Hinske trade struck

Blue Jays unload lefthanded bat

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff | August 17, 2006

Not one to complain, David Ortiz yesterday afternoon put words to a sentiment widely held in the Red Sox clubhouse.

``We need help," he said. ``It's getting late."

Perhaps Ortiz already had an inkling of what was coming, because last night the Sox struck a waiver deal with the Toronto Blue Jays for Eric Hinske, who fits the profile of the type of player Boston was seeking: a lefthanded hitter who can play both corner infield positions as well as the outfield. The move comes right before this weekend's five-game series against the Yankees, a team against which he has fared well this season, batting .368 (7 for 19) with two home runs and five RBIs.

The deal, because it involves an outlay of more than $1 million, still requires approval from Major League Baseball. The Sox are expected to send a low-to-mid-level prospect to the Blue Jays.

Hinske, the American League's Rookie of the Year in 2002, when he hit 24 home runs and knocked in 84 runs while batting .279, signed a five-year deal worth $14.75 million the following year but had devolved into a platoon player.

The Blue Jays, looking to get out from under his contract, agreed to pay $2.8125 million, half of the salary due him next year. The Sox apparently agreed to pay the roughly $1.4 million still owed Hinske for this season.

Hinske is expected to start a couple of times a week, in place of Kevin Youkilis or Mike Lowell, and also becomes the team's primary lefthanded pinch hitter off the bench.

Hinske was pulled from the Blue Jays' starting lineup last night minutes before their game in St. Petersburg, Fla., but told Toronto reporters after the game he was just awaiting word on his fate.

Hinske, 29, began the season as part of a right-field platoon with Alex Rios and hit .323 (10 for 31) in April, though none of his hits went for extra bases. With Rios emerging as a star, Hinske gradually lost playing time. He has appeared in just nine games this month, going 4 for 24 (.167). Overall, he brings a .264 average with 12 home runs and 29 RBIs.

His appeal to the Sox comes in his at-bats against righthanded pitchers. He has a .376 on-base percentage and .575 slugging percentage against righthanders, which suggests there will be games when Sox manager Terry Francona uses him to hit late for shortstop Alex Gonzalez.

The Sox had no official comment on the deal, but there was rampant speculation among players that Hinske was headed here. The team has had a lopsided roster of late, employing 13 pitchers, leaving Francona with just three players on his bench -- a backup catcher, backup infielder Alex Cora, and backup outfielder Gabe Kapler.

Former NU star Peña is added to the mix

First baseman left Yankees' system

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff | August 17, 2006

The Red Sox, who have been casting about for a lefthanded hitter for some time, last night came to terms on a deal with Carlos Peña, the Haverhill native and former Northeastern star who has spent the summer in the minor leagues.

Peña, who is expected to report today to Triple A Pawtucket, was released by Detroit in March and signed with the Yankees April 15. Peña was leading the Columbus Clippers, the Yankees' Triple A affiliate, in home runs (19) and RBIs (66) while batting .260. But yesterday, Pena exercised a clause in his contract that allowed him to ask for his release to pursue a major league deal.

The club last night would not confirm the deal.

Peña, a first-round choice by the Texas Rangers out of Northeastern in 1998, is joining his fifth organization, having also played for the Athletics and Tigers before signing with the Yankees for $1.25 million, with an additional $500,000 in incentives.

The Sox passed on Peña this spring, electing to sign Hee-Seop Choi, who has been a bust in Pawtucket, hitting just .207 in 66 games while spending a large chunk of the season on the disabled list. Choi was placed back on the DL with a strained back yesterday by the PawSox.

As recently as 2004, Peña hit 27 home runs and drove in 82 runs for the Tigers and appeared on the verge of fulfilling his considerable promise. But last season, he took another step backward, batting just .235 with 18 home runs and 44 RBIs, striking out 95 times in 260 at-bats, and was sent down to Toledo.

A cautious Felipe Peña, Carlos's father, was reluctant to speak about the deal until it became official. ``I don't know any details of the deal," he said. ``We're really, truly very happy that he's going to be heading back to Boston."

Yeah, I really didn't get using our two most reliable relievers in a blowout game for so long. Myers hasn't pitched much lately, but 31 pitches is too much. Especially with fat boy pitching the 2nd game tomorrow. Yanks really MUST win game 1 and get length from Wang or else you can pencil in 3-2 Boston for the series (if not 4-1).

Just back from the debacle at Fenway this afternoon.I'm beyond angry.I'm filled with sadness for this franchise.I'm sad that the Boston red Sox have fallen into the hands of thesecharlatans, the Henry Group, Incorporated.I'm sad for Manny Ramirez, Dave Ortiz, and Curt Schilling, whose greatefforts are going wasted because the incompetence/dishonesty ofownership/management has left them, despite a payroll of $125,000,000.00,without suffient support staff to back up their efforts. These were the "geniuses" who led us to believe trading Nomar was somehowthe reason why we won the 2004 WS. (Boy we could use his bat in the #5 holeabout right now, backing up Manny.)These were the "geniuses" who let Pedro Martinez walk. The Sandy Kaufax ofour time. These geniuses left us exposed in these series against the Yankeesand the other elite teams in the AL. We need Pedro in these wars. Everyonesays the 2004 ALCS turned around in Game 4 when Dave Roberts stole second. It was a great moment. But I say the 2004 ALCS turned around when Pedro putMatsui on his fanny. We don't have that Pedro Martinez nastiness anymore, sobadly needed when you are battling the Yanks.Lucchino and these other arrogant s.o.b.'s couldn't split the differencewith Johnny Damon, and now he is terrorizing us, almost singlehandedlyending our season this weekend. Doing to us what he used to do against theYanks in our uniform. While Coco swings at the air and sits on the bench.Johnny Damon comes back to play for the Sox after severe concussions and amyriad of other injuries. He runs through walls. Coco sits out in one of thekey games of the season. Oh, these must be sweet days for JD and Yanks fans, after the billion-dollar owners of the Sox refused to split the differencewith the guy who played hard every night for the Sox, who gave us thebiggest sports thrill of our lives with his grandslam in Game 7 in NY. Very, very sad. These are the "geniuses" who signed josh Beckett to three MORE years at $10million a year... but couldnt give the Sandy Kaufax of our time his due. Ijust sat on the first base side and watched a $10-million-per-year MajorLeague pitcher throw 9 walks in the biggest game of the year-- in 5+innings! I'm pretty sure I never saw that in six years of Little Leagueball! Genius. These are the "geniuses" who broke up our beloved 2004 team put together byDan Duquette, who arrogantly tell players to take a hike because they, the"geniuses," know it all. These are the "geniuses" who discarded their top pitchers in 2005, thenwatched Clement, wells and wakefield lead the team to three and out in thefirst round. And the team with the second highest payroll in both leagues will not makethe playoffs this year. These are the "geniuses" who milk Fenway Park for every penny, skyrocketingticket prices every year, marketing concerts, building hotels, reaping inunprecedented profits-- yet, not keeping its top players....The "true fans" here have defended Theo Epstein as some "boy wonder" who isthe greatest thing to ever happen to Beantown. The "true fans" defend john Henry, Larry Lucchino, and Tom Werner as thebest thing to happen to the franchise in its hundred year history. And any of us who have challenged these scoundrels are not true fans, or"trolls."We were right. The "true fans" were wrong. I honestly wish it were the otherway around. But now we are seeing the incompetence of the front office, inall its transparency. It is is frightening to see the level of incompetence and arrogance of thisownership group. These are the guys that traded, then smeared Nomar. Theytried to trade Manny, and smeared him anyway. These out-of-town carpet-bagging arbitrageurs have Jeremy-Jacobized theBoston red Sox franchise. The kings have no clothes. The situation is very, very ugly. And it is very, very sad...."

Probably because they were in first in June.Bottom line is: The Red Sox had every opportunity to put the Yanks away in May and June when Matsui and Sheffield were injured. They couldn't shake them and made no moves to pull away. If you're a Sox fan, you better hope Theo and Gang are right about their young arms because they did everything in their power to protect them. Lester, Delcarmen, and Hansen were abused this weekend and Papelbon was about 3 feet from suffering the same fate with a Giambi blast to the track.

"But I say the 2004 ALCS turned around when Pedro put Matsui on his fanny."

I have said this since that day and agree 110%.... From then on the Yankees were timid at the plate as a hole and Matsui was done.

And as a Yankee fan what pisses me off more than anything is the fact that the Yankees rarely pitch inside or knock player down while the Yankee players get thrown at all the time from chumps looking to take a shot.

As a Yankee fan, i think that Sox fan is a Complete Buffoon...... Except for the turning point of the 04 playoffs - I agree it was knocking down Matsui and pitching inside.

But, Injuries happen - One thing about the Yankees teams that won it all, for the most part they stayed Healthy and didn't even need late season salary deals.... Health to your core players is vital, especially the pitchers.

I think the Sox made good moves and only need to stay healthy and add some pitching, if not for this year then next.

Hey icon I seem to see you ignoring my question if you still want those tickets? :lmao: I seem to recall you laughing at my assertion that the season would be over by Sept 16. Sorry I was a month off :lmao:

:goodposting: Very true , the Sox had their chance and didnt capitalize on itits funny how all is forgotten with Giambino in NY over the hgh/roids once he stated producing again
Giambi gets some deserved quarter because unless these high profile abusers, Bonds, Raffy, Big Mac, Sosa, Sheff, Landis, most of the NFL, he's actually shown both remorse and some willingness to admit culpability. He didn't specifically reference steriods, but he's the only guy active or recently active to not make an about face and face some music. Of course, if he wasn't hitting now, he'd face more heat, but performance does indeed go a long way in matters such as these.

If you believe that, then you cannot think that Ortiz is worthy of the AL MVP...

I miss Wilked's nonsense in all the other baseball threads. Almost makes me sad that the Sux suck.

No seriously this is hilarious. :banned:
