luggage got stolen. It was a family of five in town to watch their kid/sibling make his major league pitching debut for the A's that afternoon. Checked the box score later and it didn't go much better than the rental car experience.

Lesson for the future - maybe stop flying into OAK to save a few bucks.

If Ticketmaster and Xfinity didn't exist, I might say rental car agencies are the worst companies on the planet.

I reserved a truck from Enterprise once. Not online. On the phone with my local Enterprise. I was there at 8am when they opened. They rented it to some dude who got there early. When someone rents a truck it isn't usually for just transportation. They're expensive and get crappy gas mileage and aren't so comfortable. Trucks are rented by people who need trucks. I really needed a truck. I had promised things to someone that required a truck. The truck was still there with the guy who got it going over it. I suggested they explain to him that I'd reserved it. They wouldn't. I felt myself becoming a customer service irate. I hate being that guy. So I used it as an opportunity to do this almost word for word.

Sloop John B – The Beach Boys (traditional/first known release by The Weavers)
Song: first vote
Cover artist: first vote
Original artist: N/A

I struggled with how to attribute this one and settled on traditional. Secondhandsongs lists it under "The John B. Sails" and calls it a "Bahamian folk song, first published in Richard Le Gallienne's article "Coral Islands and Mangrove-Trees" on page 82 of the December, 1916 issue of Harper's Magazine." That site has the first release listed as The Weavers in November 1950 as "The Wreck of the John B" but also indicates that Cleveland Simmons Group recorded it in July 1935 as "Histe Up the John B. Sail" and released it "more than 10 years later."

Also, with this selection today, I feel like I've moved into a new tier in terms of my favorites. This and everything above it could almost be interchangeable in terms of how much I love them.

Nobody But Me - Human Beinz (Isley Brothers)
Song: first vote
Cover artist: first vote
Original artist: first vote
This may be the only case where a mid-60s garage band toned down AND out-rhythmed an R&B original.

The Isley's original is nuts and feels like it's going to fall apart at any second - which is typical for a Bert Burns recording (seriously - SOMEONE needs to make a movie or TV show about Berns' life). The singing is totally demented and I can't even tell what all of the instruments are.

The Human Beinz made several of the greatest moves in rock history on this cover:

1. That opening feedback chord hits your solar plexus like a tactical nuke.
2. Then the drums lock in like everything that'll ever happen is preordained.
3. Next, the lead singer drops in and it seems like he is saying "that drum isn't enough; I'll help".
4. The vocal stomp on every dance named by the other bandmembers is as if thunder was striking in your living room.
5. There's a berserk guitar solo that lasts about 10 seconds.
6. A tambourine decides to deafen you after the bridge.

I know nothing about this band. As far as I know, they never did anything again. Maybe they were kind of a studio supergroup like Toto. All I know is, I'm glad this record got made and released. This is rock and roll, baby.

15 pointers I like:

Nobody But Me - Human Beinz
Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon - Urge Overkill
Bang A Boomerang - Black Incvars
Twist & Shout - The Beatles
Times Like These - Glen Campbell
Big Mouth Strikes Again - Tree People 🌴
Time Of The Season ⌚ - Dave Matthews
He Stopped Loving Her Today - Leon Russell
99 Red Balloons 🎈 - Goldfinger
Afro Blue - Andy Summers

I know I’m way too competitive (I am actually pretty chill now and have figured it out as life has gone on) but if I have a song and someone else took it for lower points than me and gets some positive comments for it, my first reaction isn’t “awesome they like a song, that I like even more” it’s “damn it, I should have ranked that song lower so I could have been the first”.

I am such an idiot lol

15 Points - Twist and Shout - The Beatles (The Top Notes)
Original

The Top Notes were a little known group that had greatness around them. For a start, this song, done better by the Isley Brothers who took it to the top 20 before the Beatles knocked it out of the park. This song was also one of the first songs produced by Phil Spector and you could tell he still had a lot to learn. The band also would soon after this have a certain singer called Dionne Warwick join them for a short while

Cover

Some little English group looking for a break included this cover on their debut US release, Introducing the Beatles. A sort of compilation of their first 2 UK albums. This album clocked in at a paltry 28 minutes, but those were the days. As others have mentioned this is a brilliant vocal by Lennon and mimicked brilliantly by Mr Ferris Bueller who reintroduced the song to me and another generation in the 80s.

Next up another song we have seen taken by someone else.

One of my friends was in Oakland last week to get their house ready for the new renters, and for the renters to sign a year lease. They had a hard time finding anyone willing to sign for only one year, but my friends are moving back in a year to year 1/2. Renters there have more rights than landlords, so the lease is tricky. Anyway, when my friend flew back to NC, the renters called her and asked if her car ever got stolen from the house, because their car gotten stolen their first night there. The renters moved from a neighborhood a mile or two away, and their moving truck got the catalytic converter stolen off of it that same night in front of the house they moved from. Lots of crime there.

15 Points - Bang-a-Boomerang - Black Ingvars (Abba)
Original

An early number by Abba. The lyrics compare the "message of love" with the returning boomerangswhich the Aboriginal Australians developed. Released as an A Side in France only of all places. Would have thought Australia would have been a natural. For some reason this is the first Abba song I heard or remembered anyway, so has a sentimental place in my heart

Cover

Imagine AC/DC covering Abba with Jon Bon Jovi on lead vocals and this is what you get. The opening refrain of AC/DC’s TNT introduces this track by Swedish comedy metal-lists Black Ingvars who do strange and interesting covers. This is probably the most fun Abba cover here. Totally out of left field . Hawks64 is correct on his corrections btw

Next up we return to normality with a cover of one of Abbas most beloved songs

Brightest Smile In Town – The Gregg Allman Band (Ray Charles)
Song: first vote
Cover artist: first vote
Original artist: first vote
I haven't commented much on my songs, because I feel most are known, but this one maybe not. Ray Charles wrote this song with a couple other fellas back in '63. It was the B-side of a single. Ray's original is very good, but Gregg's version is my favorite. Gregg's bluesy vocals are outstanding, and I love his piano playing, and the arrangement of strings and subtle horns. It's one of my favorite recordings by him solo or in The Allman Brothers Band.

zamboni:

Marquee Moon - Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs (Television)
For some reason, this doesn’t appear on Spotify like the rest of their covers album on which it appears (part 2). So only YouTube here. :kicksrock:
I think it’s a bonus track — Vol 2 has a ton of them. The proper albums are on Spotify but the bonus tracks aren’t.
Makes sense - I actually heard it on Spotify first but it must have been yanked. Too bad - not an easy song to cover and they do it very admirably.

17. Brown Eyed Girl - Jimmy Buffett (Van Morrison)

I've talked on this board before about my college days working at a Tex-Mex place called the Terrapin Taco House near the University of Maryland, and how in the latter part of my tenure there that Jimmy's music was a staple, as the owners were Parrotheads. I've also mentioned that in order to cope with the place, various employees and I would alter the lyrics of whatever was playing at any given time, often with references to our food, i.e., 'rock-and-roll' was easily replaced by 'guac-a-mol'. Anyway, between the classic rock station we were always tuned to, and Jimmy Buffett when we weren't, Brown Eyed Girl came up at least once every time I worked there. Even though it didn't really lend itself to good/funny alterations with Tex-Mex food, it did provide the opportunity to add something local to it:

Making love in the green grass,
Behind Byrd Stadium with you...

Sloop John B – The Beach Boys (traditional/first known release by The Weavers)
Song: first vote
Cover artist: first vote
Original artist: N/A
Did not know this was a cover. Some of the most beautiful singing, playing, and imagery ever.

I knew it was a cover of something very very old that had likely been modified. It's my favorite Beach Boys song and that's saying something. The attribution thing made me move along. I feared Krista. She is very scary sometimes. So she took it.

Glad it's on a playlist. There's never a bad time for Sloop John B.

When I was invited to go to that playoff game, I clicked on the google map of San Francisco. I wanted a better idea of the location of my buddy's offices. I hit street view. If you ever visited SF between the 80s and 00s, you know what a beautiful city it is. If it comes up in conversation, I alway call it the most beautiful city in the country. Maybe one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Wow, that street view made me sad. I couldn't stop virtual driving the streets. Homeless, trash, grafiti. I'd been told it was. I know what's happened to parts of LA, but this was much worse. Oakland has to be even worse.

I rewatched Ferris Bueller recently for grins. This scene is where the day off officially jumps the shark, and it's glorious.

There's this song that is by far one of my favorite sing a longs. It's no secret I consider myself an old parrot head. For years every time I heard the song I thought it would be a great one for Jimmy to cover. Then one day there it was on Youtube. I felt so smart. And it isn't this one, but I'm glad he covered it too. (y)

SF is still a beautiful city unless you're downtown. It's a walkable, bikeable city of neighborhoods with unique character (and characters).

Downtown was hit hard by the quadruple blow of the pandemic, remote work, layoffs in tech and the death of retail. It's incredible what a ghost town it is now. I worked downtown for my entire career and it used to be busy and vibrant during the work week. It was always kind of dead on evenings and weekends but the loss of the daytime crowd and their money has started the doom loop.

Cities always change and it'll be interesting to see what happens next. SF retains its advantages of location and climate and continues to be a destination for young, creative people.

Well, I didn't actually see it. Stayed in San Jose and didn't get north of Levi's, so happy to hear I was just cruising a bad section. Since you're close to the restaurant mentioned earlier, you're about 10-12 blocks down Van Ness from his offices where I started my digital driving around.
