The Next 100 best movies from the 80's (4 Viewers)

53 (tie). Blues Brothers
shuke - #18

Another inexcusable omission from the other lists. What an incredible musical cast.
Deserves inclusion just for the church scene. I mean, James Brown as the preacher?? Perfection.

Not to mention Aretha in the diner.

Some rankers have some explaining to do.
This is one of my favorites of all-time.

Was this the first of the SNL spinoff movies or did they use the show to market the movie?

I probably saw it on cable 5 years after its release. Too young to see it in the theatres.

53 (tie). One Magic Christmas
Scoresman - #18

I have absolutely no clue what this is. I couldn't even find a decent trailer.
So this one's on the list for two reasons. First, I really identified with this movie at a young age, having had a similar family situation (father passed away young). So I can't make a list without this movie on it.

I also think it's an underrated Christmas movie in it's own right. It has a stellar cast with great acting (Mary Steenburgen and Harry Dean Stanton). It also has my favorite and I feel the best and most realistic portrayal of Santa Claus and his workshop. That said, it is depressing as hell for most of the runtime especially for a Disney movie and a bit heavy on the sap, and I feel you need to be able to connect with the families portrayed in the movie on some level to really appreciate it. So I get that I'm a bit on an island here. I do love my Christmas movies.

Holy smokes...how did this not make any lists for the first 100?

This movie was a cultural phenomenon.
Again -- I can't rate what I haven't seen. I've had 0 interest in watching it.

When lots of people like something that I'm pretty sure I won't like, sometimes I just give it a shot to see what all the fuss is about. Then I feel like I'm still part of the culture, but I can secretly mock them for whatever mass delusion I'm sure they are under.

As for the Blues Brothers. Great movie, iconic lines, and I loved the music too. I was a teen when I first saw it. It was one of my Dad's favorite movies. I should mention that he had pretty low brow taste in movies. One time my mom rented some 5 start movie, like a Room with a View or whatever, and I was present for ths conversation.

Mom says: Hey lets watch "A Room With a View". It got 5 stars.
Dad says: Ugh, I'd rather see a 2 and a half. :ROFLMAO:

Rest in peace, pops.

Orange whip?
Orange whip?
Three orange whips.

Ok ok…..I get it now. Emotional attachments can run deep.

If it was pure 100% emotional attachment I’d feel bad including it. I think it’s incredibly underrated for a virtually unknown Christmas movie.

Ugh yeah this was a tough one for me. I love the music, I love Belushi. My dad loves the Blues Brothers and showed this to me many times. Not sure why it doesn't stand out for me as a movie. The music is undeniable.

Hmmm never heard of it

I posted something snarky before seeing Scoresman's explanation for why he loves the movie. My apologies, was not at all intentional if anyone saw it.

Please don’t apologize. I don’t want people to be shy about critiquing picks and it’s not why I posted my explanation. I knew I would catch flak for it.

52. Caddyshack
shuke - #17

Another one of my solo picks where I don't understand what is happening around here.

This is the one I alluded to that maybe there was a mistake, or everyone was gaslighting me.

Here's the kicker. Lambskin had Caddyshack 2 as #58 on his list. :loco:
This one is somewhere in the 60s on my list. I didn’t see it until I was older and it didn’t have the same effect as if I had seen it earlier. Still great though. I was a kid back then not into golf as you can imagine.

I have no issue with snark, it just wasn't the right snark given your comments. If someone read them in sequence, it would have possibly sounded like I was making some kind of comment about your dad. I didn't even know the movie was about that.

But yeah WTF is this movie?

Next up is a 4-way tie:
- a movie appearing on 2 lists
- someone loves those sequels
- another movie I've never heard of
- another solo shuke pick that was shocking to me

Caddyshack was probably my 101. Judge Smails is an all timer. Chase and Bill are pretty good (but not peak). Rodney is ok. The caddies are a waste of time. It is funny with iconic jokes but as a movie, it's a mess.

Caddyshack makes my top 200 but I never thought it was as funny as everybody else thought it was.

Funny but does require knowledge of a movie that is now older than most people's grandparents. Rodney was old at the time. It was his first movie I think and they said he had no clue what he was doing. They would bring him on set and he would just start going into his "sets" and they kept having to stop him to be like "Hey Rodney, we aren't even filming yet. Give us a minute. You need to stand here, etc"

So what? The guy makes that movie. Everything he does is gold.

Agreed.

There was a special on the making of Caddyshack that talks about how they gutted the plot to increase Bill, Chevy and Rodney's time. Originally it was much more Danny and D'Annunzio, with a totally different ending. The guy who played D'Annunzio lamented that he was basically cut so the gopher could get more screen time.

Iconic because there were some really funny parts, but it's not much of a movie when you really look at it. Still, I thought it might make it in the tail end of the other list because its such a big deal - especially for anyone who plays golf. A little surprised only one person ranked it.

I don't know, thought it was a funny anecdote about Rodney?

Was it Douglas Kenney, founder of National Lampoons, who was the main writer behind the project and had it all get rewritten on him?

Now I will search this one out and give it another watch. I remember seeing it and don’t remember much about it.

My Yeah my wife and I love random Christmas movies when the season greets us, I will for sure check this out. It has Mary Steamed Virgin in it, so that's a win already.

It’s the superior Caddyshack
You owe me a cocktail- I just spit out half my Manhattan after reading that joke.

48 (tie). Creepshow
Lambskin - #17
Scoresman - #60

This was probably in my 80-90 range. Fun flick.

Love this movie

Hard to rank the individual skits, Father’s Day probably my favorite. Love the “oh no meteor ****” quote in the King one

Feel like this was another one that was always on cable and the anthology format you could just hop in

Sequel was OK (I can’t imagine anyone has it listed I had it at 66) but man that Raft scene did a number on me. Growing up in Michigan I went to numerous random lakes that had a similar raft and every time all I could think about was that sick *** blob in the water. Even like 2-3 years ago went on a scout trip with the kids and they had some lake (swamp) with a raft and of course my kids wanted to swim to it

Might have to take you up on that offer this summer.

But at least there's no movies from people who speak Japanese on this list....

I left one out ill post it at the end

Also this movie is probably the 80s Iron Giant (which I still have yet to see). That Indy 500 scene is rough
The foreign thing was more of just a comment at a somewhat imaginary audience of critics to my list with KP. As for animation, ignore me. I don't know much about them, not my thing.
