The OFFICIAL 2007 Tampa Bay Buccaneers thread (1 Viewer)

Looks like Zac Taylor is going to Tampa as an undrafted FA. He'll be a good player to have around on the practice squad while the QB situation shakes out. He'll already be way ahead on knowing the offense since he's been running something very similar at Nebraska for 2 years.
They also picked up TE Matt Herian from Nebraska. He was probably going to end up a 2nd round pick before he destroyed his leg last year. If he can fully recover, he's been playing in what is basically Tampa Bay's system for the last 3 years.

The Bucs just acquired DT Ryan Sims KC today for a future draft pick. I wonder if he'll pan out.

It's great to see that the D overall is finally getting a boost.

 Don't know if Sims will turn it around or not...but I'm liking the way the lines are shaping up:OL - Petigout, Sears, Buenning/Lehr/Wade, Joseph, TruebloodDL - Rice, Hovan/Sims, Carter/Wyms, Spires/AdamsOL averaging around 6'4", 325...

Some Sabby blurbs...

"Second-round pick Sabby Piscitelli made an impression on his coaches during Friday's rookie camp workouts.

And for those out there who have often inquired what will happen at safety entering the regular season, coach Jon Gruden pretty much put it to rest today when he said this:

Piscitelli "is a guy who is going to certainly make it interesting at safety with (Jermaine) Phillips and Will Allen," Gruden said. That tells us that Piscitelli will be right in the mix of things and has a chance to start on opening day. Of course, he has to earn it, but if he is everything the Bucs proclaim him to be, this is more than just talk.

Time will tell, but it looks like Allen and Phillips better get it together."

NO COMPARISON BETWEEN PISCITELLI AND LYNCH

For 11 seasons, former Tampa Bay safety John Lynch patrolled the defense’s secondary and earned a reputation for being a headhunter near the line of scrimmage.

A six-time Pro Bowler, Lynch has played for the Denver Broncos since the 2004 season. He signed with Denver after being released by Tampa Bay.

The Bucs had high hopes for Lynch’s successor, Jermaine Phillips, but they’re still looking for a player that can fill Lynch’s shoes.

Tampa Bay might have found that player when it invested a second-round draft pick in Oregon State strong safety Sabby Piscitelli, who is already being compared to Lynch.

However, Bucs head coach Jon Gruden doesn’t see many similarities between Lynch and Piscitelli, who still has a long way to go before he proves himself at the NFL level.

“Well, they’re both white,” Gruden said jokingly when asked about the similarities between Lynch and Piscitelli. “Those are the comparisons I see being made. If your name was something else I guess you’d be compared to somebody else. John Lynch was his own football player. To compare the guy to John Lynch isn’t fair to Sabby, I don’t think. He’s got to play the position he’s capable of playing it. They’re different kinds of guys. There aren’t a lot of similarities the way I see it.”

While he’s not Lynch, Piscitelli possesses attributes that the Bucs feel will help him have a successful career and make a name for himself in Tampa Bay’s defense.

“He’s a big safety and a charismatic guy,” said Gruden. “He’s a great communicator. He’s a confident player. He’s got good ball skills and he’s light on his feet for a big guy. He loves to compete and play – I can see that in his eyes.”

In a recent email update this was written about the Bucs

TB - Buccaneers Release First Depth ChartSource: St. Petersburg TimesThe Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released their first depth chart of the season. Luke McCown is the No. 2 QB behind starter Jeff Garcia. More surprising is that Chris Simms is listed third, ahead of Bruce Gradkowski. First-round pick Gaines Adams is a backup at right defensive end behind free agent Patrick Chukurwah. Maurice Stovall is listed as the No. 2 receiver, ahead of former first-round pick Michael Clayton. Joey Galloway is the other starter. Alex Smith is listed as the starting tight end for the first time in his three-year pro career, ahead of Anthony Becht and Jerramy Stevens. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]This makes sense to me. Simms is easily the 3rd best QB and will be #2 soon I think. And Michael Clayton still seems lost. I'm liking what I'm seeing of Stovall as the #2 WR.
As to the bolded part, it sounds to me as if Simms is either going to be cut or put on IR or the PUP list. I don't think he is going to be the #2 this year. He is having to many problems coming back from the spleen surgery from last year. Also, Michael Clayton is fighting to make the squad IMO. He hasn't been looking too good from what I have heard.

wow...this team really sucks.
I'm not high on them to win many games but I do like Garcia. He had a good completion % last week and 200 yds. Nothing to write home about but it would not surprise me for him to top 250yds and a TD or 2 at home vs N.O.

How about Greg White today also? Looked great.

Anybody notice the statues they have up from the Super Bowl team? They put them inside the practice facility. It would be fitting that the one time the team actually honors its past, it's where nobody can see it.

I haven't heard anything about the statues?

Now that I've had a day to digest...here are some thoughts I have on the '07 Bucs:

- Obviously Garcia is a great fit. But he needs to get some chemistry with someone other than Joey. Teams are going to start taking that away. Just like Simms. It's time for Clayton to step back up.

- Running game is not good. Galloway's big plays are helping and should continue to help open it up...but when we are going to run and the defense knows it, we can't do anything.

- On the flip side, the OL's pass protection has been solid. Garcia had a lot of time to step up and find the open guy

- Defense needs to get more pressure on the QB...starting with Adams. He is non-existant so far. Wishing now we would have taken a chance on Okoye.

- Ruud leading the NFL in tackles!

- Other young guys in Haye, White, Jackson, and June stepping up on defense.

We need to run the ball better...bottom line. And I'm worried about stopping a physical back...like SJ next week.

Nice improvement from Week 1 to Week 2...but still plenty of issues.

Good post gump. I'm also more than a little concerned about the corners. Brian Kelly and Phillip Buchanon both injured? We need at least one of them back soon.

They showed some pictures of the statues during the tv broadcast yesterday. They were just installed in the new training facility. I can't seem to find any pics with a cursory search just now. Gruden, Alstott, Sapp, Lynch, Brooks, and maybe Ronde? Life-sized bronze statues in an alcove off the weight room, I think.

Good game today. Few of my thoughts, gump-style

-Don't know how they're getting by on defense with no pass rush. The linebackers and secondary are playing terrific. D-line is the weakest unit on the team.

-Barrett Ruud probably shouldn't have been on the bench the past two years.

-They just basically ran the ball up Hovan's face all afternoon. He and Haye might be the worst pair of dtackles in the game right now. The Rams completely pushed them around, GB Linehan being dumb enough to give up on the run in the red-zone.

-Phillips has finally arrived. What a game. Buchanon too, not just the pick -- he is completely rejuvenated out there.

-Offense is still meh, imo. Anything happens to Garcia or Galloway and they won't be able to move the ball.

-Clayton is terrible out there, other than his blocking skills. What a ridiculous drop.

-Graham looked great. It would be nice if they could establish another back. Good for him though, with all the work he's done.

-Again, they're going to have to find a pass rush if they're going to keep this up, but I'm very happy with 2-1. Lot of problems, but two dominating wins. I'll take it!

:pickle:

Agree on all counts, Capella.

It's amazing how bad the DL is and how well the secondary and LBs are playing...too bad we didn't draft Okoye. But that secondary threesome of Barber, Kelly, and Buchanon? Sick....

Cut Clayton...he's worthless and has completely lost his confidence.

Big NFCS game this week!!

Have you heard this stat yet:

Every Division Champ from the NFC South finished LAST the year prior. Hmmm....

Clayton got a hell of a crack block on Little last night -- he's at least earning his keep in blocking, but it's amazing how bad of a receiver he has become.I do wish they took Okoye (well, actually AP), but Gaines is at least getting his hands up a little bit now. Panthers likely will not have Delhomme this week, which is a huge break for the Bucs. It's basically a two-team race between them and the Cats.

:goodposting:
I cringe every time those two take a hit. Especially the way Garcia throws himself around out there. On the other hand, I think this year's offense under McCown would be better than last year's offense. (Yes, I know, that isn't saying much.)I'm also surprised that Bucs opponents aren't sticking with the run more. I can't see Carolina making the same mistake this week. Although if Delhomme isn't playing, that's a big help.

Return game is finally looking dangerous again with M.Jones back there.

How many penalties have the Bucs taken in the last two weeks? Seattle game was terrible, especially on special teams, but I can't think of many penalties the last couple of weeks. (Oh wait, forgot about the personal fouls yesterday by Brooks and Barber. Nevermind.)

:goodposting: :banned: :hey:

Before the season started, I was hoping for 2-3 after what looked like a brutal 5 game start. Now, I honestly think we can play Indy tough next week and have a shot at 4-1.

OLine looking better and better...the right side (Trueblood and Joseph) is going to be great.

Defense looks so fast.

Hopefully CW and LP aren't seriously hurt.

CADDY DONE...September 30, 2007Williams, Petitgout lost for the seasonThe Bucs have lost running back Cadillac Williams and left tackle Luke Petitgout for the season.Williams is believed to have suffered a torn patellar tendon in his right knee when he was hit by Panthers safety Chris Harris following an 18-yard run in the first quarter. He returned to Tampa with the team Sunday night and will fly to Birmingham early this week to undergo surgery from renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews.Petitgout is believed to have suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee one series later. He will undergo further examination today in Tampa."I just put my arms around him,'' running back Michael Pittman said of Williams. "I couldn't tell him it would be all right. Obviously he's disappointed his season is over.''
Boy that really puts a dim on things. Losing Luke is killer.

Yea, but now we have to worry about some guy chasing down Garcia's backside all year.

:sadbanana:

Looks like the Bucs may be catching a break this week with Harrison out, and maybe a few other Colts starters. I think they're kind of free-rolling this week, as I think everybody had this pegged as a loss. But 3-2 coming back home after two tough road games is fantastic. 4-1 of course...

bucs homers have any opinion on the rook Greg Peterson DT? His stats are looking up the past 2 weeks.
Monte supposedly loves him, and I believe may even be starting him. Although there is so much rotation right now on the DL, a starting designation doesn't mean much.If the LB's and DB's continue to stay healthy and play like they are, I would think there would be nothing but upside for the DL and Peterson.

Well, that was certainly emphatic. They didn't deserve to be on the field with Colts -- just imagine if Harrison and Addai played. Still, not many teams in the league would go into Indy and stay with them

Fortunately the schedule opens up from here.

-Graham is not good enough to be the sole RB if Pittman is out an extended period of time.

-That defensive pass rush is almost laughable at this point. Causes too much stress on the back 7, they HAVE to find a way to get to the QB.

-Defense couldn't get off the field, the corners were torched all day.

-Game was over as soon as Galloway dropped that slant. GD him.

-Guess Penn looked ok, but the offense wasn't on the field long enough to tell.

Sucky game, and Tennessee next week is going to be a real test as well. *sigh*

Bet you guys looked better in the loss than we did in the win.

That TENN DEF is big and fast. WOW!! I watched that whole game and was impressed!! BUCS are gonna need some wiggle from whichever RB plays on sunday if they think they can get thru that D Line!!

4-2 is nice and that was a great win today, but I'm still fuming that they took Gaines fn Adams over Adrian Peterson.

:jawdrop: He would have destroyed our division worse than he has his own!!SIGHHHHHHHH!!!Earnesto looked like he played hard yesterday...TENN was tough on the D line!! Lets see how he runs on the Lions!!He is no AP though without question and I am the master of understatement!!

I didn't want Peterson at all. Two top 5 picks on RBs within 3 years is not a recipe for success...unless of course the first can't stay healthy and the second is the next Payton.

I'm still peeved we didn't take Okoye.

Smith's injury will hurt.

4 wins and counting though...this team has a lot of heart!

Really, I'm just mad that they took Gaines. Guy seems like a tremendous bust in the making, and yes, I know he needs time. But it doesn't even seem like he's capable right now.

Apparently the asking price for Moore is a 4th now. I think at this point you have to do that...with Garcia, this defense and the ridiculously weak NFC, there's a legit chance this team can get deep into the playoffs. Hard to risk all of that with Earnest Graham and Lionel Gates manning the position.

He's proven himself to be a legit enough player in the past. I hope they go out and get him.

Well, Bennett it is. :deadhorse:

Some other thoughts:

-I don't think the running game is THAT bad. The Titans have a ridiculous run D and they were way behind all game against the Colts. I think Graham will have some decent games ahead.

-Penn has really looked much better than we had any right to expect at this point.

-STILL no pass rush. Holy crap. I'm afraid that Kitna may have all day to pick them apart this weekend. Cool seeing them go back to Detroit though for an old NFC Norris matchup (how I wish they were still in that division).

-It's a testament to how unbelievable the back 7 is playing that they can stand up to these offenses (sans the Colts) with no help from the front four. Also, what a find Philip Buchanan turned out to be.

-Wow, Tanard Jackson was one of the steals of the draft. He should be getting hype for defensive rookie of the year. Along with the savvy selection of Sears, it kind of makes up for whiffing on Gaines, if he does end up being a bust.

-Jeff Garcia is God. Jesus, I was so wrong on him, and I couldn't be happier about it.

Unbelievably horrible loss today. Sickening. I'm not even sure I can rationally talk about this for a few days.

Simply unbelievable.

Report just now on local radio from Allen's press conference today:

- Gruden will get an extension soon

- Kiffen will also get an extension soon

- Muir will be staying

- RB Art Valero was let go

I've heard rumors from some Nebraska people that Bill Callahan might be headed down to Tampa to reunite with Gruden as OL coach or as the OC.

I think it would be a good pick-up. BC strikes me as a guy who is very good coordinator that just isn't cut out for the lead role.

He's just a yes man for Gruden.

Well...TB could certainly use a spark on the offensive side. Although I don't think Muir is leaving. Is OC the position Callahan held in Oakland under Gruden?
