The next Rich Gannon (1 Viewer)

The signing of David Carr today got me thinking about QBs that have washed out. It hasn't been that uncommon for QBs to mature in their late 20's or in Gannon's case in his 30s. There was really nothing about Gannon that lead anyone to believe he'd become an all-pro, a four time pro bowler, and the NFL MVP. At 32 years old he had never thrown for more than 2300 yards or 16 TDs. His completion percentage was in the high 50s.

There's been some young talent that has gotten thrown into the fire, and not done well.

David Carr

JP Losman

Kyle Boller

Byron Leftwich

Patrick Ramsey

Joey Harrington

Rex Grossman

Those are just the 1st rounders that are still hanging around the league. Most of them aren't even owned in dynasty leagues anymore.

Anybody have a favorite that with some time to develop can pan out to be a fantasy starter?

Of those seven - Losman sticks out like a sore thumb to me. I'd really like to see him get a chance somewhere with something resembling a go-to receiving option that he could lean on. The guys hasn't done himself any favors but he strikes me as someone who could come back to bite the Bills in the a** if they wind up trading him.

Was Gannon a 1st rounder?? (Thought he was a 3rd/4th round pick. Could be wrong)

With that said, a couple guys I like are (Guys that aren't looked at as "the future" but guys I believe can have a few successful starting years ahead)

Sage Rosenhauls

Luke McCown

I just view these 2 as very heady QB's in the mold of Gannon.

Of the list you provided, the only one I can see is Losman. I think he can adapt to a new offense better than the rest JMO. Leftwich I think has the most talent of your group, but I can't see him staying healthy for an entire year.

Not looking for someone from my list. Just interested to see who people still think have a chance.Gannon was the 98th overall pick by the Patriots. A 4th rounder in 1987.

Foolish I know, but I'm still hoping the Bills coaches stop sabotaging him and give him a real chance to take his job back.Just call me a dreamer....

Chris Redman has a great chance if they don't draft Ryan.

While it wouldn't be the same career path I could see Culpepper catching on somewhere and returning to an elite level(provided he has top notch WR talent around him, Detroit would be good.)

I also wouldn't write off Brian Griese now that he is back with Gruden. One injury to Garcia and that job might be Griese's for good,

Kyle Boller

He's a smart kid, has the arm strength, and can take the punishment. That Ravens offense has been a blackhole the past few years...that wasn't all his fault. I could see Boller being a great starter if he's given a chance with the right offense down the line.

Todd Collins

He looked pretty good last year for the first time in his career. Who says he doesn't fights off Campbell and continue to suprise us all.

This is Campbell's make-or-break year in the league in my opinion. They will give him every opportunity to show if he is the long-term QB in Washington so they know whether they need to bring in someone else next season. Sometimes you have to take a hit one year in order to figure things out for the future, and I am hoping Zorn recognizes that.

This very opinion, which is fairly common around the NFL, not specifically of Campbell but rather of QBs around the time of their 4th or 5th season in the league, is the primary reason players like Rich Gannon are such rare, rare finds. The man gets drafted in '87 and in '99, his 12th season in the league, he makes his 1st Pro Bowl. Can we actually imagine a guy floundering around for 10 or 11 years before some owner like Al Davis brings him in as a FA to be a starting QB at that age?? Its just not really happening anymore. Gannon wasnt like someone like Culpepper or Mike Vick or Harrington or Leftwich. The guy never enjoyed the comforts of a highly drafted 1st rounder. He was never pampered. He had the chip on the shoulder mentality. Very much like Kurt Warner, Jeff Garcia or Brad Johnson. And of course Tom Brady. That's the real quality we probably need to look for in searching for future Rich Gannons or Kurt Warners. That hunger. That attitude. That fearlessness. That poor kid from the other side of the tracks mentality. And then athletically or skill wise, something a bit unique. With Gannon, it was his tremendous athleticism and very precise short-mid passing game. With Warner, it was just pinpoint accuracy and guts. I just dont see a guy out there right now with the makeup. But that's as expected. Noone ever really sees players like Rich Gannon coming. My best guess for a similar player would be an incredible long shot, and it would take a near miracle and it would be Michael Vick. The man's hitting the low point any person can possibly reach, not in a career, but in a life. Talk about coming back with something to prove. he's being stripped of much of his wealth, and all of that pampering he's experienced in the past will be gone if/when he returns. The man's just gonna be starving for a 2nd chance. He'll be lucky to get one. But athletically, he's never been matched at the position. His passing accuracy has just never been there, but then, Id attribute part of that to so much of what is wrong about these QBs getting drafted so high and being expected to immediately carry the franchise. The guy never really was given the time to just learn how to play the position. He was just thrown out there and told to go make plays. If he actually works harder than other guys. I mean REALLY works. And studies. And genuinely listens to coaches who will be willing to coach him as just another guy, then I think he has a chance to be special again. Just a guess.

Joe Flacco --- just for the Delaware Blue Hen link.

Boller and Carr still have time to get their game together, maybe Losman as well.

My grandfather was a huge UD fan and continually said that when Gannon was drafted (I believe as a WR or DB) that teams in need of a QB made a mistake and that he would be an excellent NFL QB. It's a shame he died in 1997 and didn't get to see his prediction ring true.

Most of the older quarterbacks who emerged were good in their first real opportunity to start, even if that opportunity came after age 28 (Trent Green, Warren Moon, Kurt Warner, Jeff Garcia, Brad Johnson, Jeff Hostetler). There were other guys who were injury-prone early, but were relatively productive (for young players) when they played, and didn't have their best years til the 30's (Chandler, Beuerlein). I'm not sure that we will ever see another Gannon (guy who started a few seasons and played ok but not great, then was actually out of the league, only to emerge as an elite quarterback after age 33).I think Chris Simms is a possibility to follow Chandler and Beuerlein. His only full season as a starter, he played competently. The question there is whether he will be healthy enough to play again.

Gannon hit the perfect storm for his talents: Great system, great receivers, great RB out of the backfield and pretty good line.

I would look for a guy that is smart, has good accuracy, but has played behind a poor line and had little help at RB or WR.

Losman could be a serviceable QB, but he has no qualities in him that are Gannon-esque. He doesn't seem like he is that smart. His short accuracy is horrible. It was commented on during several Buffalo games by announcers, teams leave the RB and underneath open because he has a hard time with shorter passes. Makes it hard to pull off screens and teams can go balls to the wall against you with the pass rush. He also tends to get jumpy in the pocket...watch his feet, he will bounce around a lot.

To even make it to "serviceable" he needs a team with a good line, a good RB and a good deep threat.

I never thought Patrick Ramsey ever got a fair shake to be a starter. I can see him blossoming some day
That 6.5 ypa was great, so was 35-30 TD/INT ratio. He got plenty of opportunities to showcase his talent, problem was, he wasn't talented.

Not sure of a Gannon-eske improvement but I like Sage Rosenfels for a vet who is he ever gets a shot could be solid. For younger guys Shuan Hill has already been mentioned and I like his potential and he may get his shot . Other younger guys. Trent Edwards looks impressive as does Quinn. I wouldn't be shocked to see any of the above QBs develop into solid starters or even top performers/producers.

One name that intrigues me even though I don't predict big success is Troy Smith. The Raven offense seemed to get a real spark when he came into games and I would like to see more of him. He is fun to watch.
