The Next 100 best movies from the 80's (1 Viewer)

48 (tie). Creepshow
Lambskin - #17
Scoresman - #60

This was probably in my 80-90 range. Fun flick.

Love this movie

Hard to rank the individual skits, Father’s Day probably my favorite. Love the “oh no meteor ****” quote in the King one

Feel like this was another one that was always on cable and the anthology format you could just hop in

Sequel was OK (I can’t imagine anyone has it listed I had it at 66) but man that Raft scene did a number on me. Growing up in Michigan I went to numerous random lakes that had a similar raft and every time all I could think about was that sick *** blob in the water. Even like 2-3 years ago went on a scout trip with the kids and they had some lake (swamp) with a raft and of course my kids wanted to swim to it
The Crate and the last skit with Mr Pratt were my fav’s….but I love Creepshow. Absolute classic.

48 (tie). Karate Kid Part 2
Scoresman - #16

Personally, not very memorable.
This should come as no shock to anyone who saw me defend the first movie in the first 100 thread.

As a sequel, this movie does what it’s supposed to: it builds off the original and escalates everything. The villain is more dangerous, the setting is new and interesting, etc. as such, I feel it is an under appreciated sequel.

What I really love about it though is that it’s the first time we really see Daniel and Mr. Miyagi move from just a student/mentor relationship to more of a father/son one. The first movie was more about Daniel, and this one was more about Miyagi

The final fight will never compare to the original, but it was also much more intense with much higher stakes. Chozen was a great villain.

Also Glory of Love by Peter Cetera.

This pick makes BTTF2 look decent.

These boys went crazy, Kind of cool though to see a list totally freed from expectations. KP and I took most of the big dogs and we also set a precedent that you don't have to choose movie just because "it's supposed to be on the list".

It lets this group go any direction!

It also opens it up for a next next list where everyone can put all the movies that are "supposed to be there" wherever they want!

I submitted a list of 100 movies to KP. I believe 70 of them made the official list. So of the 30 movies that made my list but missed the countdown, I think 2 have been picked here. Blues Brothers (100) and The Untouchables (75)

Couple issues. In one they said there was no defense for the Crane Technique. Exposed as a lie. The bad guy just caught it.

The drum thing that was the new technique was just alternating left and right crosses. That was pretty sad

Fun fact the bad guy from this one owns a Hawaiian restaurant like 5 mins from my house.

They did the same thing in Cobra Kai. Go back to the motherland (Okinawa), and it's like you learn the real karate there.

52. Caddyshack
shuke - #17

Another one of my solo picks where I don't understand what is happening around here.

This is the one I alluded to that maybe there was a mistake, or everyone was gaslighting me.

Here's the kicker. Lambskin had Caddyshack 2 as #58 on his list. :loco:
It's unbelievable to me that Caddyshack didn't make the original list, and it's even more unbelievable to me that you were the only one who picked it for this one.....the Caddyshack 2 pick and not picking the original?? Weird stuff.

53 (tie). Blues Brothers
shuke - #18

Another inexcusable omission from the other lists. What an incredible musical cast.
The script is flabby (it was written by Aykroyd over several coke binges) but that's not the point. The plot/story is incidental to the music, the characters and the most memorable scenes (such as the car chase inside the mall and the band being pelted with bottles at the redneck bar).

Holy smokes...how did this not make any lists for the first 100?

This movie was a cultural phenomenon.
Again -- I can't rate what I haven't seen. I've had 0 interest in watching it.
This is another one to put on when you're high instead of something you've already seen before and know is crappy.

While not ranking it high, at least I chuckled at stuff like Airplane!. Caddyshack I find to be actively unfunny. To me it's the worst of the classic 70s/early 80s comedies.

Here's the thing. Aside from Bill Murray's scenes, I honestly don't think it's that funny. Murray's character and performance are awesome, but he basically exists outside the rest of the movie, which seems mostly like generic hamminess to me. Chevy Chase is particularly wooden in this film and sucks the air out of every scene he's in. The plot is nothing special, the jokes/lines aren't on par with the best comedies of the time and the characters are too broad for me to care about what happens to them. The Blues Brothers is orders of magnitude better despite having an equally flimsy plot, for the reasons I stated in my comments on it.

61 (tie). The Twilight Zone: The Movie
Scoresman - #23

I totally forgot about this, but not sure it would have cracked my top 60. Still loved it.
I just watched this tonight. Hadn't seen it since the 80's. Doesn't hold up. Not a good movie. The prologue with Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks gave me hope but the next three segments aren't great. Supposedly Spielberg's heart wasn't in it after Vic Morrow's and the kids deaths and it shows in his piece. The Lithgow Nightmare at 20,000 Feet segment is fine but the original episode is so iconic it's hard to say this bit is in any way special. 1.75 out of 5 stars.

To each his own......Caddyshack I watch every once in a while. To me it's a great 80's classic.....honestly, Airplane is a take or leave for me

Trivia: the actress that played Ethel in the 3rd sequence (with the weird family and who gets eaten in the TV by the monsters) is Nancy Cartwright - the voice of Bart Simpson.

It's unbelievable that out of 5 rankers, only 1 person ranked Blues Bro's and Caddyshack. Shuke representing the masses!
Many of us were like 8 years old when these movies came out. Not exactly the target demographic.

This is actually an important point. I think we all assume everyone is the same age. But I think when you saw these and where you were in life is pretty important to understanding these rankings?

I mean, GI Joe The Movie? I was way too cool for that in '87.

Ages:
shuke: 50. Age in 80's: 7-17
Lambskin: 43. Age in the 80's: 0-10
@Scoresman ???

47. Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home
Scoresman - #15

I remember this and the fish out of water thing was interesting.

I know there arent a lot of trekkies here, but this needs explaining since this is popularly regarded as the worst star trek film.

This is another movie that I have a personal connection with. It has to do with the clip below.

Some context for those who have not and will not see this movie. In this one, the crew of the starship enterprise have to go back in time to 1980s San Francisco. In order to get back, they need to find nuclear materials.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdSJFrhb-HM

So you see they have to go to Alameda to find the Nuclear Wessels. This is a funny scene in one sense because it's a Russian guy in cold war America asking people where to find nuclear vessels. But it's doubly great for me because I grew up and lived in Alameda at the time. This isn't a large city. It's a suburb of SF/Oakland. And this is by far it's greatest cinematic claim to fame. For myself and all of my friends, this was amazing. We were going around everywhere asking people where to find the nuclear wessels laughing our asses off.

Other than this, I dont think it's necessarily a bad film, oh who am I kidding, it's bad, but I will love it forever.

Ummmmm no. Widely regarded as one the top 2 Star Trek films. You must be thinking of V Which is utterly garbage.

10-19 was my ages between 1980-1989. I feel blessed I was able to grow up in the 80’s.

Now I get it.

One guy who was old enough to remember 80's movies.

Two guys who possibly have thoughts on which color Mighty Morphin Power Ranger is best.
